Posts: 300Posted 10 years ago #Great write-up once again Sactown! Really getting me pumped for the show Friday. I'm hoping all the opening acts are the same, they all sound solid. Can't wait to see Revolutionary Rhythm again. I've never seen Villain Park or DJ Day so that should be cool. And I'd never heard of Hugh Augustine before but he sounds interesting as well.
So I'm definitely gonna be there early, who's going who wants to meet for a beer?

Don't know either of them but their stuff on youtube sounded good. Too bad, I was really looking forward to the LA lineup but I'm sure this will be cool too. And I'll still be drinking early...

If I remember correctly, she had good stage presence and a strong flow, so I don't think you'll be disappointed! I just hope people nod their heads for the openers if they're good.

Posts: 3,255Posted 10 years ago #Alright, here's another lengthy show write-up for SF. As always, pictures/video to follow (Time To Rock & SF Knights vids are up on my Instagram, pmuny, already & Thes' last two posts about the SF show are pictures I took with his phone).
Pre-Fillmore antics: Hit SF around 3:15 p.m. and decided to walk the 45 min from the Fillmore to Amoeba on Haight St. (I'd eaten to much on Thanksgiving; figured the walk would do me good!) They didn't have anything I was willing to shell out for, but I got some exercise. Got back to the Western Addition/Japantown (where the Fillmore is) around 5:30, ate some good food, then hung around outside the Fillmore for ~20 min. (Thes told me he'd be there around 7:15.)
Just a side note: The Fillmore is a really interesting place. Most shows that you attend, the security staff are really uptight and get really pissy about people smoking weed, but the Fillmore is a real "anything goes" kind of place. I watched the security staff at the performer entrance for the 20 minutes, and the dudes were CRAZY. One guy had a suction cup gun, and was shooting it at bus stop posters the whole time, and another guy (ON THE JOB, mind you) was running out into Geary Street, yelling "Don't kill my baby!! AHHHHHHHHH!!!" and generally freaking passers-by out the entire time I was out there. The rest of the staff weren't fazed (they looked baked beyond belief), and one grubby little lady kept bringing trash out from inside the theater, one tiny bucketful at a time. I felt like I was in a living avant-garde art piece or something.
Anyway...
Pre-show: Thes and Double rolled up at 7:15 on-the-dot, and they had me come in with them. (Thes introduced me as... the stage manager?!? HAHAHAHA.) When we got inside, I did some odd-jobs for them while they set up the show. There wasn't a lot to do, honestly. For one thing, they didn't bring any merch with them. I felt kinda bad for people who might've wanted a memento of the show, but it sort of made sense: unfortunately, they'd flown up on the busiest travel day of the year, and I think the logistics of taking all of it would've been too hard. Thes actually told me that their plane flight up had been seriously delayed, and they wouldn't have even made the show if they hadn't been able to jump on another plane at the very last-minute (they were the LAST two people on another plane that took off like 5 minutes after they got on). The show basically almost didn't happen. I really hope that PUTS bring some stuff to the other shows later this year, though!!
Pardon all the digression, just kinda crazy hearing about the difficulties of touring.
They soundchecked for a while (I've got a bit of it on video!), and then we all went up and hung out in the green room while people filtered in. The Fillmore was the first place I interviewed PUTS in 2011 (check the website for the transcript of that), but since they were touring with Mac Miller at the time, they'd had the smaller green room back then. This time, they had the big one (as the headliners), and it was nice. Couches and everything. They told a few stories, talked about Thes meet-up with Groove Merchant SF (he got some rare vinyl gems), and they also were ecstatic about the fact that pre-sales were in the 450-500 range. I'm not trying to diss L.A., but the S.F. crowd was about three times the size of L.A.'s crowd, and Thes and Double were STOKED. The only downside was, because security gets tighter around the holidays, Double hadn't brought anything to smoke before the show, and he was hoping to get in a drag or two. I jokingly mentioned that they should play "Acid Raindrops" first so he could get one from the crowd, and PUTS actually thought about it seriously for a second, haha. I also told them that the crowd in L.A. had really wanted to hear Time To Rock Out Sh*t, and because I said that, they chose to put it in the S.F. show (as the encore). I don't think they were planning to play it initially.
The first opening act, the "Sweater Funk DJs" were not all that impressive. They were playing the wrong type of music, for one thing. It was almost all 80's slow-tempo R&B, and it's sorta hard to get the crowd pumped with that kind of thing. The only bright side was that I heard a few sample sources for PUTS songs among the playlist, but I think, after a while, even PUTS was hoping they'd throw on at least one hip-hop track or something that would pump the crowd up a bit more. Just because that 80's stuff can make good sampling doesn't mean that it'll be good for a hip-hop show in its un-distilled form, you know?
Thankfully, the other opener, Melina Jones, did a bit of a better set and warmed up the crowd. She's got some serious hip-hop attitude (in a good way), and by the time her set was done, the place was PACKED and the heads were nodding a bit. Just before PUTS left the green room to go on stage, Thes gave me his cell phone and asked me to shoot as much video and pictures as I could for him. They said I had free run of the stage if I needed it.
From what I understand, Melina Jones ended a touch early, but PUTS were actually right on time (they were supposed to go on at 11 p.m.). They needed some time to get their mics and tables set up after Sweater Funk (who unfortunately played a few more slow tracks between Melina & PUTS).13lood13ath said:

