Posts: 19Posted 12 years ago #Saw them at the catalyst in Santa Cruz. This was my second and best concert by far. Highlights included a mini mosh pit, ACDC Cover by thes, drum pad freestyle, and someone handing a j to double which caused everyone to completely smoked out venue.
Bought as much merch as I could and got all my albums signed.

Posts: 190Posted 12 years ago #I promised that I was going to provide you guys with a review of the show for NYC. I was actually at both shows for both Manhattan and Brooklyn. I was also at a small LP record store where Double K was spinning some funky tracks and Thes was speaking to the ones in working at the store and Culturama (Don't know his full name but hes the booking agent that set this up, Thanks Homie!) I will remind you that it might be rather lengthy ,but bare with me because this will be an interesting read. I will make this as enjoyable as I possibly could. Unfortunately, it won't be to the caliber of Sactown's..
I tried providing some images for you guys but I had a hard time uploading pictures through this forum. If one of you could be so kind as to show me how to do that. It would be really nice.
Alright so lets go on with the review. I'm gonna skip ahead towards the end and mention to yall that the P wanted to say hello to all the forum cats and a shoutout to Sactown. Double K told me that he hasn't been lurking the forums since when Highlighter first came out. Hes gonna check it out most likely when hes done touring.
So I brought my cousin and my brother to the show. This was their very first hip-hop show ever and it was quite the privilege of taking them to see the P. They did not know what they were in store! As we were waiting we see Double K walking past us and I shouted out "Hey look its Double K!". I gave him a pound (nyc slang for a handshake). In my mind I kinda made him feel like a star not sure if it was bad but he was diggin it. Afterwards, we see them set up the merch table. My brother proceeds and is in a little awe so he kinda stutters a bit because its his first time meeting them. He then pulls out a couple CDs we had for them to sign. He then pulls out a CD (beat tape in 90s terms) and tells Thes his appreciation and that he is not looking for no record deal but just his feedbacks and thoughts. He wants to be a producer for beats one day. After the P starts signing and taking pictures Thes steps out for a little. I then start to talk with Double K and he shouts out "Are you the dude from IG"? I all of a sudden bring up a big smile like "Hell Yeah!". I proceeded talking about some personal stuff I have been going through breakups,family, etc. It was a real bro moment man. It gets even more interesting when I pull out my phone and ask him about the It ain't getting better! But I got more than one thing on my head that appeared on the forum recently about a VERY rare cassette tape. He mentioned "I got it lying around somewhere, how yall managed to find this?" We just start laughing. Thes comes back and we start talking for a few and how different it has been since they came here in 1998 and how there are younger audiences that it once was. I also mention that I want to eventually create a PUTS inspired flash game (are any of you down?) Double mentions that I should visit LA and come to one of their shows. Basically, when I come around I should let him know. (In no way I am trying to breed jealousy, I just like being personal with people). Theres was a point where Thes was kinda looking around a lot wondering why I was there for too long. I guess he was doing his business so it kinda meant I should step aside and let him do his thing in the merch table. And then the show starts.......
I was really impressed with the line up of the show. There were three groups or rather MCs that were performing Fresh Daily, CJ Fly (from a group called Pro Era that contains Joey Bada$$, who is one the young rappers killing it on the East Coast) and MFN Exquire otherwise known as Muthafuckin Exquire. :
The first MC, Fresh Daily, was really smooth. I really enjoyed their music. It really took me back to when hip hop sounded like ATCQ and De La Soul except it was one MC rocking the ric. Think of it kinda like a mix between soul and jazz with a modern hip hop twist. You can check him out on his website http://freshdailymc.com/.
The second MC, CJ Fly, was a very technical and mellow cat that had a N.W.A. vibe. He made you feel like you wanted to go against authority in NYC. He comprised more skill and shotgun bars than melody which is cool too. It shows the different approaches people have in the hip-hop game. The third and last group was MFN Exquire. They came off a bit taunty and their lyrics were kinda brash. But nothing against them its just their style. People still seemed to dig it because of the shocking lyrics. I thought they were funny and witty. I still managed to nod my head a few time and repeat their lyrics. They had an El-P and R.A. the Rugged Man flow. And plus they are from Brooklyn as well. Check em out! https://www.youtube.com/user/eXqomaniaRulez.
You guys pretty much know the song line up for the show. They added about two songs from 12SP which are " 1 Up To the Sun UP" and "Get Hip". But heres some interesting stuff that happened during the show.
-Thes said this has been the third "official show" in over some time. They have not considered NYC to have a strong following when they first played here in the late 90s to early 00s.
