Renowned physicist Stephen Hawking has repeated his long-held belief that intelligent aliens are likely to exist, and that a visit by them to present-day humanity would probably have unfortunate consequences for us.

Publicising a new documentary he has made for the Discovery Channel, the legendary boffin told the Times at the weekend:

?To my mathematical brain, the numbers alone make thinking about aliens perfectly rational... If aliens ever visit us, I think the outcome would be much as when Christopher Columbus first landed in America, which didn?t turn out very well for the Native Americans.?

Yes, without any doubt there are another race or species out there. wether they are independence day type aliens or just a mutation of us i dont know, whos to say they are an "advanced" race out there? prehaps theyre very stupid and are a sort of slug?

I dont believe aliens have visited us yet, prehaps if we evolved more and stopped blowing the cr*p out of eachother then maybe we will be ready but right now i just cant see it.

One things for certain, if aliens do ever come to earth, well shoot first and ask questions later, we fear the unknown.

Im surprised hawkings has claimed the aliens would most likely be "travellers" who have not got a home and are searching for a new planet to inhabit so they will destroy us? he is a very intelligent person and to make a bold claim like that seems a bit pointless, he doesnt know and neither do we, its all just guess work for now aint it.

So yes there are aliens, but we pose a bigger threat to ourselves than they do right now.

EDIT: And another thought, with the billions of galaxys around, whos to say they have even found us yet? Or if they have found us, maybe were just not that important and our world isn't worth theyre time?

And (damn you loudwon, u got me thinking now) if they have made contact on earth, whos to say we havent locked the person up in a loony bin for saying he talked to aliens? everyone assumes because the president of USA is the most powerful man on earth aliens would want to speak to him?

I need a wrap and to sit and ponder.

I'd hope if they were advanced that they would be peaceful and perhaps be able to share information with us on the creation of the universe etc.

Also our Sun is a small star... so aliens could be like 500 times bigger than us!

Because of how long space travel could take, they could have travelled near earth 1000s of years ago, had a quick look... "nah its a bit boring here lets go back to Galaxy that looked like a weed leaf."

Hawking's could be trying to generate interest in his new show or trying to increase the fear factor of aliens so that science gets more funding.

NASA, the best funded space agency of the human race, boasts a budget of less than $20bn - a small fraction of a single percentage point of US government spending, and a tinier proportion yet of US gross domestic product.

That reminds me of something, simpsons or futurama, when someones talking about being forced to take part in a brutal cross breeding program with sexy alien ladies...

I dunno man, I'm game for alien contact, not just cos of the sexy alien ladies... I think aliens would look at us like we look at ants, a curiousity more than anything else. It would be a fitting and ironic end to the human race, seeing as we constantly think we're innately superior to any other organism. Taste of our own medicine, ya get me?

Of course, the aliens would attempt to integrate me into their society thanks to my superior computer game and rolling skills. Forward rolls that is...

If Hawkings wanted to increase the funding science gets he should of said something like "...i believe there is a good chance the aliens are habouring weapons of mass distruction and they also have big massive oil fields on a nearby planet...." LMAO.

Good point on the size thing, we could be some alien kids science project (see simpsons/south park, lol) or maybe jesus was an alien put here 2000 odd years ago but we put him on a cross, who knows.

As for the contacting aliens, we should be careful, we could end up being the planet down the street which have constant 24hr partys and wont turn the noise down, then the aliens might com kick our ass for making a racket. hehe.

What soungs could we play the aliens to get em to take notice? bit of pink floyd or bob marley? Rock sum PUTS out the system?

I reckon hawkings got a great sense of humour. He was on the simpsons ffs... he had a boxing glove spring out of his chair and punch homer in the face. He was also in futurama.

I reckon if he saw lego hawking he'd like it.

True, i forgot he was on simpsons, a helicopter come out the top and he flew away. lol. I forget about the simpsons sometimes, you have southpark, family guy etc, in the news being controversial but the simpsons has its own quiet subtle way of saying big things.

Yo everyone! Glad you guys can talk bout some aliens. Now its time to get serious.

Assuming aliens do exist, and by aliens I mean intelligent life forms, making large assumptions about their nature and intent I don't think is appropriate. However, this does not mean we cannot figure some things out already:

1) If they are visiting Earth, this implies that their civilization has figured out how to travel the cosmos appropriately. They must be incredibly advanced technologically, as well as already know the laws that govern the universe, and are able to use them to their advantage.

2) Weather they will be hostile or not is not immediately obvious. Hawking says it "will be like Columbus visiting America," but he is assuming the aliens will think/act like humans. They will have evolved on a different planet, under different circumstances, and as such, their thought processes might be extremely different.

As of now, there is no concrete evidence that aliens have visited Earth. I personally do no believe so. However, it is a fun idea to think about.

If we don't destroy ourselves, we will one day venture to the stars.
