That's cool that Carried Away is recorded in the same way as next step too, maybe that's why it's hit such a nerve with me in this day and age of digitised perfection.

It's funny you said Questions is your least favorite album, to me it is actually my favorite and I know a lot of fans who feel that way. The samples you guys used on songs like E-Business are just unbelievable. -

I'm just one person, but man, OST was my soundtrack for the summer of 2002. Used to listen it front to back on the bus to UPS when I worked the midnight shift. Used to recite your verse from "The Breakdown" like it was my own walking down Western Avenue at like 4:30am from the bus stop to my house.
Which beats were made in 1998 for Carried Away?
The song "Carried Away" just has that vibe of being one of the greatest songs. It's like the perfect song to the end of the day. I always listen to it after I get off the train and walk the 2-3 blocks to my place. Thanks for making it. -

Naw, he only meant that Question was his least favorite from a SOUND QUALITY perspective. I'm not just playing kiss-ass here when I say that I think I see what he means. From a song perspective, Thes said he's staying out of the favorites game, because he'll always like the newest sh!t best... Like "Carried Away."
The songs on Question are fresh as hell, but when you listen to the mixes, you can see that the album isn't as clean... Personally, I think Next Step sounds even rougher, but put Mid-City Fiesta next to Youth Explosion and listen to the difference... -

we were discussing how even though the P make tracks that are 'clean' sounding (as in, they don't all have the vintage scratchy vinyl samples running through) we still loved the tracks - now this was waaay back when I was really only listening to hiphop at the 'sample driven' end of the spectrum.
btw, I got into the P by OST, which aside from 4-5 tracks, I think is largely a 'clean' (:roll: sorry can't think of a better word) sounding album.
in terms of new P losing that sampled sound with more recent albums, I would counter that with say... "The Swan Fever" -

Yeah, I cannot believe OST was not well-received. I remember hearing the original played for me by my man Anibal and I could not believe Thes came up with the chop to make the loop sound like it did. That is when I knew Thes was a beast on the beats. I never doubt dude's decision on how to flex a beat. Whether he chooses to loop Baby Peppers' drums or separate the parts, it's all good to me.
Regardless of all this, I was ready for Carried Away. I love the album. I love the small extras. Thes, you better damn drop through Michigan. I swear, man. Don't make me hijack the tour. Come see your folks, man! I want my Colt 45 (beer included)! -

no, it initially only sold a few thousand, but then as time went on it began to gain traction (like a few years later) and now still sells consistently a few units here and there.
It still hasn't broken 50K.
And since we're talking numbers, every year in the last couple of years the music industry has been 50% of what it was before, especially for independent groups like us.
Vinyl 12"'s are down about 1500% - i know this figure sounds ridiculous but it's true. Youth Explosion sold 15,000 units in the first month it was out (because the market was like that) now adays if i say we're going to press up 400 units of a twelve inch, everyone gets nervous because that's a pretty high aspiration for a 12". All this vinyl is making a comeback sh!t is bullshizzle if you know whats really happening in the industry. And the worst part is distributors and retailers don't want to pay me what it costs to press up the record - for instance, with TR@TD, it cost me $1600 out of my pocket to make that record. I paid for it with my credit card. Fat Beats told me they would only pay me $3.75 a unit AND i would have to pay for shipping. That's why Om had to sell them direct, they bailed me out by buying them at cost from me and saved my ass.
Now, all this stuff i'm telling you no one in the industry wants you to know, but i'm telling you because it's your money that has kept us afloat and i respect and appreciate that.
The CD sales are down over 50% across the board from last year when fun dmc came out - al the stores like virgin etc. are gone. no one is buying physical cd's. Om wen tout on a limb with my packaging ideas but damn if someone doesn't start buying the actual cd's this might be our last physical release, because when sales are 50% digital, it doesn't make sense for a label to make cool sh!t for the fans (which is what i'm all about)
bottom line - we need to continue to urge our family and friends to support music and bands they love by buying physical copies of things. It costs less than a meal but it lasts a lifetime. -

I knew CD sales were sh!tty, but damn.
I always buy CDs, it's just cool having an original copy and I like to support the artists to give something back for all the hard work and effort put into their music.
It actually makes me sad, you guys, who always put out for their fans, strugglin so bad.
I guess, it's just the trend or something.
The downfall of a lot of music, people just downloading and the CD sales plummeting as a result, it's a sad, sad, thing.
I can only hope, it doesn't end with Carried Away, cause that would just be a tragic end of an era and musical dinasty.
PUTS army is with you guys though, I'm sure of that.
We'll keep on supporting you, buying CDs, coming to shows, and spreading the word of the musical dope. -

Posts: 488Posted 16 years ago #Dude its really bad. Carried Away debuted #30, number three of the new releases on the billboard rap chart behind Snoop Dogg and Kottonmouth Kings. And let me put it to you like this: two weeks later and there still hasn't been 1000 physical cd's sold. Ouch.
The top google links to Carried Away are all free downloads.
Snoop Dogg selling 4000 units? what world are we living in?
If anything Om gets the props for still trying to keep the physical ship afloat. I'm personally going to FYE today to buy a few copies. Just because. -

I hella didn't even know it was like that right now. I mean, I knew vinyl wasn't making a comeback, and I knew iTunes, etc. were massively biting into CD sales (I've known that since Tower closed down, even the original store in Sacto), but daaaamn...
I might buy a bunch of PUTS CDs (not just Carried Away) and give 'em out as christmas gifts to my homies. -

We've come too far to stop or turn back, so we just need to readjust - unfortunately it's not exactly clear what that readjustment will be. If you guys remember i had asked awhile back how you think we should proceed forward and i took everyone's input and suggestions seriously.
Unfortunately, I have to handle everything here, from the artwork to making the beats to business managing to booking tours to engineering etc. And i'm trying to be the best father i can be but it's getting really tough and overwhelming, especially when met with the disappointment of sales. I feel like - you know when things are going well everyone is willing to take credit for it but when the sh!t hits the fan it's always, "whats going on thes?". So the short answer is i'll figure something out - i'm not going to let this die because the business of this is dying. We've always been music first and business second. So the art will stay. The music will keep coming. We will figure out ways to get the last chapters of this book published.
I've got alot of stuff planned right now that's going to be really awesome, i don't want to let the cat out the bag just yet but trust me, things are going to keep coming. I'm adjusting to sleeping 6 hours a night, which means more time to dedicate to all of this. Om is reworking the marketing plan and i think we can pull this through, they are behind the record and it's not going to go anywhere but up at this point. To be alive and still standing after all of this change is worth it in itself to me.
I really can't tell all of you how much i appreciate and respect your support, criticisms, dedication and passion towards what we've been trying to do.
Ok enough sappy sh!t - LETS ALL HAVE A BEER!
