I have to agree with yoyo on this, i voted yes, not because its a much better system, but because its a change of system, i want proportianal representation in the long run, but for now il settle. Personally, my biggest reason for voting yes is so that the smaller parties can have a better chance, as i see it, currently a vote for say the green party would be a wasted vote so people tend to tactically pick one of the big three (con, lab, lib) wheras in the new system, i could vote for the green party as my 1st (the party i most want to get in) and failing them getting in, my support for the greens would be noted but a second vote for one of the big three and so on, it should also be noted, you dont actually have to rank your preferences, you can put a 1 for labour and thats that, they wont make you rank them... he says... lol.

Wel see anyways, its 4PM so counting has just started... fingers crossed.

Oh I didnt realise there were regional government elections at the same time, but thats not for all area's tho is it?

Who's responsibilty is it to explain the system properly to the masses?

Surely if Clegg really wanted to get this through he would have done a better job of explaining it, instead of getting a load of 'celebs' to say why it would be good.

The reason I said the one vote one person comment is because all I've heard is that you can pick one candidate, or two or three etc. Which is like backing 3 horses in one race.
They've been explaining it saying if your first choice doesn't have enough votes then it goes to your 2nd choice... so thats like 2 votes?!

From what I can gather (which appears to be not a lot!) It's not going to help smaller parties because they won't secure that many votes so it will go to peoples 2nd or 3rd choice and that'll likely end up being one of the big parties?
Or is a 1st place choice worth like 3 points and a 2nd place worth 2 points? Or is it just a list in order of preference?

I'm more confused now

The money is being spent anyway on local council and regional government elections. And whatever you vote, the money's already been spent. That argument about money is irrelevant to the discussion about the voting system.

and don't get it twisted, AV is still one vote per person.

I'm not especially pro-AV but I am against all the reactionary mis-information that's being spread about...

The reason I put the money thing up was not against the Yes to AV or for No to AV... just surely there are better things we should be spending money on right now instead of spending it on a vote for a "half-arsed version of proportional representation".
Although we just had the Royal Wedding which cost a fair bit no doubt but did bring in revenue.
Anyway...

The AV System that has been proposed (and what we are voting for/against) doesn't seem to be what we really want.

It should be one vote per person.
But a fairer way to reprezent each persons vote needs to be reached somehow!

Most of the AV things I have seen have been Yes to AV... well down this way anyway.

The whole thing is a sham. Give us a referendum but only let us vote for a half-arsed version of proportional representation. Cameron is laughing at us all.

Vote No to AV (because you actually want a better system than AV) and we'll be stuck with no change.
Vote Yes to AV (because you want some kind of improvement) and we get stuck with AV, but probably never true PR.

The £80 million bill for the referendum is being paid whatever you vote for! That's a bullshizzle anti-AV campaign. They're paying for the referendum regardless!!

Basically, it comes down to do you want to continue a system of tactical voting and wasted votes?

I'm going to vote YES! But I think it won't get voted through because:
1) there's not enough public explanation of the system for a lot of people to understand what they are actually voting for
2) the people who will actually go out and vote are more likely to be people riled up by the No campaign than people enthusiastic about AV to vote Yes

I think its important to vote because then you're at least having a say.
And people laid their lives on the line for our freedom to vote.
So we owe it to them.

From my understanding the sensible thing is to vote No to AV?!
