It’s been 2 years since Mike passed (1/30/21) and 20 months since I’ve produced an episode of my podcast The House List. In 1999 I interviewed People Under The Stairs for the first time, on Cambridge St. in Mid City LA. It was my also my first time visiting Los Angeles, I slept in my car that night. Since then they’d release 12 albums, many of which I covered in the press, filmed for my own archive or booked their tours for. After Mike’s passing it seemed very real that we may never hear anything from the group again. Then Thes called me about a studio session at @64sound - he was assembling a band, to pay tribute to Mike, for what later he’s pen as a ‘tone poem’. I played some percussion, we raised a glass of that extra potent Double K beer. Just a few weeks ago, while happened to be at another memorial, this time in Carlsbad, Thes called and asked if he could sample some portions of my 2018 interview with Double K for that same project. I was moved by the thought - and last Friday, the album/tone poem, “Farewell, my friend” was released. Today you can listen to an in-depth convo and an all new House List, with Thes about the process, and about Mike. We included a clip of my 1999 interview - lifted from the original Hi-8 video. This was edited and engineered by Mike’s brother, Elijah. In this post I included some random images, us in Banff in Feb ‘18, the marquee of Troubador Aug ‘16, a ‘street team’ letter from Om Records to me in 2000 when I drove across country dropping PUTS flyers at record stores while filming a documentary, and an URB article I wrote circa 2000.
