Posts: 3,255Posted 12 years ago #So, here's what's up: I attended the video shoot yesterday. Par'n me if this is a little disjointed: I'm running on 2 hrs sleep. I still went to work today ('cause I'm a dumb*ss about responsibilities), even though I got home at 3:55 a.m. this morning.
First thing's first: I can't divulge any info regarding the actual song, video theme, or any other relevant details. Thes was pretty explicit about it in his email to the 40 people who were selected for the shoot. You can ask, but I won't tell, even if you chase me down and beat me up in an alley.
I'll still try to give an accounting of the day, albeit edited for content.
On Friday night, I get an email saying that I was selected. I wasn't planning on going, but something inside me said "Dude, you're 31, how many more chances like this will you get??", so I decided to be wild and do something unexpected. Sactown to L.A. is a 5.5-hour-drive, so I left at 10:30 a.m. to be at the shoot at 5 p.m. There was absolutely NO traffic, and I had some really fast drivers in front of me, and I just tailed some of them, so I busted the drive in 5 hours (dangerous!) and got there an hour and a half early. I was the first one there.
Waited around a sec, then saw Double K. We talked about a bunch of randomness (Richard Pryor, his dog, him never getting a Fun DMC vinyl from Gold Dust [bastards!], etc.), and I met his brother (who also was an extra in the vid) & sister (who was doing photography around the set). I guess Thes & Double had been there all day filming their solo vid shots (I actually saw some of it, it looks amazing). Thes was down on the set the whole first part of the story, handling business. Meanwhile, Revolutionary Rhythm and some other cats pull up across the street, form a cipher around the car stereo and freestyle for like an hour straight. It was fresh!!
The other 39-or-so "extras" start filtering in, and they're a hodge-podge of actors who don't know the group at all and fans who probably can't act (like me). Still, it's a little awkward, but some people strike up convos and things cool out a bit. The stylist was going around, checking costuming... and then there was like an hour and a half delay (!!!) so some of the extras took off for a while. They pretty much all came back later, and there was a little food and a little beer for everyone, so no one was complaining too much.
Anyway, I was selected to be in the first scene involving extras, and it took forever to set up, but in the meantime, I'm in a hallway with Thes and Double and a few other people, and we're all joking around (they're baggin' on my costume & showing me some of the rushes & bits of the new song), and we finally get down to action. This one asian girl and I get wild in-frame, and I find it hilarious (can't wait to see it in the vid; I probably look like a nerd).
Then we go back up and wait for another long while. In the meantime, Double K introduces me to Blewfoot and "D" (from "My Boy D"... he's gone through several Cadillacs since 2009, haha), and we shoot the sh*t for a while. Blewfoot is a real chill cat & an awesome dude. I'm still amazed at how much conversation flows with everyone.
Finally, they have all the extras show up for the video's "big scenes" and it was a blast. The director was a little pushy with Thes (Thes and I were like, "Is this dude serious?!?"), but they were on a time crunch to get done by 11, so he just rolled with it. I was way in the back for a lot of the big scene parts because Thes appointed me the "Roll Sound!" Guy (had to use his iPhone to play the track for each shot, then I'd jump up and down, and then rush back to the phone at the end of the track). My legs are wore out today from jumping so much. BUT Thes was cool about getting me nearly front-and-center in one of the last scenes, which was super fun.
Overall, I had a blast, although I didn't eat much food yeasterday and I used a ton of gas getting down there & back (I need a hybrid, y'all). The only thing I really could've done without was the waiting around, but that's show biz, and it was bugging Thes just as much as it was bugging the extras. (Nothing was buggin' Double K, he was chiiiiiill). Just glad to be a part of it!!
Lemme know if you have any questions, as long as they don't have anything to do with video content, haha. I thought the track was fresh, and now I'm looking forward to the album even more.....

Oh, and side note: as I was leaving L.A. & getting on I-5, there was a gigantic car fire on the side of the freeway, the whole front of the car was crazy blazin'... I was just telling a guy on Instagram (one of the other extras I met) that that scared the CRAP out of me and gave me my "this could be you. stay awake, b*tch" moment, so I made it back alright... but barely (I had a minor swerve going as I rolled back into the Sac area).

I am sure the extras that were fans were pretty hyped to be there.Some of the fans seemed crazy awkward, but they let it all go when they had to for the big group scene at the end (sorry for the way that sentence came out... it wasn't a p0rno)... some of the actors seemed really bored too, and i'm not sure they got PUTS, but they got the concept and played it off well, which was what's important. I caught some of the nerdiest dudes checking out the actresses, haha. I was too, tho, so I can't talk much.

Just one question. Was the sound of the track on some next step vibe, as in a progression we haven't heard before? Seeing as how Thes stresses that they try not to make the same type of records, just curious if we're in for a new wave.

as far as new ground goes, it fell pretty comfortably into the PUTS catalog, BUT... I feel like it's a just a touch harder-edged than what I'm used to from PUTS (since they are pretty much the premiere "chill" group, lyrically)... if Public Enemy and PUTS had a kid together, it might sound like what I heard... but I WAS really digging the track... In my opinion, it's also got good crowd-interaction potential, and it'll get people pumpin' their fist.
From what I saw of the video clips recorded earlier in the day, the video will raise the bar for the track, definitely. PUTS has never done a video like this one, not by a long-shot.
That's about as far as I can take it without spoiling things (if I haven't already).
Note: I didn't get a chance to hear the whole track, front-to-back; each scene we shot was pretty much snippets of the track...
