   thought it would be a cool idea for a thread devoted to those old turntables we all must have kicking around... like my Technics SL-Q202 i found in someone's garbage at the side of the road and the like.

   my recent score is a 1978 Dual 621...

   

   

   it's actually setup for playing Quadrophonic records, if you can imagine... not that i have a receiver capable of such a thing. the stylus and catridge that are on it are pretty much toast anyway.

   i had to take it all apart to try and get the auto features working properly, and MAN, those German Engineers were not f***ing around when they designed this bad boy... check it out:

   

   turned out i needed to make myself a new "steuerpimpel", basically a little nub that runs the auto start feature (which is pretty damn cool when it is set to 45 rpm)... any Dual owners out there probably know what i am talking about, damn things are infamous.

   anyhow, i have a question for any vintage TT nerds out there:

   what would be the best catridge/stylus combo for this table?
   i know it has a rather light tonearm, so i can't just put any old thing on there, or i would put my spare M97xE on there... any recommendations? this sh!t kinda baffles me.

   Umm headshell looks tricky, how do you attach carts to the headshell?!
   Is that the issue?
   'Cause as long as you can get a cart on the headshell, the weight of the tone arm shouldn't matter as long as its counterbalanced?!

   the headshell has this weird little gizmo that holds the cartridge...

   

   it's kinda funky.

   i've been warned to not put too heavy a cart/stylus combo on there or it will chew up my (precious) records.

   something to do with "compliance-something-something"

   whatever that means, i'm no rocket surgeon.

   i could always just replace it with the same as what's on there, but sh!t is wack expensive, i think due to the quadrophonic thing.

   need a cheaper option, things are getting skinny at the OceanMan & OceanWoman residence lately.

   My stepfather has this kind of Dual, a tad bit older. He does not use it anymore though..I myself have SL1200 and T80 which are not that vintage.

   my recent score is a Technics SL-1700 (mark 1)... so beautiful.

   

   damn thing is built like a tank... over 20 lbs. under the hood, i think it is essentially a 1200, but with auto-return/shutoff.

   i love it. i got it from that diggers paradise i was telling you about in the 'old wax' thread.

   my digging buddy and i are actually headed back in there for the day tomorrow. hell yeah.

   Dang, these are some cool tables. My parents just hooked me up with the Audio Technica 120, and it's nice. I've already set the tone arm up to be scratch-ready, and I ordered a Shure M447 stylus from Amazon... it's on it's way in the mail right now. From what I understand, the 120 is like a "budget" 1200 (some cheaper parts, but essentially the same rig).

   oh HELLS YEAH

   the AT-LP120 is a wicked deck.

   the lack of auto-return is always a deal breaker for me though, ever since that morning i woke up on the couch to what was left of my new stylus grinding out the runout on a record... sometimes drinking until i can't see and records don't mix.

   A buddy of mine had a pair of 120's back in the day (I almost bought them cuz I couldn't afford 1210's - ended up with vestax year later.....). They (120's) were good decks as I record, good sound, well made.

   What is this auto return thing? My Systemdek doesn't even have speed selection!!!!

   auto-return is common on older (non-DJ) turntables, it just lifts the tonearm and returns it to its rest when the record finishes playing... some of them shut off too.
   there is an aftermarket one you can install that gets pretty good reviews, but i've never seen it in action.

   going in on a MAJOR dig in the city just now!

   but i can't find my damn camera. oh well. i know my buddy who turned me on to this place wouldn't appreciate me snappin pics too, so i'll take the high road. (i was planning on taking photos when he was in the other room)

   i'll let y'all know what i come up with when i get home tonight.

    I know it's not 'vintage' as such but my Pro-ject P1 turntable from the mid 90's is surely classed as old these days?

    However, despite the fact that this is a vintage turntable thread, I'm throwing my Dad's (which is now mine) vintage Warfdale receiver into the mix up...she's a beauty:

    Similar to OceanMan I know f*** all about the inside of these relics, but I did manage to get the light bulb working again on the receiver...but changing the bulb and hoping for the best!

    say what you will, Technics remain my favorite turntables, period. my SL-1700 is a beast.

    Good news I suppose, but TBH my excitement is severely dampened by the fact that I expect these things to be crazy expensive...
    All the 1200/1210 models since the MKIIs had rather unnecessary gimmicks like pitch reset buttons and the like added to them and if memory serves Technics used those as an excuse to nearly double the price by the time the MK5? was released...

    Good for you.
    I gather it'll be a while before the actual retail models will be avialable however, unless you want to pay (even more) through the nose for the "ltd. edition" early bird bollocks with a numbered plaque.
