there is a dope documentary called "Hip Hop Beyond Beats & Rhymes" that goes into a lot of depth on thie issue.

the necro CD with this month's HHC is listenable though and I won't lie, it does have some good tunes on there. But seeing a 12 page (!) spread with him and his crew brandishing hunting knifes, machetes, uzis etc etc is pretty sickening.

The P mini-article is cool though and Greenpeace was raving about the album but no Fun DMC review...?

Damn, dodo, that's insane... I was just listening to "Shallow Days" walking from the bus to work this morning. It's probably my all time favorite conscious-style, positive-tip hip-hop track.

I think the line you had trouble with was: "And hip hop is our voice, so we enlist that"

But yeah. Chief Xcel and Gab are dope as hell... when I'm not bangin out the P, of course.

I like the way that the song "shallow days" by blackalicious deals with the issue of gangster rap.

The rhyme is not laced with a gangsta touch

your right though mark, this is more important now than ever, because a lot of kids don't know and will never know that there is another side to hip hop thats not glamourisation of guns, violence, crime and mysogeny. So many people i know write off the whole genre because this is the highest profile of hip hop for some reason. Probably because its the most easily marketable to middle class suburban kids.

in the heat of the moment.. for what it was worth, i email the editor of HHC and expressed my opinion. no reply.

my only problem with it is that, sh!t like this is so infectious and influential on children in the UK.

i saddens me to think that they will miss a lot of hip hop history and culture because they may not consider it to be important or relevant to them, with todays fashionable gun/knife welding rappers

When i was a kid HHC was always the place to go for good reviews (DJ Greenpeace) and informative articles on groups....then everywhere in my town just stopped stocking it and to be honest i was a little gutted as i also used to buy my tapes from one of the mail order companies (ahh tapes). But when a few years later a noticed a copy of it in Tesco's i brought it and it was shocking!!! Just shows you how the mainstream has infested all the good this culture had/has. I just want to listen to and read about good Hip Hop and not gun slinging fools who cannot say a verse and hook-up a good beat.....is it too much to ask people....is??

You got that right mate . I just cannot believe the UK Hip Hop bible i grew up with and one of which i hold so dear has put not only Necro but his pathetic set of frankly laughable wannabe hardmen on the sacred front cover . Having watched their side splitting interview on UGHH.COM i thought no one would take them seriously for a second but it seems there are suckers born every second . How anyone can take Sean Strange serious is beyond me cause i find him hilarous

Naw, I completely understand, Alibi. I actually was listening to sh!t like Fatlip and Ugly Duckling non-stop for a few weeks and then had to scale back. Still like UD and the 'Lip, just sayin'. That's like pizza 3 meals a day for a week. Had to put some roughage in my music diet.

But I just feel like the old MCs that held a gun shot themselves in the foot (pardon the joke) on accident. I mean, I've got "Criminal Minded", but La Rock and KRS One were trying to use the gun as a symbol strength and unwielding force against what they felt was an environment that trapped them. The CIA dropped coke on the streets, the schools were weak. KRS was all about education, but the gun was a symbol that he was going to enforce that education any way he could. I felt like there was something behind it. He give his life for the streets, but that meant the life of his people. And even if you look at some early Busta Rhymes or whatever: it's about blowing you up with the beat or the raps. Nothing wrong with calling your music a weapon 'cause it's not gonna kill you. (If it could, that might be the way I'd go out)

but gangsta rap turned that all around. nowadays... I mean f***, there are bros that'd shoot you in the face for a car stereo that'd sell for ten dollars, or they'd saw your head off over a poor cut of coke. That's not strength, that's cowardice. Ego trippin', set trippin'... that's the downward spiral. People aren't using the gun as a symbol anymore, they're using it as a shield to hide behind. straight up.
