PUTS released a 12" with seperate tracks of all the dope beats as individual songs in there own right featuring 'Time Machine', 'UD's', 'Kidd Lexx' & 'JazMak'. Was fecking dope. A shame but I guess it will remain a dream! -

A shame but I guess it will remain a dream!That would be so dope! I absolutely love what they did with the song, especially in first 30 seconds with the abrupt scratch and change of pace, but even that dusty sounding, laid-back opening beat and Double K verse were sounding right!

Posts: 3,255Posted 12 years ago #Well, technically it's all a Tribe feat. LONS sample, with the QTip and Busta parts being used... the "cycles" line is QTip, but I knew what disiskurt meant. I'm sure the homie's heard more than Scenario, yo. Most of the people on this board are probably tribe wizards. I own all their major sh*t, but you guys and your collections put me to shame (well... maybe I've got you beat on PUTS, haha).
Tip's been used in "Schooled in the Trade", and I think the "oh my god!" used in Trippin At The Disco was him too (although Busta's the one who made THAT line famous, haha... I can't even look at the words "oh my god" without thinking "oh my gahd yes oh my gaaaaahhd")... I'd have to look around a bit to see if/what Busta's been sampled on...
My favorite sample from the new album is that Biz one "n---a please, you work for UPS!"... I've also got most of the major biz work thru All Samples Cleared, and that guy's the best. (Now I've got to go listen to I Need A Haircut immediately.)

Actually it's pretty much impossible to confuse 'the Abstract and the Dragon' with one another, too, as they both have such distinct, memorable voices. (Cue Questlove from the Rapaport doc saying "Tip is very low, Phife is very high'.)Good call on 'Schooled in the Trade' and 'Trippin At The Disco', Sac; if you need a quick-fix for your OMG issue I'd suggest playing Blahzay Blahzay's 'Danger' a few times.

We're some correcting m.f.ers up in the forum lately, aren't we? Reminds me of a bunch of old dudes in a barber shop arguing about who fought who in what venue in what year, and who won... Posts: 36Posted 12 years ago #Yeah, I was being incredibly vague/obtuse on that one. For me to give the impression that I was confusing Q-Tip and Busta is pretty embarrassing, I must say. I was referencing the Tip sample as a silly/stupid way to say that they used a Busta sample ("heel up wheel up, bring it back come rewind" from Scenario) for the first time since the very beginning, the "rap is business music, hip-hop is cultural music" (from LONS's Syntax Era) that ended the intro on The Next Step. It didn't work, lol.
Tribe is incredible though, and most heads are pretty familiar with their non-Scenario work. What is a shame is that LONS is pretty much only known for that song (and although the group was apparently on shaky ground from the beginning, the huge popularity of Busta's verse laid the groundwork for him to go solo.)

Can't find any bona-fide album reviews of 12SP yet, though...
I found some guy on YouTube reviewing it, but... man, this guy needs to write his thoughts down before he rolls tape. This 4-min video could've been like 1 minute if he'd collected himself properly. I think I'm hearing that he's not a fan, but he's scattered as f***. Highlight of his review: "doctor feelgood... is good... it makes you feel good." (Dude, PUTS is a wrap if this video gets out in the open!!

pssh)Yeah man I seen the video a couple days ago. I hate the way he says PUTS in the 18 seconds. I never say it that way not to sound like an ultra fan boy. Arent we all tho? LOL but I feel like the guy in the video is a tad awkward and was getting camera shy. I dont even consider that to be a review. Just saying I want to actually read or watch another video. That one stunk.

Posts: 1,879Posted 12 years ago #Okay so I have been listening to 12SP virtually non-stop since receiving it. I don't have much more to add than many of the views that have been expressed already so here are a few things that stood out to me...
1- I don't want to say it's like a greatest hits album because it most DEF stands on its own as far as a conceptual piece, but I feel like PUTS has come full circle and this album has a flavor of all their past albums within it.
2- First listen through Ste.For Reefer made me bug out, they way they cut that first beat out pissed me off... until I heard the rest of the song. All the tempo/beat changes work very well together and make up for not follow through with that ill bass line at the beginning. I still have my fingers crossed for a B-side Single release of the entire opening track, it's just way to fresh to not let it see the light! Right?!
3- Speaking of bugging out, I was really flipping when I heard Poison drop...OMG. I think the way that they use and reference pop culture/digging references that directly relates to things I love(d) is what really draws me into their music. Dr. feelgood is another one of those as well.
4- As always the lyrics are complex and witty, yet humorous and simply to the point when needed. The first line that jumped out at me was from The Strand:
I palaver with all my fans and find a common ground that's real
We press it on vinyl, it can't be killed
If you throw it away, eternity rockin' a landfill
Until I'm refound or reground, you never know
But infinitely longer than a DatPiff download5- The only song that I wasn't feeling right off was LA night... Now I know what y'all are thinking, CRAZY! right? Well, as soon as I heard that song from the vinyl source and my booming DJ system I was hooked! The bass on that song is a huge part of the aesthetic for that song imo and I was totally missing out by listening through a low quality system. "Y'all better get hip, and get off this trip"!
6- I was so pumped to hear the beat that Thes was dancing his off to in that video he posted months ago(couldn't remember where I saw it) made it onto the album a.k.a Umbrellas. "Never trust a producer that can't dance"!
LOVE the album...
