Thanks for all the help guys. Really appreciated it. A La Carte: good advice on the watts that really helped me find what I was looking for (plus hopefully then I didn't sound like a total shmuck asking stupid ass questions).

Found a fixed-up Sony str-v25 receiver circa '79/'80, silver plated front and all, from a local electronics repair shop so I'm good to go. Everything sounds great though one of the speakers needs work. Definitely loving the technics 1900. Now on to fixing the tonearm.

I remember having to go through a decidedly awkward and kilowatt guzzling setup with 2 amps/receivers back when I bought my first 1200 just to get the phono cable grounded and have some preamp action going...

(This is from a UK perspective) but they'll be similarities.

A receiver is an amp with a radio tuner included - which you may not want or need. I have uk tastes and a lot of hifi here is 'tuned' for uk tastes.

I'd suggest looking for amps by the Japanese brands like Yamaha (has a smooth signature sound), Denon, Pioneer etc.
In the time honoured tradition of recommending what you own, a Cyrus 6 is a good little amp.

More recent amps didn't have phono stages included, just line level (cd, tuner etc) so you may need a phono stage. If you're using a mixer then you should be sorted iirc. Quality wise, the japs don't really build duds. The 'sound' comes down to preferences and yours may be different to mine.....

The other thing to add is that extra watts helps 'grip' the music. You're not looking for out and out loudness, its the control that's important. Flabby bass is bad bass!

Was fairly certain Ocean Man would be on board with this purchase, but glad to see he's so enthusiastic about it. And if it wasn't for his high praises of technics in general I probably wouldn't have been so keen on buying it in the first place.

Got the 1900 for 150 with a new cartridge included, and a pair of boston acoustics a70's for 75. The tonearm is off-balanced, but from what you guys have said and from looking at the manual I think I can fix it. Thanks for the help.

Now I need to find a receiver. I've been researching, but would love any suggestions on a quality used receiver that should be relatively easy to find and not too expensive. Stuff on ebay is all over the place price-wise, especially for me not knowing much about the tech side of things, plus I'd be wary of buying something I can't listen to first, so it's hard to gauge what the proper value of some of this stuff is.

Any advice you guys can give would be much appreciated.

Have you tried cleaning the golden contacts on the inside of the tonearm yet, Po? The little eraser at the end of a pencil very works nicely for that and 4/5 times that solves the problem of a channel dropping out if that's the issue you're having. A bit of alcohol and a q-tip also work well if there happens to be more stubborn buildup.

good thing about those old Technics is that you can actually take em apart and fix them yourself if you're somewhat 'technic'ally inclined.

$200? i'd jump on that sh!t like white on rice.
a working one here for that price would be an instant purchase for me, but i am a pretty big Technics fan.
