cool story SLC... redemption and re-integration through the P. I like it.

I was pretty lucky, I went into hip hop through a good friend who was a fiend for the underground, so the first hip hop I listened to was like Beastie Boys, Cypress Hill, and Wu-Tang, and from there it branched out. I never really listened to that much gangsta stuff, bit of Dre and a bit of NWA, but not really.

Can I just add........ SHABBA!!

legendary stuff.

I'm feelin' all the R&B love in here! I grew upon all that sh!t: TLC, SWV, New Edition, Silk, Bobby Brown, Mr. Sweat, Guy, PM Dawn, Boyz II Men, Bell Biv Devoe, Heavy D., and I gotta mention my man Shabba Ranks - Xtra Naked... that was the sh!t back in the day! haha i remember tryin' to mack on the ladies with some of the said blastin' in the background thinking ,"yah man, I'm the sh!t!" Ahh those were the days...

mambo7891 said:
slightly off topic but whats everyones views on "Gangsta!" rap? is it good? rubbish? what u all think?

Peace

This for me is a touchy subject... At first, it fueled my love for Rap/hip hop. I loved Too $hort, NWA, Geto Boys, etc. After the Pioneering groups starting to get massive exposure, it seemed that Gangsta Rap turned into a gimmick to make dough. It changed the whole landscape. FUN turned into serious, dark, and money driven, dudes started rappin' about the same sh!t over and over and for me it was a huge turnoff. I, being from a suburb of a not-so-big city, didn't have access to what we call Underground Hip Hop groups because the Internet wasn't invented yet.. I mean to us back then, 2nd II None was super underground... The Mainstream movement led me to discouragement as a fan & I just let it go one day. I gave up on Hip Hop...
I probably went like 6 or 7 years disliking Hip Hop, focusing more on Alt & Classic Rock & Reggae...

So as a fans of the P, y'all can imagine how I reacted the first time I heard OST's Intro where Thes says he used to be a fan at one time but lost hope, so he took sh!t into his own hands... To me this was like finding a long lost friend! I could relate to all the stories Thes & Dub kick and before you know it, I was not only reviving my love for Hip Hop, but came to realize how much music in general that I was missing out on. To this day it still blows my mind how, if it wasn't for Hip Hop, I'd not care nearly as much about our musical history and what there is out there to digest & enjoy.

Sorry for the long-winded response, but to answer your question mambo... Yes, IMO, Gangsta Rap is rubbish & played out.

I love TLC. I love new edition, Jodeci.. all of them. I am referring to people like that.. I know they are from the 80s but they were there throughout the 90s as well.. the 80s was a great decade of music too!!

@dodo.. i dont know who makes the trends now a days.. I mean, all the music sounds the same for a reason.. the fans like it (unfortunately) and I am sure the big guys are telling them what to put out there...I am sure artists like their own music but sometimes I dont think that thats exactly what they want. But who knows?? I could be wrong. I just wish there were some REAL singers out there right now. Man i just miss the passioN!

Gangsta rap... hmmm.... I think it's pretty easy to see that a lot of gansta rap is purely image based, and for that reason, I'm out...

I think gangsta rap has got to the stage where it's turned into a parody of itself. I mean back in the NWA days or whatever, you could see that there was some "realness" about the artists, whatever "realness" means. I guess that I mean there was some credibility to what they were saying, whereas nowadays it's all bullsh1t innit.

^^
"Gangsta rap" always throws me off a bit, haha. I can never decide whether to like it or despise it. Now, I'm a white kid who dresses hip hop, and yea I smoke a lil weed and drink some, and I will say that the town/neighborhood I live in is kinda rough sometimes (I live in a small white town but it's surrounded by cities with tons of crime; it tends to flow into here); but in no way am I "gangsta". So, I can't relate my life to the music like I can to PUTS, or other good underground artists like them, but there are still some gangsta rap artists I kinda like. But there is also gangsta rap I hate. And no matter what, I HATE how violent the lyrics are; I'm a peaceful guy.
I'll say I've always liked NWA and all of the members, same with Wu-Tang Clan, and same with Mobb Deep, and I like Ice-T, but I really don't like Biggie Smalls. His music is just annoying, repetetive, and boring to me. I like Jay-Z, Young Jeezy, Tupac, Snoop Dogg, and Nas, but I CAN"T STAND Eminem (if he's gansta rap, I don't even know anymore haha), DJ Khaled, Lil Wayne, Gucci Mane, Drake (even though his old stuff is pretty good), or anyone else from the Young Money label for that matter. But even then sometimes, there are a couple songs off of the Young Money label I can bob my head to, and nearly all of the artists I have mentioned that I liked have come out with songs I find utter sh!t.
I just don't know haha.
