Is it me or does 'Step In', 'pass the 40', 'pumpin' and 'tuxedo rap' sound very differant to all the other PUTS sh!t. Dont get me wrong I've been listening to PUTS non stop for a long time now and when I bought Stepfather last year I was shocked to here the differance in these tracks compared to all the other songs People have done before on their otha 4 albums and numerous specials.....
to be honest I really didnt like the change as it sounded to new school and processed, even though I have 100% faith in PUTS keepin it real I was scared when listening to the first tracks of Stepfather that the whole album was gunna be like that....sh!t I'm wrong judging from the rest of the tracks on Stepfather but I hope PUTS' next album isnt all like these tracks.....

Posts: 291Posted 19 years ago #I personally think the direction they took is a great one. Im tired of listening to jazzy loops with drums on them. Stepfather sounds like its breaking ground. Mid 90's sounding hiphop sounds dated and forced. And from an artists perspective, its just boring making the same music over and over again. -

Alot of the loops they use are jazzy but they're always gunna be differant....I've and I guess everyones been loving they're sh!t since the first album so I dont see how we can get board of it...!! No what u mean though for real.

in regards to changin styles and all that, i guess it comes down to the quality of material. Bob dylan went electric, and his music was as good as ever. then you got someone like Black Eyed Peas, who also changed their direction, and became crap in the process. I think the PUTS' change is praiseworthy indeed. Im sure Stepfather will grow on you. It has for me.

Each album they've put out has its own mood and I really think the Stepfather is an amazing project with a whole new direction. Anyways, I can't wait to cop your new 12 man... sh!t will be dope!

At the same time I love old music, just like the P really and Stepfather brought with it a slight essance of poppy commercial beats, which I spoze was a little wierd in a way. They're still stickin with the same rules so its all cool....still love them for ever 'thats right'!

Posts: 4Posted 18 years ago #while pass the 40 and pumpin arent anywhere near my favorite tracks, i was happy to hear puts trying different artistic variations, and taking courageous turns. the best part is that some of the tracks on stepfather are "best ever" material. to put it simply, stepfather overall was fresh. -

I mean its ok to change styles get new influences, but then again I think most people love(d) the p just for beeing so east on the west and P were real good at this. This new stuff just aint that steezy, not the style, its just that the rap just doesnt go too well with the breaks and stuff..
They sounded a lot like the '90ies in New York and I guess that was the time where most P fans really are about.
I've been a huge fan for years, but with stepfather I basicly stopped listenin to em... and got back to New York and north carolina based hiphop . I still get good feelings on old songs but it just aint the same. :-?
I was at their gig in Winterthur, Switzerland, nontheless.

I listen to Radio 2 man....I buy all my music, LP's Cd's....wateva man cuz you cant download the sh!t I and all the people on this website listen to. Yeah i listen to drum and bass, dance and some other new music....that side of things is going pretty well....you could say its in its golden age....like the KRS one and furious five's....we have just had the Prodigy's, Faithless and DJ hype's.....its moving from its original days (which came later than Hiphops early, original days, its sugerhill days..) into its golden age with people like Pendulem and Fat Boys slims...in Hip hop terms I see this age in new dance and D&B as hip hops Biz Markie, Tribe and early Gangster death row sh!t. Getting to the point, I feel that Hip Hop has more turned into Hip 'pop'....its turned sh!t.....something Dance and D&B has yet to do.....its turned into the Jay Z's and f***ing 50 cents and Akons.....so when I first heard the P I was like 'OH SNAP!'.....man it opened up my books....it f**king filled them with all the music I listen to today. Before I was looking for the music I really wanted to hear...the 'P' provided me with that....it was the beginning of my hip hop book man, and I'm talking Jazz too man....it lead me to seek all the samples in all there songs....all the tribe called Quest sh!t, bizMarkie, chubb rock, gangstrarr, Dj Alibi, Zion 1, UD, Brand Nubian, De la soul....and so much more...this is the sh!t i listen to and appriciate because of the 'p'...its this real sh!t that I love because of the 'p' and the sh!t I'm gunna always listen to. When I'm 80 I'm gunna be bumpin my head to this sh!t. I neva lived in the 90's or the 80's....i wasnt privilidged to be in the ages that hip hop thrived and started in.....so when I hear the P in stepfather rapping on 'tuxedo rap' and 'pass the 40' beat I just feel pissed of cuz that just aint there sound. Yeah people must feel differantly, you could argue that they are breakin new boundaries....thats cool and I respect that but I just feel that they are turning into this processed beat sh!t. The P should be proud that they are still creating music that is original!!....no one can deny it....tracks like 'pumpin' and 'step' have processed beats man...it sounds like they've made em on a beat machine and if I remember correctly the P arnt about that. If they have 4 of these tracks on their latest album....who knows...the next album might be full of them, and there we go...we have another comercial album. I love the P and I sure wish that there next album is filled with their same old sh!t. I could listen to Dub K and thes ones jazz samples all my f***ing life....I love Thes and Double.....please dont change your sh!t!! Bring out a Jamboree Lp or a Days like these Lp next time...leave Tuxedo rap on the CD. Peace. P for ever. Sorry about the essay.

