okay, im a lil bit baked and i dunno if this will catch on but, my idea is,a thread were wen uve had a few too many you can come and chat sh!t basically... ill start with the typical question so u get an idea of what im on about....
what is the meaning of life? lol, or more specifically what does life mean to you? is life all about providing for ur kids r grandkids? maybe its exploring this world? maybe jus gettin thru life as best you can enjoyin yourself? or maybe its playin world of warcraft?
for me, life is about enjoying it as best you can. i know u cant have fun all the time, n sumtimes u gotta get serious like if u got kids n stuff. but where i can, i jus enjoy myself. b that down the pub having a quiete pint or working a 24hr shift. u jus gotta enjoy those little moments, for example, i got stuck in traffic in the snow last week (3hrs on a 10minute stretch of road btw) and i look round, n people r stressed out, on there phones, kids screaming and i look to my right and theres this old geezer, turned his engine off, gets a paper and his pipe out and jus chills, no stress no wurries. i dunno why, but it jus made me smile. like he realises theres no point gettin stressed out. lol.
anway. enough babbling from me, u get the point, lets get some intresting (if slightly odd) questions on the go.

Posts: 537Posted 16 years ago #Meaning? I claim life has no objective meaning. We are all just aggregations of cells that have, over a geological time scale, developed sufficient intelligence to create civilization, cars, guns, atomic bombs, poems, paintings, computers, and this forum.
When one asks of an ultimate 'meaning' of life, I feel that is irrelevant. Biologically, the meaning of your existence is to pass on your genetic material and die. Sounds quite morbid when put like that.
With that said, in the end, it is YOU who ultimately define the meaning of your existence. YOU give it meaning. There is no third party who hands out "meanings" to everyone's lives. The world is so broad and beautiful, and we, as humans, are so lucky to have the capabilities we have (intelligence and all), it would be a shame to sit and waste it.
Go out and live, enjoy life to the fullest. I don't know about that "re-incarnation" business, but to the best of my knowledge, I have this one life on Earth, and i'm not about to waste a second of it! Read, learn, listen to music, go out and mountain bike, find a passion, meet new people, hook up with a lady, do something stupid, take a chance, make a mistake, and don't live life with regret. At the end of the day, you wanna look back at your life and say, "damn, that was nice."

If the big bang happened due to a massive build up of Hydrogen (H) and Helium (He) which got so hot it created the heaviest elements skip awhile and then planets formed etc etc.
Then where did all this Hydrogen and Helium come from?!
If the H and He got so hot was this due to H and He compressing then the big bang happened which was the H and He expanding along with the other elements which they created.
And this compressing and expanding could be happening like "click" but obviously we're so small and time and everything is relative.
Also has Extra Terrestrial life exsisted and died in the Billions of years Earth has taken to evolve to sustain us?!

The Big Bang thing has never sat right with me. I know I'm a scientist and I'm supposed to respect all the theories, but I think that, regardless of whether there WAS a Bang or not, I'm just a believer in the infinite. No "first causes", no "beginnings", no "apocalypse" (on a universal scale), etc. I just feel like possibility supercedes the limits of the mind, and if the possibility exists, the thing itself exists. So whatever we envision the universe to look like, there will be something existing outside of that.
Maybe there was a time when only energy existed, maybe there was a Big Bang... maybe there was a larger being (that is/is not aware of us) that actually created us (on purpose/by accident), but that larger being was probably created by an even larger being... I just have a hard time wrapping my head around limits because there is so much out there that we don't know about.
So yeah, infinite universes stretching infinitely, infinite dimensions, infinite SactownConnections, infinite pizza parlors, a world that exactly mirrors Middle Earth out there somewhere, infinite P.U.T.S.es making infinite beats with infinite permutations... it's lovely, ain't it. In fact, maybe dreams are a connection to all that... who knows. -

