I LOVE early Beatnuts and I know the P grew up on that sh!t so I was super pleased about 80 blocks from Silverlake! Nice to hear the P shout out to them.
If anybody out there doesn't have Intoxicated Demons and Street Level, you are seriously missing out. It's safe to say that, if you love the P, these two albums are the shiz.
Just wanted to put that out there.

Still trying to find a good copy of Intoxicated Demons, but Street Level is one of the best hip hop albums I've heard, "Hit Me With That" is incredible. -

Posts: 265Posted 16 years ago #I meant to start a topic a while back about whether or not the Beatnuts were a big influence on PUTS, given that they're sampled on a few tracks..
The first EP & LP are classic material and the production features some of the best hip hop ever. Further production for Chi Ali (forget about the kiddie rapping - the LP is bananas), Kurious etc should also be checked out (the Kurious LP in particular is a killer). -

My fav tune is definitely "let off a few", tiny song (1:43) on street level. Such a dope beat...

Funniest thing is that I'm so out of the radio rap and diva trash that I never even know when this shi*t happens... every now and then, my girl listens to Beyonce or some sh*t, but I don't think she likes J-Lo... so she sampled "Watch Out Now", huh? That's more than weak. What's next? No Escapin This for Rihanna?

In case no one's ever heard of this sort of thing happening before: one of the tracks the JBs did was "Soul Power '74" (an instrumental re-working of James Brown's track)... well, the Average White Band put out a hit track called "Pick Up The Pieces" shortly afterward, and the JB's looked upon it as a total rip-off (especially since the AWB's track was such a hit), and they were pissed... so they released a super souped-up track called "Pick Up The Pieces One By One" in 1975 and called themselves the Above Average Black Band (or A.A.B.B.) with strings and everything.
Didn't really show up AWB like they thought it would, but still makes for a funny story... -

"Let Off A Couple" you mean? Classic sample. Same tune as "Hit Me With That" and Apache's "Gangsta Bitch".
If you don't own the LP that tune comes from, get digging right now.

Really?!? Can't say I can really hear a huge similarity between Soul Power and Pick Up the Pieces. At least not enopugh of a similarity to cause a beef... -
