Yeah, for sure. It's a classic golden age trick. Personally, I'll filter the top end out as much as possible and use the low end to drive the beat. Then I'll chop up the mid section/top end and bring them in and out, maybe with some delay/effects. Sometimes I'll just use the low end as a bassline and find other sh!t to lay over it. Listen to the early Beatminerz stuff (esp Enta da Stage and Dah Shinin'), they did a lot of that - really bottom heavy sh!t. Beatnuts' World Famous, Onyx's Last Dayz, Brand Nubian's whole third LP... there are tonnes of examples but I don't have my records in front of me right now.
