Choice of Russia and Qatar as hosts raises questions of FIFA integrity
by Grant WahlZURICH -- Three thoughts after FIFA awarded World Cup 2022 to Qatar (with the U.S. losing out) and World Cup 2018 to Russia on Thursday:
1. Choosing Qatar and Russia is the biggest indictment possible that FIFA is not a clean organization. The message here is that petrodollars talk. For an outfit that likes to thump its chest and claim that it is not corrupt (Trust us, says FIFA president Sepp Blatter), having two oil-wealthy winners is the clearest message possible that FIFA needs a complete overhaul in its leadership and organization. Russia had a pretty good case for being chosen, but Qatar (which was funded heavily by its government and bought the support of celebrity endorsers) didn't make a lot of sense in the first place. Get ready for searing summer heat in the Middle East!
2. Qatar? Really? It would have been one thing if the U.S. had lost out to Australia, a country that has put on big-time sporting events with panache and has never hosted a World Cup. But Qatar is a huge risk for FIFA and suggests that it's possible to buy the World Cup. FIFA's own inspection team visited Qatar and was concerned that the 110-degree summer heat would put the health of players and fans at risk, even if Qatar says it will build air-conditioned stadiums and training grounds. What's more, 12 years is a long time away, and you never know what might happen in world politics between now and then. Choosing a safer bet like the U.S. or Australia would have been the logical thing to do, but as we know, FIFA doesn't always use logic in its decisions. If anything, the outcry over these choices will be the biggest incentive for FIFA to finally clean up its act.
3. The U.S. lost out, but its hard to imagine the Americans could have done more.Yes, the U.S. bid presentation on Wednesday wasn't perfect -- Bill Clinton and Morgan Freeman didn't live up to their potential, surprisingly -- but the U.S. bid committee crisscrossed the world to lobby voters for the past 18 months, and it had the best economic case of any of the 22 bidders for winning the bid. Is it possible to win the World Cup bid while playing by the rules? That question is louder than ever at this point. This is a big blow for U.S. soccer and Major League Soccer, but let's keep things in perspective too. This won't get as much mainstream attention in the U.S. as Chicago's failed Olympic bid. It won't doom MLS, which is here to stay. But like the U.S.' loss to Ghana in this year's World Cup, it is a huge missed opportunity
does Qatar even play football?? and won't everyone melt!
Yesterday evening I thought I might have been slightly (lol) overreacting at OPEC's eerrr I mean FIFAs decision but I still dont believe it was right. England only recieved 2 votes for their bid?!
Seriously?! We have the best league in the world, the most watched league, great stadia already in place and used week in week out without any problems. We have great fans, we attract the best players in the world to play in our leagues.
We showed in 96 that we can put on a damn good show!
GAZZA!!!

Qatar average position from FIFA World Ranking creation is 77.
So 32 teams compete for the World Cup, with the hosts and the previous winners automatically qualifying.
Now a team that has hasn't been in the top 32 and barely been in the top 64 (32 x 2 ) in the last 17 years is going to get automatic entry at the expense of a team that actually has a footballing history.
A team like Republic of Ireland (f***ed by FIFA this year!!!) could miss out again.
Now I'm all for everyone having a chance, but that is just silly. Can anyone name a player OR team from Qatar?!!
No offence but I dont think it would be right for the USA to host the World Cup so soon after having it in 94.
But I do believe they should have it again some time because soccer is really growing over there.
And I think they will do a better job than last time.
I would love to see the Ozzies put on a World Cup, the time difference would suck but I think they could put on a good show and they have great fans.
Russia didnt even qualify for the last World Cup...I smell oil and mafia connections
It is well known that a lot of Russian fans are racist and some teams have never had a black player play for them for that reason!! Do we want that in football, NO!!!
Kick Racism and FIFA out of Football.
I'm gonna be an old man by the time England gets another chance to host the World Cup. sh!t!
Yeah I was gonna be old (33) if we got it in 2018! lol.
Too much old guard in FIFA.

Agree. FIFA needs to be torn down and replaced by something new.
Fo' real or a new rival organisation.
Not that anyone cares but chin up. Still got the olympics and rugby world cup.
Im not a fan of football, but comeon quatar? and russia? somethings up! i smell a CONSPIRACY!!!! lol
Nasri with the touch of an angel! Two amazing goals from him sealed the win.
18 Goals from 6 games. Only team ever to have scored 3 in 5 CL games in a row..
and first team ever to score at least 2 in all of their 6 group games..
First year in the CL and were breaking records everywhere...
Spurs finish top of the group and go into the last 16. Never in my wildest dreams did I think we'd do this good.
COYS!
Man U moves into first with a 1-0 win over Arsenal today. It sounded like the Man U fans have forgiven Rooney. Mr. Rooney badly missed a penalty that would have put the game away. That chav has had a bad year (poor world cup, cheating on wife with hooker, injuries, transfer rumors, male pattern baldness) Im very pleased the game was on espn 2, football gets no love here in the states, and is rarely televised.
Across town, Tevez said he wants out of Man city and out of england. I dont understand why players like Tevez or Rooney would say they want out when their teams are in the middle of superb seasons. You never see baseball players demanding a trade when their teams are in the playoff hunt.
Anyway, now that I've outed myself as a premier league fan, it must be said: COYS!

F*** QATAR...... sorry england
Good result for Man U, keeps everything still nice and open. Next big game for them is against Chelsea on Sunday. Then it's Arsenal vs Chelsea on the 27th.
Arsenal can't seem to conquer the big boys. Wenger's wee bits are faltering to the grown up men who stock Chelsea, Man UTD and Tottenham lol.

Still I wouldn't mind Nasri or Ashavin in my team... you just need to sort out your goalie and maybe buy a good defensive midfielder to protect the back four.
