   Hey P army!

   know I think this is just me looking WAY into a certain lyric Thes has in 'The Dig', but being a Madlib fan as well, it got me thinking and speculating. Idk if this discussion has been talked about yet in this forum, but I figured I'd start the convo since I just heard the track.

   The line is as follows: "I known places you don't, did places you won't/yo f*** a loop digga in my city, man just stay home!"

   as most know, Madlib coins himself The Loop Digga, so I feel like Thes' choice of words is very specific, meaning if he wanted to call out the general wack public, he could've chosen a different term. But since Madlib also hails from LA (Oxnard, technically, but he's based in LA), and Thes explains that LA is his city and whoever (Mablib?) is in LA while he is should not even bother trying to be a producer/MC while he's doing his thing.

   Does my hypothesis have any legitimacy or is this just me looking too deeply into the lyric and hoping that Thes and Madlib have a mutual respect for each other, because they f***ing should since they're both geniuses!

   Thoughts? Comments?

   That would suck if true, and if so maybe I should stop using Quasimoto as my pic. Can't imagine what else those lyrics would be referring to though. I did always wonder why there's been no PUTS-Madlib collaboration over the years considering they are both masters of hip-hop and live in such close proximity to each other.

   And per our KK/DOOM discussion, it would be kinda weird if Double was a big DOOM fan but Thes and Madlib had a beef. And per the Not So Original Samples thread, that would be an interesting choice for Madlib to use the same sample for his LA song "Lakers" that PUTS used for "Down In LA."

   I've definitely read into lyrics to a similar extent, so I totally understand where this idea is coming from. In my opinion, though, it's probably nothing. Here are my thoughts:

   The term "loop digga" is general enough to not be specifically aimed at Madlib. I feel like the terminology "digging in the crates" is pretty widely-used in hip hop. "Loop" is also pretty ubiquitous. So to combine the two moderately common terms to make "loop digger" is not that unlikely a thing for Thes to come up with.

   That line is also on the subtle side. I feel like Thes is generally pretty clear about things he dislikes and even will name specific people (see: will.i.am) in some situations. It seems a little out of character for Thes to take a shot in that fashion.

   Finally, why on Earth would he want to say "f*** Madlib"? Madlib is well-respected in most hip hop circles and definitely produces dope sh!t. There obviously could be something we don't know about but Madlib seems like someone Thes would likely respect.

   Those are just a couple things that came to mind when I read that. I definitely have done some similar speculation in the past so I totally get the thought process that led you to that idea. Either way though, I definitely hope you're wrong

   This has been addressed in this forum before, waaaaay back though so it'll take some diggin' to find it... Basically it was a one-sided beef that Madlib had with Thes for said reference, which was not aimed directly at Madlib but at the "Loop Diggers" that would come to LA and pillage the local record shops for sample source records etc... Thes wasn't referencing anyone specifically but saying if your Loop-Digging in LA gtfo! The music means more than that and demands respect is how I take that line...

   While I sincerely hope that there's no beef between the two, these alternative explanations don't quite make sense to me. Are there really tons of people coming to LA and swooping on all the good music? And if there are, how poserish can they really be if they like the same music Thes likes? I always think of posers as liking the trendy sh!t that Thes shouldn't give a f*** about, not the sh!t that's actually worth finding. And if Thes is against people taking the good sh!t that he wants then that makes him kind of a dick. Also, I would think that Thes would've known that Madlib calls himself the Loop Digga, and therefore wouldn't have made such a careless mistake as to accidently insult him.

   I'm certainly not trying to say that Thes is a dick. Just that in an occam's razor sort of way the lyrics make more sense if there was a beef between the two, even if the beef was just a stupid misunderstanding. Like most beefs are.

   Again, I hope this isn't true. Or (at least) ongoing.

   Here's what Sactown wrote on the PUTS wiki page, which I believe was verified by Thes before being posted,"...The track "The Dig" also apparently seemed to contain a negative reference to Madlib (who also referred to himself as "Tha Loopdigga") in the lyrics "f*** a loop digger in my city, man, just stay home", and many on the L.A. music scene were incensed. However, Thes One claims to not have known about Madlib's alternate name and had meant to aim the lyric at hip hop sampling artists who were not interested or engaged in the music they were sampling or the history behind it.[3]"

   Edit: looks like the source info is from the 10YOTO Booklet, I'll have to look into mine if Sac doesn't chime in here soon!

   ^^ There's a number of really good points in AGroPDX's post, but it really boils down to the above.
   The percieved controversy in that line from 'The Dig' is indeed explained at length in the 10YOTO booklet (I'm sure someone will be happy to transcribe it if necessary), but I honestly have to wonder why anyone would even assume Thes was disrespecting Madlib here???
   And even IF there were anything more to it, why should we make a big deal of it, much less feel obligated to take sides etc. etc.? Sorry, but that's just silly... (For the record I feel the exact same way about the will.I.am thing, too: It's not worth my time.)

   The MF Doom theory is equally farfetched. thebigdes & DeLaTribe, try and see the bigger picture here: both ideas stem from your personal listening habits more than anything else! I kinda doubt Madlib or Doom have much, if any, creative impact on the P - they probably know who these guys are and might have heard some of their music, but Thes and Double have always been a self-contained group and had their own varied and eclectic sources of inspiration...

   (I'd even go so far as saying both Doom and Madlib are quite overrated, but that's a whole different can of worms. Not looking to de-rail this entire topic with such a statement, but both of their names have been blown completely out of proportion by Stones Throw's marketing; along with the seemingly endless "Dilla" hype.)

    indeed it does esomedina, thanks for the verification! glad to know this idea was just an irrational fear of mine...

    twelve, i feel ya, i admit i listen to DOOM and PUTS and Madlib more than other artists, but at least know i know its no beef and it sparked a good discussion! appreciate the input yall, this forum is the sh!t.

    now onto a real beef and one the P always wins

    des, there's nothing wrong with listening to Doom (I'm not doing the "all caps when you spell the man's name, LOL) or Madlib at all. I like both myself, but at the same time I'd maintain that neither has released anything noteworthy in years, certainly nothing that would've turned heads if they hadn't already been established artists.

    I'm not just talking about the flood of gimmicky reissues either (there must be 20+ different ones of 'Operation: Doomsday' alone by now): I think it's painfully obvious Mr. Dumile is scraping the bottom of the barrel selling rings, footwear, etc. branded with his gladiator mask while struggling his way through the 15th something-villain/-doom collabo records or recycling his 'Special Herbs' loops yet again. Talk about beating a dead horse.
    What's Madlib up to anyways?!?! For someone who supposedly turns out new music by the hour there's been a notable shortage of output ~ since the end of 2011's 'Medicine Show' marathon, hasn't there..? The only things I can think of off the top are 'Rock Konducta' and 'Piñata'...
