So the idea of not having a rapper on the album was a direct result of the drama from OST?

Yeah, it was a xweird time because a lot of people were keeping us in the dark about how the record was doing and as far as I knew the record was bombing. I had no idea that the people really liked it. See I wish somebody would have told me that because at that point I couldn't deal with rap anymore. I didn't think I could make another Hip-Hop album after that.

So if you knew how successful OST was Lifestyle Marketing may not have happened.

No, it wouldn't have happened because if I had the sales figures and I knew what was happening I would have been excited about the record and been ready to move forward. It was a real questionable time because the record label had us in limbo in more ways than one; they didn't let us know how well the album did. It wasn't until Stepfather that our booking agent said, 'Do you know how many units OST sold?' and I told him I had no idea. Once he told me, that prompted me to get off of OM because we realized, 'holy sh!t, where's the money?' For 3 or 4 years we were in the dark and that's why there was no PUTS album being made. We didn't think it was worth it.

Were you able to reclaim any of that money?

We were, but it was difficult because not only did we need to get the money back but we needed to get off of the label. We still had another record to do with them, which would have been Stepfather, but we weren't motivated. So we just kept touring and time kept slipping by. So finding out what the record sold, getting of the label, and doing Stepfather, all happened like a chain reaction. In the meantime though, I was working on Lifestyle Marketing because I was done with Hip-Hop.

...i honestly hope this album does better than the rest, and of course i wish for the same success to tha p going forward. and we as fans can definitely make a difference--whatever it may be.

Not trying to knock your way of promoting them. Your blog sounds pretty interesting (can't access it now cuz it keeps timing out).

I think the PUTS' biggest problem is not spreading the word, their biggest problem is probably pirating. I chastise people that ask for me to burn a PUTS CD for them. And I have been known to delete my buddies stolen PUTS files. All in attempts to get people to buy their albums.

There is always the emotional appeal to the problem, though. These two artists work their asses off and make damn good music in the process. Why can't you spend a few bucks to support their music and get the full experience. Comics, board/drinking games, beer cozies!?!?! You cant download that sh!t!

Although, if there is some trend we think of starting I'm in.

What I am trying to help build is WORD OF MOUTH. I am not really worried about their album sales. I want PUTS to have packed shows and people anxious to give them money in support. I don't care about filesharing as that's a vital way that people find new music. Sure, some folks are cheap and don't buy sh!t. Those folks were never going to buy the PUTS CD.

In the world of PR and Marketing, you want to see organic word of mouth on your behalf. It makes it easier for Thes and Double K do what they do best - appreciate their growing fan base, award their devoted followers and continue to make quality music without the stress of wondering when that next check is going to come.

Letting 5 of your friends hear PUTS in your crib will only do so much, because you're only one guy. It might help if they are bombarded with talk from everywhere. That's how the groundswell is built.

I wish I had thought of this sooner. I think a great idea to help the P is by sharing your experiences on your various social networks.

I have a blog that I do a bit of "virtual consulting" for creative artists, namely music acts. I made a post about how PUTS has been great bout putting together great packaging for their last couple of records. The post - Masters of Content: People Under The Stairs - has a video of me opening my Carried Away CD.

You guys should do the same. Whether it be Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, other message boards... share your experience with the material. It will help build the word-of-mouth and possibly help PUTS go viral at some point. You can be a catalyst for it!

Share your links here and let's build the wiki. Someone set a trend and let's all follow it. Like make your own "Trippin' at the Disco" video with your cat or something... let's go!
