Raiding your record stores, bringing home the funk - and give it to those who can appreciate, the George Clinton on the ????? phase; I feel great. -
Posted 16 years ago #I thought it was "George Clinton on the corn flakes" but if so, I don't get the lingo...

-
Posted 16 years ago #roflcopter is just one of those internet meme/joke type things. spawned from "leet" speak, or something like that
-
Posted 16 years ago #Oops, meant "frosted flakes"... Wasn't listening to the song at the time, going by memory, and I got my cereals confused.
Yeah, I just scraped by before the LOL generation... There was AIM and all that, but none of the lingo was ultrapopular yet... Still, I managed to pick up ROFLMAO and TTYL and all that, so I think I got most of DQMOT on the first pass...

People Under the Stairs ? Check the Vibe
Thes:
Back in the days on the boulevard in Pico,
Before we had status and before there was a people,
You could find Mike and Chris listening to hip hop,
Everyday after school, Martin?s record shop,
Simple, homey don?t you know all things go in cycles?
Cracked out Robert Brown, funeral for Michael,
Money comes and goes in so many different ways,
The days might change but the funky music stays girl,
Ah keeping cuts original with the abstract,
Old school dove tail rocking with the (?????)
It?s all expected. People from the under
Crowned with the thundersound stevie with the wonder
Sunglasses, the girls shake their asses,
Fellows move their butts, party people say ?WHAT?,
If you got a fist throw it up and stay proud,
The people are the reason, gotta play the music loud,
Dub K:
Parsenium(?) you know they check the vibe,
Mandela, you know he checkin the vibe,
Bill Clinton, you know he checks the vibe,
Bart Simpson, you know he checks the vibe,
Spike Lee, you know he checkin the vibe,
Chuck Chillout, you know he checks the vibe,
John Singleton, you know he checks the vibe,
Joe Jackson, you know he checks the vibe,
Dub K:
Well you all know me, it?s your favourite bar hopper,
Lookin for the girls who wanna have fun, like Cindy Lauper,
MCs don?t wanna battle because they know I can?t lose,
Money please, can somebody put some vodka in that orange juice?
I need the beats, before I go to sleep,
Rappers need to step back, or watch their grandmothers weepin,
You know it?s been 10 years since I first got down,
Went from Reebok runners to fresh Nikes on the ground,
I?m getting hungry, so I?m eating my words,
Regurgitating synonyms, nouns and verbs,
So if you need directions, or even need attention,
Here pull up a chair and check this bumping through your speaker.
Check the vibe, we gone check the vibe?
Thes:
You know the deal when the people drop the lingo,
Rhymes are so bumpin that the ladies want the single (?)
Here we are sensation for the nation of the Zulu,
Wait? I think somebody knew dude (?)
Dub K:
We want you to shine, just like Tears for Fears,
Reminisce on the funk, like Fred Savage from the wonder years
Open up your ears and let the brothers do the talking,
While you lovers play the pimps and let the ho?s do the walking,
Walk walk on, walk walk on,
Guaranteed ta, walk walk on,
Walk walk on, walk walk on,
Thes:
Got ta send a shout out to the almighty Zulu Nation,

Busta Rhymes on the bass guitar,
????
Ron Carter ?????
Check the vibe (repeat)
I totally lose it in the last bit where Thes is just chatting away... some kind of violators chat i think. Any ideas?
What a beat this is. Wasn't sure about it at first, but damn it's growing on me like crazy. Every day I have a different favourite tune on this album. The mark of a truly great album I think

I had a dream last night, that that dude (?) Muhammed came through the studio, took out his mixer, Busta Rhymes got a bass guitar,
Bob Power on the mix, Bob Power, Bob Power
Yo, I also wanna send a shout-out to Violator, yeah...
Ron Carter on the bass...
Check the vibe (repeat)

I know a lot of the name drops... like Ron Carter, Busta Rhymes, Bob Power, and Arsenio Hall all figure in ATCQ's works and history, but I don't know exactly why Derek Jeter and Bo Jackson and Cyndi Lauper showed up... not that it's a bad thing... and Violator sounds familiar, I just can't place it right now...
Also, the Bobby Brown/Michael and ...get loose/...orange juice are from "Excursions" and "Phony Rappers", respectively... I heard on that radio show that Thes is into Midnight Marauders and KK likes Low End Theory... I've actually always been into People's Instinctive Travels... myself... and I think Beats Rhymes and Life is WAY underrated... "Jam" is a slick cut, and "Mind Power" and "Get A Hold" are chill as h3ll... -
Posted 16 years ago #Nice Sactown, all those changes make sense for sure. Violater is a record label, Q-Tip and Busta were signed to it at some point.
Love hearing all the ATCQ love from the guys, I'd have to agree with Thes, Marauders is my favorite of their albums. I really need to listen to that interview when I get a chance.
Cheers for the input anyways bud. -
Posted 16 years ago #Ah, that's where I'd heard Violator before... Yeah, Midnight Marauders is dope, fo sho.
I don't know why though, something about the vibe and the craftsmanship just draws me to ATCQ's first album though. It's like they are getting their footing, but they are already established, and so more fun shows through (I mean, just peep "Push It Along" and "Can i Kick It?"). Sort of like all the joking on Leaders of the New School's A Future Without A Past... or The Pharcyde going nuts on Bizaree Ride II...
I mean, I still give mad ups to all the detailed work and the heavy hitting that hip hop groups do later, but when they first drop an album, it's like you can tangibly feel the excitement that they have just to be putting something on wax for the first time... later, they sound like artists in the lab, but that first one is always more rough and the things that "don't sound right" make it sound better... am I making sense? -

yo it's Ali Shaheed Muhammad - 3rd member of ATCQ - anyone??
and, of course, Bussa Bust on bass guitar -
Posted 16 years ago #Haha, yeah I know 'bout Ali Shaheed, but on the track, Thes says something between "that" and "Muhammad", and I can't quite make it out... phonetically, it's like "abood threek"? I guessed at "that dude (?)" but now I don't think that's right.
