what I like to do is chop loops and rearrange them to keep it funky and varied, but if my sample has prominent drums on it I'll lay down my own drums with the MPC. I also mix breaks with my own drums to make it sound more natural, and ALWAYS fade drum hits out to prevent choppiness

I actually prefer to take a drum loop and chop it up

Say the loop is this : Kick-Kick-Snare-Kick-Kick-Snare

I use my FL Studio's Edison editing software to chop:

Then you can assemble the kick, snare, etc. manually

So now I got this Kick-Snare-Kick-Kick-Kick-Snare

i like my snares crunchy and my kicks punchy, so i normally program my drums... but i also need that organic wooosh that makes it raw. layering snares is crucial if you need it to slap your audience. concerning the question about what makes a snare hip hop, anything is hip hop if you're hip hop enough make it bang.

its been ages since this topic was started but

yeah thats it, if your'e not looping your writing/sequencing the pattern yourself.
but as mentioned earlier layering/combining these methods is the way.

I really want to hear this album, where can I get it? is ebay my only bet?

experiment with eq/compression/layering or stacking. (the right sample is the key)

what do you mean with drum loops and drum patterns? i mean what's the diffrence?

drum loop = you loop a drum part that repeats again and again??
drum pattern = you chop up a drum part and make your own drums??

if you have the album from thes : live at the rootdown soundclash then listen to the song 10.the 6th cup. i just love those drums on this song (the whole song is great) and i was wondering how he gets these drums so tight. what does he use? filters and stuff, or were those drums already like this on the vinyl?how does he mess with does drums on the mpc? what do you guys think? do you think it's a drum loop or a drum pattern?

what do you guys do to make your drums to sound fat and nice??

True, just do whatever feels comfortable to you. I don't dig a lot of material that has heavy drums. I try to stay away from that sometimes because then it allows me to go crazy with drums patterns and not have to kinda..stay to the original loop's pattern. Sometimes that is.

yea everyone does, when people say i only use loops, i know hes talking about chooping em up or just looping em, you can go both ways. But everyone chops kicks and snares up.
