So after the excitement of the transfer window we have one of the best weekends of Premier League Football EVER?!!
Things are getting more interesting as the season goes on.
And what a weekend 41 goals on Saturday...

First things first, good to see you back. Hopefully you'll be able to post more.

Where to begin about the Arsenal debacle? Is Diaby supposed to just lay down and take/be subjected to such harsh tackles? Is it truly gentlemanly to take the punishment? In the replay you see his leg bending and thankfully not breaking. In this instance, I think Diaby's reaction is just after Nolan came flying into him. Both players should have seen red cards for their parts in the fracas.

Phil Dowd's "performance" was one for the ages. Can a referee ever be so biased against a team? I swear he called every ticky tack foul against Arsenal in the second half setting up set pieces for Newcastle and allowed for Newcastle's players to bully Arsenal the rest of the way. The first penalty I can see being called but the second one was laughable. Where was Nolan's card (yellow) for healdlocking our keeper after the penalty? How does Szczesny get carded for being headlocked? truly amazing work by Dowd.

Djourou's injury played a significant part as well. Arsenal's defense was already suspect and losing him opened the floodgates for Newcastle.

But for me, Arsene Wenger gets the biggest chunk of blame. Up 4 goals, why doesn't he hunker down? After Diaby goes off why doesn't he make the tactical changes needed to preserve the lead? Why does he take off Walcott when he gave fits to Newcastle's defense? Why does Rosicky come on at all? His stubbornness not to buy quality defensive players in the January Transfer window was on full display for this match. It's like he just doesn't see what's wrong with the team or that there simply wasn't a quality French player available to sign.

What's funny is I almost decided to stop watching after halftime thinking the game was over. Maybe I should have as I think I jinxed the team by being selfish lol.

I am happy Man UTD finally lost, upset Arsenal couldn't take advantage. Despite the collapse, we still gained ground on the leaders. About the only positive I can take from the day.

As for your Top Scorers comment, doesn't Arsenal have the second highest goals scored (one behind Man UTD) and goal differential? It's a team game and Arsenal distribute the wealth nicely.

I'm really only in tune with Arsenal and get my League news from the EPL Talk podcast as well as The Guardian's Football Weekly podcast. I will need a couple seasons to get a handle on what other teams do. Also, I need to order Fox Soccer Channel to watch more games as I only catch the early Saturday games on ESPN2, stream Arsenal games online and download Match of the Day a day or two after. You're so lucky to be living there and catching all the action live lol. I'd trade my sports fandom here to be able to experience the EPL in England.

Let's hope it stays tight until the end of the season. I hate it when one team is too far ahead. Unless it was Spurs of course!

Yeah, I was shocked. Total lapse of communication between Koscielny and Szscesny. Congrats to Birmingham. Goal celebration was a bit over the top considering the luckiness of the play and that one player who tapped/rubbed Koscielny's head after the goal was very unsportsmanlike.

Hehe only messing.
First I was like "OH NO!!" But then I laughed, then I cheered for Brum, then I sat and watched the replay.
I was laughing more at the situation... I mean minutes left to go and the same Arsenal that beat Barca throw away a trophy!

I dont understand how Szscesny spooned it away from himself?
He had set himself to catch it.
Did he change his body shape right at the last minute because he thought Koscielny was going to clear it?!

If you'd just scored the winner in a cup final I think you'd be pretty happy.

I think the Brum player rubbed (althought quite hard it seemed) Koscielny's head as a bit of a "unlucky son" sort of way.
It wasnt unsporting... but he was a bit heavy handed.

Anyway Rosicky hit Foster in the chest to say well done after a save and he did that pretty hard too.
Its just the emotion in the game and you can't take that out of Football.

Also Ben Foster was very good, he's no Joe Hart (lol) but he is very professional and is a good prospect for England.

Also (h'again) I've got to say well done to Stephen Carr (Birmingham's capt) I've never thought he was a great player but he did his job very well on Sunday and showed what you can do with hard work etc. Even if you're not a naturally skilled player.
He had retired from football when he left Newcastle, just shows you.

I'm not dwelling on the loss anymore. I got a bit emotional over it in defending my guys the days following the loss. Arsenal fans view things differently from the rest of the league I guess. It's just one of those things when it happens to you you notice every minor detail and it gets magnified. I see your point of view though. Wish I could debate this stuff in person in a pub or at home with some London fellas. That would be fun.

Watching the final, the announcers were going through the history of some of the Birmingham players. Inspiring story behind Stephen Carr. Foster is a good keeper too.

On a funny note. When I was picking teams to follow in the EPL way back last summer, I considered Birmingham because they are considered the Second City much like Chicago is. But instead I chose Arsenal who are in some sort of title drought. A team who always figure out a way to lose the big game or get handled by lesser teams. As a Chicago Cubs fan, this sounds all too familiar. Subconsciously, I wonder if my brain was forcing Arsenal on me on some "this is just the way it's going to be, Martin. You will suffer devastating losses and never experience a championship" lol

Thing is pure football wise (sigh) Arsenal are probably the best footballing team in the world (they did beat Barca the last time they met making them the best lol) but its about winning trophies and (urgh) Man Utd mix their style and it works.
But I'd rather see good football being played instead of Utd bullying opposition to try to get a last minute goal.

A good mix like City (hehehe) is what you want. A big strong physical team mixed with flair, skill and movement.

At the end of the day it is entertainment and as long as you're entertained its all good.
The highs wouldnt be anything without the lows.

Also if you're used to winning all the time then when you lose it will hurt more.

Although Arsenal do need to sort it out!

Wenger and Nasri face UEFA disciplinary cases

UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Arsenal FC coach Arsène Wenger and the English club's midfielder Samir Nasri following last night's UEFA Champions League round of 16 second leg against FC Barcelona in Spain.

Both are to face charges of improper conduct, and their cases will be heard by the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body on Tuesday 17 March.

Just more salt to the wound I guess. It should have been clear that Arsenal just wasn't going to win in Barcelona. Barca played their style of football expertly. Created chance upon chance upon chance while Wenger parked the bus. Sad to see my team play like that. I wonder if the outcome would have been different if RVP wasn't given the softest second yellow card imaginable. 11 v 11 is much different than 11 v 10 against Barca of all teams.

Now, on to focus on the League and FA Cup lol

Yep, gotta focus on Man Utd at Old Trafford on Saturday... more knock out football!

Well done to Spurs, was loving them singing "when the saints go marching..." slowly, good atmosphere.

Bloody European refs blowing up all the time when Crouchinho was near the ball... at least 7 fouls it said he commited.
