Posted 16 years ago #Anyone here a vegan or vegetarian?
What are your thoughts on veganism and vegetarianism?
I've been on a vegan diet for awhile now and don't feel hard done by at all.
I was toying with the idea, then the Boogie Down Productions song 'Beef' won me over.
While i have my own reasons for being vegan the fact that alot of my favourite rappers are vegan or vegetarian encourages me eg-KRS ONE, RZA, Method Man, Redman, Masta Killa, Common, Tajai, Pep Love, Mos Def, Dead Prez. Im sure theres more. -
Posted 16 years ago #Man, I say each to their own, as long as it's healthy... I've been thinking about ditching meat for awhile actually, if only for the reason it's so f*cking expensive... But i love my meat (fnar fnar), and really I can't see not eating chicken and fish and pork and sh!t... Although I do hate agribusiness intensive farming, and the atrocities it produces...
One thing though, I'm trying to put on weight at the moment, going to the gym and sh!t alot, doing a lot of karate, eating lots of protein... wouldn't doing this be a problem if I was veggy or vegan?
Plus what's the deal with veganism? I've heard so many different interpretations of it, I don't really know what it is any more... -
Posted 16 years ago #i wouldnt mind giving up meat for awhile...but i do love me some meat
-
Posted 16 years ago #Love me some meat too, don't think I would ever be able to give it up.
A nice steak, and I'm a happy man. -
Posted 16 years ago #Yo dodo im trying to put on weight too. Just because you give up meat doesnt mean you'll become thin. Quote from the RZA "An Ox is strong as a mothafucka, and all he eats is grass". True to that.
Also there are plenty of athletes out there that are vegan or vegetarian, and plenty of bodybuilders too, just look it up. Also check out veganbodybuilding.com Granted it takes alot of time adjusting to a new routine but in my opinion its very worth it. Let me make it clear I have absolutely nothing against meat eaters and don't want to sound preachy in the slightest.
Check out this video. It kinda makes me sick.
Also one more point, I wouldn't say I'm anti eating meat. I would say I'm very anti corporate farming. I think organic and free range food is the way to go because then you know the animal has been kept in good conditions and are at least exposed to sunlight and killed ethically. -
Posted 16 years ago #In the immortal words of southpark "If you become a vegetarian you turn into a big gay vagina...." lmao, nah im kidding.
My granfather was a farmer and as such, his quality levels for food were passed to my mum and as such to me. I really do enjoy meat, but it has to be something nice and a good cut, im not a fan of sausages due to the quality of cuts used, im not a fan of fast food meat as its usually processed and tastes like crap.
Im fine with a nice steak but i like some veggies on the side, also much love for a sunday roast, prime leg of lamb with all the trimmings. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. especially wen u hungover. lol.
my sister wont eat meat though and to begin with she was ill because she didnt get the nutrients from anywhere alse but once she figured out what to eat etc, she lost weight and is healthier for it. i got nothing against vegitarians, as long as you dont say im a "animal" or "backwards" for eating meat, also, dont say im cruel to animals, coz i love all animals, its jus some happen to be tasty.

Posted 16 years ago #Personally I am a Carnivore, but have a lil sister that is vegan. To each his/her own like dodo said. My wife & I won't buy meat, eggs, etc. unless it is free-ranging & hormone free. On the fish tip, I won't touch it unless I know it is from the wild & to which part of the world it is from. The price is a lot more expensive than the alternatives, but I feel that it is 100% worth it for the quality/taste difference. We def don't eat meat often though, due to the high prices associated with it. I say if you can grow it, go for it!
But I have a question for the vegans/vegitarians that feel that they do so beacause they don't like the thought of "killing" animals...
Do you ever feel guilty for eating living plants...? Non-judgemental question, but I have to ask. I grow a garden & love trees... They all live, produce energy, etc. So is there a direct correlation between the two, meat & plants? Do we associate ourselves, as humans, with animals because they are closer to us in biology? Do we feel sympathy for animals because they can cry & "tell" us their discomforts? What if plants could "cry" when in pain...? Just a few thoughts

great quote !! hahaha -
Posted 16 years ago #I am not a huge meat person so i wouldn't mind being a vegetarian at all, probably would have a hard time giving up dairy, but at least giving up meat is a HUGE step up! Im working on it
-
Posted 16 years ago #isnt giving up dairy veganism? ive always though not eating the by products of animals, honey, milk and eggs etc, was a step 2 far, surley, as long as an animal aint harmed i cant see the problem? still, your choice not mine. lol.

Its weird, i do eat meat (even thought lately i have been getting grossed out by it) but i genuinly love animals THAT much i want to work on not eating them. I dont care if people eat meat because thats their choice, everyones different but for me personally, it really is not that healthy for you and you can get the vitamins you need from other things other than meat. I hope that one day i can eliminate it all, chicken is my only struggle -

Haha. Couldn't put it better -
Posted 16 years ago #Interesting thread... I think I'm in agreement with SLC head when he says he doesn't like eating meat that is intensively farmed due to taste and quality. In an ideal world, all meat that i eat would be high quality and free-range etc... no such luck
Jay, interesting about the vegan atheletes and stuff too, I think there's a lot of misconceptions around veggie/vegan diets. My girlfriend is awesome at cooking amazing meals on the cheap, and some of the vegetarian meals she's served up have been off the hook, roasted veggies, all kinds of chickpea nonsense... I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. But I think being a healthy vegetarian requires extra effort, that a lot of people including myself are too lazy to deal with. I think that more and more people will ditch meat though, because it's just getting too freaking expensive. Local butchers are being priced out by supermarkets, and supermarkets just sell sh!t these days, and expensive sh!t at that... -
