Long since most beat prospectors traded in their record jones' for a KORG and a copy of Timbaland's greatest hits, L.A. based People Under The Stairs are still hewing away at the vinyl rock face, searching for rich sample seams. Thes One and Double K's naturalistic approach is at odds with rap's current electro funk obsession: "I hate Hip-Hop that sounds like it was made in a laboratory," winces Thes.
Part of PUTS' refreshing charm is hearing the distillation of their lives into the music, whether it be Thes One's hobby of sport fishing or Double K's predilection for having sex, smoking weed and listening to P-Funk (preferably at the same time). "Our music is the soundtrack of two lives in LA - all our experiences, musical and cultural influences, we take it all in and reflect it in our music."
Musically their new album, 'O.S.T. (Original Sound Track)', is an earthy slab of smoky grooves and meticulously crafted breaks: "We create our sound with mad bits and pieces," explains Thes. "We'll take a loop apart and rebuild it."
"We're like Dilated Peoples on acid," adds Double K with a grin.
"We just want to be remembered as a good time hip-hop group," explains Thes. "We're not interested in being the new revolutionary hip hop group of the millennium, we just wanna be the group that everybody's gonna remember; 'Oh yeah People Under The Stairs, they came with the fresh shit!'"
