Posted 16 years ago #Seems like a bunch of PUTS heads are at desk jobs that bore them. As a young, naive, impressionable youth I'm wondering what made y'all come to this point in your life? Got regrets? Happy with where your life is overall? Still chasing that dream to be a musician/actor/painter/filmmaker?
I wanna hear y'all speak. -
Posted 16 years ago #I'm telling my academic advisor tomorrow that i want to switch out of my current major (Business Construction Management) into Visual Communication Design. I realized I don't want a desk job or to be a manager so I'm heading the art and design route. Art, design and self expression are really my passions, I'm just pissed it took me to the end of my sophomore year to get the balls to do what i want. At an engineering school like Purdue theres such an emphasis on science that they make you believe other colleges such as liberal arts are lesser schools. I don't let that phase me tho, they say do what makes you happy and everything else will fall in place. I'm an art boy for life f*** a suit and a tie because I'll know I made a difference on the day that I die.
Peace

Posted 16 years ago #Word, Human. I'm trying to do this with my comedy. Make a dent in the world doing what I love before I pass. Don't need $200k a year to do that.

Posted 16 years ago #Rent m*therf*cker, I got bills to pay and sh!t. Hate to be my usual cynical self, but when I was your age I was still all "i'm gonna do a job that I love, and that satisfies my intellectual curiosity". I'm working on getting there, going back to uni and stuff, but you still got to pay your way, well i do anyways... I think the number of people in this world that are doing what they want to do is very few indeed. In an ideal world I'd be a scuba diving instructor in the whitsundays, with my own sailboat...
I paid my dues so I'm on some exotic island, smilin, sun shinin all of my diamonds, sippin on martinis, bad hookers in bikinis, an airplane load of exotic work from Tahiti, plus a squad of killer b!tches that all carry uzis, I got a lot so if it gets too hot, jump in the million dollar jet or the billion dollar yacht...
no wait, that's a jeru song.

Posted 16 years ago #Not so much a desk job, but i used to be a "traffic managment personell" basically, wenever u saw roadworks, i was the person who put the signs and cones out. mind numbing but a good laugh. ive had around 14 jobs and considering ive only been working for just over 6 years, thats a pretty high number. lol.
Ive gone back to uni, ive still got some loans n sh!t ive gotta pay, and im working on em slow but i jus thought f*ck it, i need to do summat more with my life, this aint for me, now im in uni working for a degree, i still dont know what i wanna do tho. lol.
Ive realised tho, theres no wrong way of going through your life and theers always a way, sometimes a sh!t job can be good tho, i know bricklayers on more than doctors, sure the works physical, but u dont take ur job home with u and ur hours are fixed so u work all day n do wot u wan in the night. Uni aint always the answer.
Also, summat ive always felf is if u wanna be a painter/writer etc, u dont need a degree to tell u how to do it but u might need a job to help you pay for it. my 2 cents.

Posted 16 years ago #it's the nature of the beast. Most jobs require the use of a computer, so you're basically sitting a t a desk for your 8 hours, minus getting up for meetings and whatnot (in a literal sense). I think we all wish we'd hit the lottery or something and not have to get up and go to work.

Posted 16 years ago #i agree with dodo
...rent/bills suck...living in the real world sucks at times.
i was always really into sports...and studied mass communication in college (did some radio, etc.)
from college, got an internship...and now a full0time "desk job". I do work in the sports industry...and it does have its perks.
i do get to create and host a monthly podcast on our website...so i still get to use aspects of my education. I basically just help run a small business. I just dont like "the nature of the beast"...and the business "system".
but...bills/rent have to be paid (i guess)...and i am in a better situation than most id say...
truth is you cant always do what u want...but make the best of the hand u get -
Posted 16 years ago #so what do you do sweetness? journalist or what?
I'm a statistician for the NHS (socialist health service)... It's ok, but I want to be getting into some higher tier public health stuff, hence going back to uni. I'd quite like to be involved in contraception proliferation projects. No More Babies!!! -
Posted 16 years ago #our company does tickets and travel packages to any sporting event in the world...so i do sales
marketing/advertising...web page development/product development...and i mentioned the podcast
...basically everything that needs to be done on a given day for a small business
could be worse...but def blows sometimes
i just dont take it home with me....and enjoy life

Posted 16 years ago #Sweetness, I agree. As long as you're moving up the ladder so to say. If you're stuck at the same job at the same pay for several years then yeah you'll be unhappy with the desk job. But with promotion/new positions comes the excitement of more responsibility. Especially if you are doing something you love or are good at. It's satisfying when people look at you as the go to guy for something and you realize your worth to the company.
Simply put, all your college degree does is show your future employer that you can show up on time and finish a task. All that other stuff on your resume is important, but if you can show up on time and do your job, you're gravy. -
Posted 16 years ago #could be much worse dude. You could be working in the financial sector (c*nts) you could be working for some big faceless corporation, you could be working for walmart, and at least your employers allow you a semblance of creativity ya know, with the podcast and all. I'm lucky in the same way that my job allows me a little bit of creative agency, they want someone who can problem solve and use their initiative rather than a cubicle zombie...
