It's finding that one record that you know was there wiating just for you.

I bought a lot of 45's on eBay that were mostly wack late-70's disco sh!t. There was an old country record in there too. When I played it, it was a song about a guy who goes streaking. Kinda funny I had just gotten off a one year probation for the same thing two weeks earlier. Stuff like that gives me goosebumps.

I hate being labeld as well, and it is sometimes hard to convey exactly what were trying to say on a message board, so I hear where your coming from. Appreciate the response, and for the record(haha great pun) I think we dig a lot more alike than we think.

No disrespect, but this sounds a lot like loop digging to me. I mean I guess if your in a hurray to produce a track and need a loop, but taking your time to explore the labels and artists is key to finding more and more dope sh!t. I'm not against diving in and finding new stuff, but to just pick up a record, listen for a sample, memorize where it is, and then buy it is just so sterile and disconnected from the music. It's not about just finding a dope sample, it's about finding music that you are very passionate about, that way the whole record meets your musical taste, not just one loop. Once you find a record that knocks you on your ass, you'll like the potential samples off that a lot more than some random record you just picked up. It isn't even about what genre you pick. I only use jazz as an example because it is a very broad medium. That is what this artform is really all about in the first place The Music

Your absolutely right, I'll be the first to admit I jumped the gun a bit. I had this idea you were just labeling me as someone who looks for the next big hook and thats all, sorry bro my fault. Hey Boneunit,

Bro chill, you sound pissed. No one is questioning your beat digging. As a matter of fact I'm glad you love the music as much as you do. As I said in my opening of my previous satment "No Disrespect". You have to understand my statement in response to your first. You have clarified your stlye of digging much better in this second response and it actually sounds a lot like my style as well. I don't stick to only specific lables like some sort of elite beat digger, but what I'm saying is use a dope label, ANY LABEL, as a pathway to finding other dope music that you love and dope samples. I also don't stick to certain years either. As I said before my recomendation from70-76 was just a broad based reference for begginers. But if you happen to notice that certain years were in music were more friutful than others for certian genres and depending on what year something was recorded, it can give you some insight to what it sounds like. This is just a good investigative tool in case you can't hear the record until you get it home. Again I want to claify that I'm not fronting on your style of digging, but merely responding with my point of view so that we can all learn something from each other. Understand though that your first statemetn was rather vauge as to your feelings on the topic and your second response was very insightful. Remeber, you responded to my comments first with a respectfull disagreement

That is one way to find a loop, why the hell not circle a track that sounds good? I mean wtf is wrong with saying, this song is nice, I am gonna circle it so I don't forget, because I will likely buy 25 records today and make sure I remember each and every peice that I like in particular.

What is a beat digger doing in the first place???? Digging for the loop that creates a tight beat, damn I'm staight I am a loop digger, but that doesn't make me any less of a music lover. In a hurry? What I never said I rush in their to buy and look for loops, when did I say that? Your approach is completely biased, look for only these labels, this type of music, from these said years. Basically your saying if I listen to a record, don't like the music, yet there is a dope measure wherein, I cannot use it because I don't appreciate the music? No disrespect but that is illogical. My approach is two fold: to look for good gems for a beat, that doesn't discredit in anyway whether or not I am a true music lover. I don't necessarely look for a "perfect loop" Here is what I do: I listen to the songs, skim thru them listening to them, if I like it I buy it, if I don't I don't buy it. Then when I get home I clean them, sitdown and listen from the first groove on A to the last on B, appreciating every note, measure, tempo, tonecolors, dynamics, every damn thing.Not every crate digger is an audiophile mang, not every audiophile is a crate digger! This thread was created for beat diggers, not audiophile purists. I am a little of both, I dig for beats, and like the music as a whole. Listen to Thes, using these old records for beats has taught him a new love for old music, same here in a way. I didn't know the beauty of old music until I started beat digging. I had to find out on my own, buy listening for the purpose of beat digging, in the beginning that was my main goal to look for loops. But it has evloved from that in the two and half years of my digging "career", now I more than love this old stuff.

Honestly I feel that that approach isn't always the best way to go, I mean some of the sounds I have lifted don't even come from funk or jazz related albums, or labels that would have that kind of music in their catalog. This technique works if you combine it with another, which is use the above said approach to weed thru all the christmas and other bullshizzle i.e. hits from the 30's and 40's with odd time signtaures and tempos, but purchase portable turntable, listen to the record, find the bar, circle the track with a pen so you don't forget where it was and buy the sunbitch. That is what I do, most of the time, if you love the sample the song will grow on you as well. Word, love the music, 60's and 70's had some really interesting and well thought artists.

Suprisingly enough sometimes the wacker the cover, the better the record, but that doesn't always work. The best way to dig is by set list and label. The reason this is the best way is because if you hear a great record and love it for what it is, not just because it has a sample, you want to find similar funk, so follow the path of the label or the artists that were on it. Soon after that you will develop a taste for what certain labels sound like and which artists and players you like. This only really works if you are about loving the music as well, not just being a loop digger. Don't abuse this tip, or take it for granted because it took me a while to really get a feel for it. Just trying to help a fellow fan out. Start out with dollar jazz picks anywhere from 70'-76'. Year is a key tell tale sign as well.