-During the intro of the show where Zelda is shown on the screen (really cool moment of the show) Thes makes some funny jokes like "Its dangerous out in New York City, Going down to get a slice and its the hudson river".
-A really cute girl with a red jersey that is worded "Supreme Bitch" was yelling all over the mic.
-A cool freestyle with appreciation for NYC and how PUTS loves us ( We Love Yall Too!)
-He dedicated the "Rob Ford" dance to my brother .."The one with the Los Santos Tee Shirt this is for you!"After the show, I gave props to Culturama and proceeded to talk to Double K and took pictures with the P. I told them that they rocked it and I will see them tomorrow at the turntable record store......
I headed to the record store and asked the manager when PUTS was coming through and they mentioned the time. I talked to a few crate diggers and employees. Im surprised I don't have a vinyl player or the album on vinyl. Sorry yall. Im gonna get on that soon!
I looked around and the P finally came they greeted me and I smiled and said wassup Mike and Chris. I talked about how exhausted I was from the show last night. I showed them a clip from last nights show which made almost everyone in the store laugh was when I yelled AWWW SHIITTT. I will just tell you that it didnt sound normal. I will put it up on instagram it had the P chuckling.
The best part was when I talked to Double K for a few moments before and after he was spinning. It was really a nice moment for me. Thes One was outside just talking it kinda felt like they were locals at one point not trying to sound like a nerdy fan boy but that essence of hip-hop is really lost nowadays. But what really got to me was when I knew I didnt have enough to go to the second show. I pulled out my wallet and all I had was a $10 bill and a metrocard to get home for the two days. Mind you I am a poor college student with pocket change from a temp job. Then Double proceeds and says "I got you man I will put you on the guest list"...I'm just like in shock. The fact KK would let me in to see them the very next day made me feel good. Mike if you are reading this I just wanted to say thank you!!! They were heading to their car and I told them I will see them tomorrow at the show.So the next day I tried hitting up every friend I knew that I could bring to the show. However, one of them was being lazy and the others had girlfriends with compromises. *psh* #singlelife huh....
I ended up being the only one which I was okay with but for the purposes of having more fans I wanted to. So anyway I head there and I see one at the check in and I tell my name is on the guest list. He doesn't recall so KK comes out and says,..."He's with us". I then proceed to the merch table. As soon as I do I spot Thes at the merch doing his thing. I talked for a bit briefly and I mention not to rush on Wonderful Radio since hes so busy. I would understand. He leaves to the back to handle some business and me and KK talk. I mention that I appreciate what he has done to let me in. We also spoke about what we grew up listening and the guts my brother had for giving Thes his CD. One cool thing similar to that story was that when the P first started they gave their tape/CD to "Xzibit" who was popular at the time (98-00). Regardless or not if my brother makes it he really wont forget that moment cuz he gave it into the hands of someone he is inspired by.So the show starts and its basically the same MCs/groups as the other show except CJ Fly was not rapping on stage.
There a couple things that were a bit different in this show than the previous one was that:
-There was this really jumpy hyper dude that jumped literally everywhere it was quite funny. He was moving around jumping from the left crowd to the right crowd. Kind trippy. Looked like something from the "Mask"
-There was a pale caucasian male with a bandanna that looked insanely high. Kinda like someone from the band "Stealers Wheel"
-One of the girls to my right spilled beer and the bottle ricocheted off the wall right in front of me. Thankfully it didnt hit me and she was nice girl and kinda cute with girly glasses on
-One dude was shouting so many remarks that the P kept laughing despite getting interrupted a few times.
-Everything smelled like funky and danky weed and all the hipster looking fashionistas made it look like it was a modern Woodstock 69' hip hop concert. #foolishpeopleSo the show ended and went the merch table again and I see the Fresh Daily MC. I gave him a pound and he talked. I really wished I had copped his LP or CD. Sorry man.
I just remembered that I couldnt buy anything at the last merch table so all I could have gotten was the "10th Anniversary Set at El Rey" So I didnt get the tour shirt. Damn
I at least felt that I supported them somehow because I never had the chance to buy something at the merch table I really wished I would have bought the Piecelock70 hats two years ago.I forgot to mention that during my conversation with KK he told me that Taraji P Henson listens to the P and I was mindblown by it when I peeped it. A little later we talked about his solo project and how sometimes you just have to be really critical about solo projects because after all it is a reflection of you and your work.I told Thes that I appreciate him rocking the house. I waited a little while to try and have a couple beers at the bar. But the security guard hassled me asking what I was waiting for and I just saying that I am just waiting till everything shuts down. I just left because he became an annoyance.