I can dig what everyones saying and opinions are very different on this subject which is obviously cool.
For me Stepfather grew on me. First listen all the way through I remember thinking Step In Was Dope aswell as Flex Off the Jamboree's, You, Days Like These and a few others. I love the lyrical content how it's just so varied and both Chris & Mike touch on alot of subjects.
The killer for me was More Than You Know. I was just so stoked to hear the P doing a track like that.. Also cuz I can really relate to this track. Thes & Double are obviously alot older than when they did the previous albums and I think you can really tell because their sound is so much more mature with both production and rhymes.. I think it's good to see them progressing and like Alibi said Stepfather sounds like it's breaking ground. Also I totally get not wanting to stick to the same sound as when I make beats I'm always looking for new sounds.
It's like Dilla went through so many changes and was always trying different things. Primo however has stayed relatively the same with his beats and is always dope to hear some new Primo sh!t -->(Big Shug-Play it)
I like the whole album now though..I guess it was just getting used to a slightly different sound. I listen to Pass The 40 sometimes but ye I was surprised too to hear that track but hey it's different and kinda dope in some ways.
Circus man i gotta say the P are in No Way going into 'Processed Beat sh!t' Look on the back of Stepfather... MPC 3000, SP 1200, MPC 2000 etc.. Thats pretty much what the P have been using since day one.. Classic Beat making Tools, so i'm not sure what you mean by beat machines. I'm not too sure what you mean by 'processed' either really.. They're still using samples and drum breaks and there aint no Casio Keyboard shite in there.... 'Pack up that keyboard we don't play that sh!t round here' And I dunno about using the word 'Commercial', maybe more accessible. Don't worry about the essay though man..think my post has turned into that too. But you gotta talk about what you feel passionate about right! Anyway thats just my two cents as everyone anywhere on any forum in the world says.. haha

I'm sorry to say that, but its just not true, and Thes even agrees in some ways. At least I interpreted it as this, when he said

We would be in the studio making a track and Double K and I would love it, but then we would look at each other and think that the fans are going to hate this. At that point we were thinking, 'damn should we even put this out?' What was happening with Stepfather was we were finding our own direction, our own sound. We weren't ashamed to admit influence by Pete Rock and Premier, and our first two albums were representative of those influences. We became good at expressing ourselves through those constructs, but they weren't really our ideas. OST was the best album that I could make within those lines, particularly with the New York style of beat making. So when we made Stepfather we moved homes, moved our studio, and I wasn't listening to Hip-Hop and everything just stopped. All of a sudden we knew what direction we were going in, and it was our direction. Which means the music they did, is not 100% theirs.

Btw this is quite funny since this is the most old-P-Style Track on this LP, in my humble opinion.
