Your MPC has the filters needed to do this. I'm sure Thes One and other people like Pete Rock who do that type of filtering mainly just use the MPC filters for it. Experiment with the 'freq' and 'res' settings on the filters and you'll get that sound.

If I understand you right I think it's just a lowpass filter that you need to apply to the main sample. filters down/away all the top end so you are left with just the mids and bass end. Thes does this all the time.

you'll hear it come in during the verse. I've got 2 technics 1200s, vestax pro mixer, mac book, audacity, and an Akai MPC 2000xl, and a sh!t ton of vinyl.

I've got no idea how to do this on your setup, but turn down the treble a bit then turn up the mid a bit. Of course what Thes and other pro producers actually do is probably alot more complicated but I think thats the basis of what your lookin for.

Hey I'm new to building beats, got me a 2000 xl akai, I've been paying attention to a lot of hip hop including PUTS and when the verse comes, the main beat sounds like its been ran through some muted filter? Does anyone know how to achieve this in Audacity? Or what the plugin or filter is officially called??