I know what you mean about Thes wanting to get down to business. Double K's pretty much good times and chillin' out, but Thes needs to handle things sometimes, so usually, I just kinda relax, take some time for the show, and then come back every now and then to just kinda check in with that cats... feel 'em out, and if they're chattin', then we chat... if Thes has got that business look (or it's gettin' closer to showtime, I just kinda hang out and groove on the band that's playing or talk to random people in the audience.
If you're aren't collecting vinyl now, you gotta play some serious catch up later! All of us on the forum ain't playin'... we gotta jump this fool in. (Juss playin.

It would be cool to check out a show you guys are at in CA. See how the vibe is over there. Wouldnt that be cool?

Posts: 36Posted 12 years ago #Amazing set in Boston @ Church last Saturday. Livest crowd I've seen (Beer and Montego Slay were awesome as always,) a lot of songs I hadn't seen them perform (aside from 12SP) despite it being my 4th time seeing them. Stuff like We'll Be There, Youth Explosion, You. Did a fan request for the encore, which was Time To Rock Our sh!t, great stuff. Thes was playing with a soundboard during The Double K Show, and started playing it on his chin, and then on my brother's head (he has a distinctive crest that Thes had an appreciation for, lol.)
Opening acts were some of the worst I've seen, just some really brutal stuff, particularly this one guy named Danny Danger. Worse yet, the promoter (Leedz Edutainment) didn't start with the three vocal acts until like 9:45, so PUTS didn't take the stage until a bit after 11. Took a while for the sound to be hooked up right, so Thes spent some time doing a quick freestyle as well as a Q&A session, during which I greatly embarrassed myself by asking when "Wonderful Music" was coming out. The response: "wonderful music isn't coming out, but Wonderful Radio will be." Oof. Thes, if you read this, my apologies for that one. I'm kind of an idiot.
If there was any disappointment it was that they were entirely out of merch for the show, being the second to last show on the tour; really wanted a WRLA shirt, hope they decide to put some of that stuff on PL70 later. Anyways, probably the best show I've been to, they really brought it that night.

The way they treat their fans really is a testament to the way they approach hip hop and, I'd say, life in general. Down to earth cats that will never forget the everyday people that lift them up, appreciating all that has happened without letting it dilute their drive and ambition...

Props to all you guys posting your thoughts, interpretations, and observations as 12 Step Program Tour members! It gives the rest of us a small glimpse of the energy and vibe that resides in each and every PUTS show, with each one subtly unique in its own way...
And Kurt don't feel too bad about the Wonderful "Music" gaff, Thes obviously knows what you meant and also knows that only a hardcore fan would have that sh!t on their radar!
I've had my fair share of miss-worded questions directed at Thes/KK, mainly because the fanboy in me takes over and all my thoughts either cease to flow or they rush right past me all at once! Cool thing is Mike & Chris are so chill they still make you feel like you didn't geek too hard...

Posts: 300Posted 12 years ago #Anyone know about the (supposed) 7/20 show in SF? I was hoping that sh!t would get worked out at The Chapel (I was just there for King Khan & The Shrines - Great show, great venue), but apparently I gotta go to sactown for the 7/21 show instead.