What do your enemies (or people that extremely dislike you, or people that have done wrong to you, etc.) deserve from you? Should you supply them with honor? rights? respect? love? nothing? Is it ever okay to treat them savagely at the expense of letting your own hatred control you? Should you really get to know everything about your enemies?
Is it "an eye for an eye" or do you just "turn the other cheek"? Is vengeance or payback warranted?
If a community contains a large sect of overagressive and violent people (violent in thought or action), is it okay to stereotype them all into the same group? (I'm not just talking about muslims... I'm also talking about American Christians and conservatives) -

ive never really questioned the big-bang theory, but now u mention how did the bang start u got me really thinking bou how little we know? i mean, i dont think we as a race are ready to comprehend just what infinity or endless really means? someone says space is endless you jus sorta ignore it and agree, but it really is endless, there could be (and im sure the probability of it is on my side) people talkin on a martians under the stairs forum or summat. lol.
as for your question on stereotyping ive always held the belief that you should base your opinion on someone once you have met them, not because a group of people all say the same. i think i wouldnt want to be judgd because of the people around me and neither would they. Saying that, sometimes the statistics are not on their side, for example, "the majority of single mothers grew up in an area of high unemployment... -

But I still catch myself every now and then. Not with races anymore, but with Republicans, conservatives, etc. I guess I really hate the ideals that some of those guys strive for, and it just makes me start to foam at the mouth or something. So yeah, I wanna rip that piece of myself out, but I just want some other views on it... -

this question required a bit more thought, basically because it depends on the natue of the crimes, you cant put petty robbery and murder in the same class. I think that most criminals deserve a 2nd chance, they should try to be rehabilitated and we as a society should support that, and i as a person do try to give second chances to people if they deserve it.
HOWEVER: what if the crime is 1 of the top 3 most vile crimes in the world (rape, murder or child abuse) do they deserve a 2nd chance? i feel strong enough to say the death penalty is not enough for them, but then, why would i be any better for killing them (it would be legal murder). can we learn from these people? i dont belive they deserve any respect but maybe some compassion? i mean, there maybe some contributing factors as to why they are like they are, abused as a child for example.
i dunno really, anyone else got an opinion or idea on this?

Isaac Newton (you might remember him for his laws of motion) believed in an infinite (existed forever) static universe filled with a uniform scattering of stars/planets/galaxies. He believed that if the distribution of matter did not extend forever, then it would collapse inward due to its own gravity.
However, let me ask you this question y'all. If the universe is filled with an infinite number of stars, why is the sky dark at night? A German physicist, Olbers, argued that if we live in an infinite universe, then in ANY direction you look in the night sky, your line of sight will fall on the surface of a star. Most people say "there is stuff blocking the way.." However, in an infinite universe, the dust blocking the way will eventually be heated up by the starlight until it glowed as brightly as the stellar surface.
The solution to this apparent paradox is that the universe in not infinite, and has existed for a finite amount of time. The universe is simply too young to be filled with light. (Light has a finite speed, namely c = 2.98 * 10^8 m/s) -

The answer your first question...it's a bit interesting actually.
The current data, taken over the last couple decades, has confirmed the fact that the universe is expanding. That means every point is getting further from every other point.
But that's not the mindf*ck. The expansion is accelerating(!). That means the rate at which the universe is expanding is getting faster and faster! (We still dont know exactly how, there are a bazillion questions we havent answered about this, like: 'What is causing the expansion, what is the universe expanding into, etc')
That means though, eventually, the sky will be completely pitch black. The universe will be expanding so fast, that light well be SO redshifted by the time it gets to Earth, it will be blackness.
P.S. Redshift - Its like when a firetruck passes by, the sound goes "wee woo WEE WOO WEE WOOO!!!! WEE WOo weeeeee wooooo" The pitch of the sound is higher when its coming toward you, and lower when its going away from you. Its like that with the light, the galaxies will be moving away from you, so the frequency is lowered, and with light, the frequency represents the color. It will be so low, that you wouldn't be able to see it at all. [/i]
