Posts: 3,255Posted 16 years ago #I've played piano since I was 5, but I'm more in the jazz and "pop" styling... I can't do that classical stuff (so basically, no prodigy)... I sight read and and can play by ear, and I USED to have near-perfect pitch, but I've lost it recently... as a reference: I learned most of Nujabes' piano lines in a few hours. I own a Roland digi-piano with mahogany veneer (got it hella cheap... floor model, y'all)
I can also play guitar/bass (I own my own guitar), but I'm not as good at those, no callouses on my fingers or anything. The mechanics come easy, the virtuosoness, not so much.
I've messed with drums and theremins before too. I drum on everything and can juggle complex beats pretty well, but I haven't actually been able to spend any significant time at a drum kit. -

Posts: 3,255Posted 16 years ago #I'm also a singer (if we're counting voice as an instrument). Sang my own songs and played piano in Sacramento coffeehouses for a few years.
Also, I was a baritone/bass in a UC Davis gospel choir for a while (wanted a music minor, and it was the only choir/band I could get into without a big ol' audition). They always made me the ultra deep bass part 'cause I was the only one who get that low.

Posts: 163Posted 16 years ago #I've been playing guitar for about 15 years. I still suck, but I've got a nice Ovation Elite Standard I've had for nearly the same amount of time. Props to getting out an playing Sac, it's always been something I've wanted to do, but never had the balls or skills to do it. I've written a couple songs, but nothing to be too proud of. My wife seems to like 'em though. However, she most likely pretty biased. Sac, also jealous of the perfect pitch, my Dad used to give me crap in high school about locking my self in my bedroom to play and sing off key.
I also tried my hand at piano and saxaphone when i was in grade school, but I guess they didn't stick. guitar is it for me. -

don't worry about not sticking with piano. there are legions of kids from the 80's/90's whose parents made them take lessons but didn't follow through, and guitar is more entertaining, in my opinion. saxophone would be tight, but be proud of your guitar. that's some good sh*t.

Posts: 3,255Posted 16 years ago #actually, the only public performance i did with a guitar was to get up in front of my children's lit class and sing a song i made up about monsters under the bed. i won the "contest" (the competition wasn't all that stiff... i think the runner-up was a woman who juggled and told a story simultaneously...), and the prize? my lit professor's album (on cassette tape) that he released of him doing beat poetry in berkeley in the 80's. oh boy. -

Man, thats a funny story. I'm still laughing, and glad you didn't come in 2nd to the "woman who juggled and told a story simultaneously". Also, sweet prize too. Priceless. I do wish i would have stuck with the sax, that would have been pretty sweet. -

The theremin is a crazy instrument man. I just learned about them in my humanities class and I have no idea how you could control a melody on one of them things. I'd like to learn though, lol. -

The loop out of the side controlled the volume (when you had you hand close to it, there would be no sound, but when you took it away, it would get louder). The tube that went straight up controlled the pitch (the closer your hand got, the higher the pitch). It's fun; you're making 60's B-movie horror soundtracks in no time at all. -

Posts: 1,415Posted 16 years ago #When I was at Primary school (ages 4 - 11) we got a letter to take home reference recorder lessons... my mate thru his in the bin and to be cool so did I lol... My parents found out and made me do the lessons hahaha.
I was rubbish, tone def.
I had acoustic guitar lessons at secondary school (ages 11 - 16) for a whole term I think, but I wasnt very good. I seem to learn things differently to everyone else.
The only instrument I play these days is the turntables. Been playing for I think 7-8 years. Mixing, scratching, cutting, juggling and generally moaning that the art of djing is getting lost.
Vinyl junkie and if I'm out with mates and the dj is wack playing on cd/mp3 etc I bitch. So much so that my mates who dont dj can tell a sh!t mix and and a sh!t dj etc.
