Deli, it appears you're not alone in feeling the way you do about "OST & before" vs. "Stepfather & after"... maybe you're talking more about production, though, so I'm not singling you out as a hater or anything, but you and this reviewer are both basically still are feeling albums 1, 2, & 3 more.
This reviewer basically said "albums four to six were blander than a Sunday afternoon at Snow Patrol?s house" and gave it a 3/5. (Weak!)
I respectfully disagree with you both about the production values and the level of intensity, and I think I disagree with most people on the forum inasmuch as I don't feel that Question was PUTS's high point. In fact, the later, more matured-sounding albums are more interesting to me...
Anyway, I always seem to be the bearer of bad news/reviews, but everyone keep their heads up. Plenty of people in the PUTS army. I'll keep looking at the reviews... -

I also consider Stay Tuned in the "before" section.
I've been listening a lot to Carried Away the last few days. Yes it's a good album and some songs i feel a bit more then when i first listen to them but i still have a hard time explaining why i don't feel as inspired and suprised as the first 4.
I think the first 4 albums had more breaks. Less shinny hi hats.
See, i don't find the eerie, deep, obscur, eclectic, mysterious, where did you find that record....under the stairs....secret diggin spots, dusty crates samples on the last 3.
One example of a fly sample i got flabbergasted when i listened to it the first time was The Cat. Man the bounce in those drums are sick!! The sample is top notch!
Also the intro from OST got that eerie piano loop and bass man that got me straight in the back of my mind.
Tales Of Kidd Drunkadelic.....dammm!!! That sample is crazy fly. See i mean the melody speaks by itself. It's remeniscing of the good old days.
The Suite for Beaver Part 1....Mannnnnn that bass and voice loop is crazy.
Also what i was talking about using lo pass filters is a good example in The Suite for Beaver Part 1. at 1:21 Thes plays with the filter and you can hear it adds depth to the beat melody. He does that on a lot of different songs in the first albums.
Lo Pass filter effect songs: The Dig, The Suite For Beaver Part 1, Plunken' Em, Yo, Take the Fruit, Youth Explosion, Sterns To Western, Yehaw Partystyles, Earth Travelers....
I think they use less in the new albums.
Anyway that's just a detail.
Also carried away sometimes has those "low rider Cadillac" melodies, like My Boy D, Down in LA and Come On, Let's Get High.
I mean, it sounds more West. Before the first 4 albums sounded more center and East.
Now its a bit more West sounding.
The melody on the first verse of Thes One on Check The Vibe is better than the one on Double K's verse.
It's all about taste and opinions. -

Word.
I completely respect where you're coming from, and actually, after writing that last bit you just posted, I can see your point of view a lot more.
I'm just one of those people (like I said a few posts back) that is willing to go really far with an artist and let them stretch my mind a bit. It comes down to less of "what I find appealing" and more about "what they are willing to show me".
I completely agree with you about how the sounds of the beats and breaks draw me in initially, but take Stepfather. The first time I listened to a lot of the songs on there, I wasn't that taken by them (maybe like a 3.5/5 star review). But when I kicked back and chilled and listened to them, they drew me in (and became a 4.5/5).
Fun DMC was a better listen first time around, but my respect for the album didn't deepen as much as my respect for Stepfather did (but I hold both albums in roughly the same regard now). Question was the same way: GOOD first listen, but I didn't get that much more into it on repeated listens. Of all the albums, Next Step was actually my LEAST favorite upon first listen, I think, and even that one has some dope tracks that managed to up my feelings about it.
I hope that wasn't too confusing. Carried Away struck me like a thunderbolt (basically, like O.S.T. struck me), and I haven't calmed down yet, so I can't really give an objective view at this point.

Posted 17 years ago #It's amazing to me some people can't respect or appreciate the P's body of work.
if anything yall should cleanse that musical palate, stop getting stuck on that 90's sound and respect good hip-hop rather than look for even the slightest brushstroke that seems off.
West coast...East coast...i could care less.

Not to get too redundant, but honestly, I could quote this 10 more times on this thread and it still wouldn't be enough. I was slowly getting there, but you put it more succinctly than I think I'm capable of. With my essay-writin'-ass.

He's a bad writer. Plus if the only good hip-hop by his standards are "bangers", then I think he should just cop that new Weezy mixtape. -
Posted 17 years ago #Thats real messed up reading about the sales statistics Thes. I've got doubles of each one of your records up to Stepfather and have bought each album on CD and I definetely thought that people in the US, especially the so called fans would be copping like I do (at least one copy of each CD if they aint spinning). I mean I found Carried Away no problem at a local CD store out here on the far side of Canada and figured if it could get there it would be at a lot of stores in the US in the physical form.. Not breaking a thousand after the first week is f***ed up... I want to harpoon many people in the music industry right now... especially after I turned on my internet and the first thing I see on the homepage is a link to a video with little wayne drake and some other fags who seem to "dominate" the rap game right now. it really is depressing and possibly more so that people won't go to the store no more to buy sh!t. I'm only 21 and I'm feeling like grandpa here going to the CD store. Carried Away is dope and it deserves more sales fact...

7 albums, numerous shows, traveling the world, fame [albeit: minimal], yes CD sales may be down but anyone of us can go to Itunes and purchase PUTS music.
If anything this digital era has allowed people from all over the world to hear the P. Instead of us buying 5 more CD's let's instead tell 5 people about PUTS this week and maybe even let them borrow a CD.
Thes, yes you may not be selling all the CD's you may like, but record labels are still willing to publish your music, your shows are selling out, you have seen parts of the world that most of us here wont ever see. I don't see how all this can be financially hurting you. I will share with you one of my favorite quotes:
My experience indicates that most people who've accumulated a great deal of wealth haven't had that as their goal at all. Wealth is only a by-product, not the original motivation.

P.S. We won't ever see the 10 yr anniversary footage will we?