San Francisco Knights (which they closed their main set on) was roast motherf*ckin turkey. Thes did the Rob Ford at one point (unlike L.A., he invited someone on stage... right, 13lood13ath?? Haha.) And after trying to teach the audience, he said "Look, guys: if you do the Rob Ford at a party, you're guaranteed... to never get laid".
As I said before, I think they chose Time To Rock as an encore because I'd said the forum cats and L.A. wanted to hear it more in the shows. Thes turned to me and asked if I wanted to go up on stage with the mic & ask everyone if they wanted one more song. I was like, "What?! Sure!" So I sorta played it up: "They asked me to ask you if you wanted one more song... What? I can't hear you!...Huh? What?..." Once they were screaming, I turned it back over to Thes, grabbed my camera, and started filming again. I'd said it was one of the best shows I've seen of theirs.
After the show: I hung out with them for a while and listened while they reviewed their performance and took down the stuff on stage. I chatted for a while with them about how everyone was doing back at home (Blewfoot, Double's dog, etc.), and I heard a few more stories. They chilled with Del tha Funkee Homosapien, as well as Mykah 9 from Freestyle Fellowship, at the Fillmore before, and they also talked about how much Mike enjoyed touring the UK (he supposedly had a smile on his face the entire time they were travelling among shows). They also guiltily admitted to binge-listening to LunchMoney Lewis' Bills the entire time they were there, haha.
Eventually, around 1:45 a.m., I took off back for Sactown. It was a good night!

Totally forgot that they played Time To Rock Our sh!t until you mentioned it, but that was awesome. Didn't run into Sactown this time, but I did see Blood Bath outside the show afterwards and told him how terrible his Rob Ford was HAHA! (I Would've been nervous as hell too, and probably would've fallen off stage to boot!)
My brother and I got there right when Sweater Funk started, and I totally agree with Sactown - they were underwhelming to say the least. Melina Jones was cool though and there was a big crowd by the time she went on.
Not sure if the show was technically a sell out but the place was packed. AND THE P f***ing BROUGHT IT!!! I've only been to a handful of PUTS shows but this was by far the best, and I think just being at The Fillmore had a lot to do with that. The P always has great stage presence but the past venues I've seen them didn't compliment their presence nearly as perfectly as The Fillmore did.
The P sound fills every inch of the venues they play but the other places I've seen them at weren't open enough to really capture everything making things a little too contained and claustrophobic. Whereas The Fillmore was not only able to capture the fullness of the sound but accentuate it. The Fillmore lets the music breathe. And I've been to other shows there where the band isn't quite able to play up to such a historically demanding venue, but not PUTS. The ghost of Jerry Garcia would've been proud of this one.
I was disappointed that there wasn't a gig poster like there usually is for Fillmore shows (and my brother was hoping to grab some vinyl), but no worries. I'll remember my hazy impressions of that show for a long time.

I guess because I didn't see the merch booth and like you said with Melina Jones ending early and the extra songs by Sweater Funk, it just seemed they were running behind. I was a little bummed because I was hoping talk with them for at least a sec. before or after the show. Yeah, I wasn't really feeling Sweater Funk, but MeIina definitely tore it up! Awesome energy and stage presence. I was at that Oakland show last year when Melina opened and that show was crazy as well! If I remember right PMuny, that was the show we were kicking it in the green room with them and then later Thes had to throw out a drunk guy who was a little too rough in the crowd.
Yep, that was me doing the Rob Ford! Holy sh!t, that was amazing! I've seen you bust out the Rob Ford on stage with them before too. I'll admit, it was pretty funny when I f*cked up at the beginning, and Thes was like "yo dude why don't you just stand behind me." lol! I forgot to put my hand over my heart, hand over my heart haha. I was a little embarrassed because i should have known better (that's what I get for getting faded before doing the Rob Ford), but round 2 was perfect and people were telling me afterwords they thought it was all just planned. I had a handful of people ask me after the show if we had planned that out before and I was like, "No, but I'm glad you thought it was! lol." Does anyone else remember when Thes announced the "Rob Ford Contest" where you could send in a video of yourself doing the dance and the winner for best one would have won $1000? I think they only announced it at couple shows. Yo PMuny, I think it was you who told me at the Harlow's show last year that they had to cancel that contest for some reason. Definitely keep me posted on the footage from the Fillmore show. I'd love to see what you recorded. I saw you working hard moving all over the place so I know you got some awesome angles.
I know williamhmacy was there because I met both him and de la tribe at that show. What's up P fam!

Time to Rock Our sh!t rocked the house! I've had the privilege of seeing the P perform this once and it was the best, as I'm sure this one was!!
I'm curious...what tracks off TGOS1 did they perform?
