YO! So I've seen the P twice, both in Eugene, OR. The first was the Highlighter tour and the second was in May for the 12SP tour. Both times they performed at really intimate venues so both times I had the very special opportunity to meet them, take some pics, got them to sign some stuff and thank them for the best hip hop there is. The first time was the better experience, but I first wanna talk about the most recent experience during the 12SP tour.
This is a very long post but I hope you read it all and enjoy it.
So I showed up to the show two hours before it started since it was at a small little pizza place, all the while hoping to have them sign my 12SP vinyl, ask them about a few samples and inspiration for samples (mainly Back to the Future) and of course buy them a drink. Like typical P, they were humble and friendly and did me some solids and signed my vinyl and took some pics. I said I would buy them both drinks, but Thes respectfully declined since he said he gets free drinks from the venues they perform at, so I get it. I was also wearing my PUTS record shirt and Thes said "nice shirt homie!" so know I'm a homie I guess haha. I then asked Thes about what his favorite beer is as well as what local brew he was wearing, and he said he likes too many (as evidenced in Beer) and he was drinking a local Eugene brew. I then asked him whether he knew of this cool beer app called Untappd, he said he hadn't so he downloaded right there. However I still haven't found him on there, so I take it he's still just enjoying the brew like he always does and isn't worried about tracking it and sh!t. I then asked Double K about the Back to the Future samples in Ste for Reefer and he said that was his favorite movie back in the day, he watched it a few times a week, so that was nice to hear since Back to the Future is one of my fav movies too. The show was incredible, as usual, and one special thing to note was when they performed Pictures On My Wall, they stopped before the Rob Ford dance so Thes could introduce it. I was the only one in the crowd of 250 that knew the dance already, having listened to the song tons of times and even looked up the video of Rob Ford dancing in parliament so I could get it down for the show, so as soon as Thes explained the dance I busted the moves and Thes gave me shout out by saying "this goofy mother fucker knows it so do what he's doing!" That was tite and we each got a chuckle out of it. After the show, I went up to Double K to try to smoke with him (having done so before my first time, explained later, so I knew it was a good possibility), and sure enough he told me to follow him outside after he got himself a Long Island, so right outside the venue on a regular city street we shared a joint. This time there was a group of about seven people, so we were just chatting about the show, Eugene, ladies, and Double K was commenting on the fact that now at shows the P has to make sure they perform a lil bit of everything since they got 9 albums already! He gave me props after the doobie and we each went on our way, and I had to thank him extensively for all the great music, letting me smoke him out and for just being a homie!!
The first time during the Highlighter tour in Oct 2011 at an even smaller venue in Eugene was the best experience I've ever had. I was very upset tho because PUTS opened for Mac Miller when there's no f***ing way EVER that should be the case. It should always be the other way around! Anyway, earlier that day Thes was a guest speaker for my history of hip hop class, during which I gained an insane amount of knowledge about all things PUTS and hip hop and such (the interview is transcribed here: http://www.thepointoftherhyme.com/UOlecture.htm much respect Sactown Connection for the dopest site!) and after the lecture I took a pic with him and asked if I it was possible to smoke him and Double out after the show and he responded "yeah man come find us after the show!" so I had high hopes. Sure enough, it worked. Right after they finished their set, I went to the parking lot of the venue (this place doesn't even have a green room, the performers prepare and chill out outside) hoping to find the P, and Double was chillin right there. Thes was nowhere to be found (prob working the merch table) but I went straight to Double K, nervous as hell since I've been a fan for years but this was the first time I saw them as well as tried to smoke with a musician, and asked him if a way to say thank you for everything was to smoke him out with a blunt, and he responded "as long as I can light it!" I wouldn't have wanted it any other way!! It was just me, him, and someone who I took to be the P's manager or something of the sort. After a few puffs, he asked "man I'm smoking your weed and I dont even know your name! What your name dawg?!" I told him my name (Desmond) and he said nice to meet you and all that sh!t. We were smoking for a good 15/20 minutes, me just in awe and letting Double do his thang. I can't remember any specific stories but I know he was talking about how weird Prince was and how much he likes him haha. The only thing I asked him, since it's one of fav tracks, was his inspiration for Creepshow and why he wrote, and he responded in perfect creepy fashion: hit the blunt, shrugged his shoulders and simply said "cuz I'm creepy!" hell yeah.
Well I know this was a f*** ton to read, and if you made it this far, respect and thanks. Hopefully you enjoyed my experiences with the P and have similar ones yourselves.
Forever the P!
Peace
