It was no Curren$y show, (holy mother of god, I thought the Fire Department was going to come in there was so much smoke). But there were quite a few people blazing. He started off with an a cappella for Back From the Dead, but then the rest of the tracks were from the other albums which was great to hear them play through.

RSDgimmick day always causes pressing plants to become even more backed up than they already are with everyone looking to (re-)release vinyl these days. It's a SAD bit of irony that the resurgent popularity of the format - especially the major labels muscling their way back into the very market they abandoned and tried to shut down years ago - adversely affects many of the small labels and independent artists who kept it alive all in the meantime.
To end this on a more positive note though: TGOS#2 is crazy good! Even better than #1 IMO and I liked that one a lot.

And yes, even though I definitely need several more listens for it to sink in properly, first impressions are that it is even better than Step 1!!!
A huge thanks to Mike and Chris for releasing this for free. But of course I also ordered the CD, cassette and instros. Can't wait for the wax. Will be sharing and spreading the word about this release for sure!!

Thes dropped a verse or two on Back From The Dead to start Santa Cruz but it was without a beat. They still rocked both nights, though.
I think New Parish might have a tight curfew; they went longer at the Catalyst.

Posts: 300Posted 10 years ago #I think Ste. For Superheroes is my favorite too. That bad ass bass line at the end is dirty nasty. I like Graffiti on a High School Wall a lot too. Back From The Dead of course, and After These Messages is great, so is Feels Good. OK so the whole thing is magnificent. There's a lot packed into that 30 min of music.
Can't wait for the vinyl to come out but really think headphones are the way to go.

The show was awesome on Thursday. It was basically one big Prince Tribute. They opened with Back From The Dead to a Prince beat.Thes later did a Prince freestyle (which was going really well until he tried to rhyme something with Minneapolis). And they started the encore just hanging out on stage while Double K played Prince songs, who was getting visibly choked up while playing I Would Die For You. And Thes was wearing his purple shirt and shoes. It was all a very somber yet celebratory experience. Definitely a special show.
The venue, New Parish, was real cool. Never been there before despite it being 5 min away from my place, and they do a lot of hip-hop so I'll definitely have to go back (maybe smoke out the place for Curren$y in June like instrumentalist!). The place had a great house system - it wasn't too loud and you could hear everything, even the lyrics, crystal clear. And it had a great layout too that made everything feel close together without being claustrophobic.
Set-wise they played their standard show. They started with 4 Everybody, which was cool (might have done that at the last Fillmore show too but can't quite remember), then went into Roundabouts, Scenario, Second Track, Tuxedo Rap...etc. Talked about getting a beer with Donald Trump during Beer, did Montego Slay, Acid Raindrops, SF Knights, and closed the show with Hang Loose.
It was my wife's first show. She thought it was awesome but was disappointed they didn't play Pass The 40. She told Thes after the show that they "HAVE to play it next time cuz my mother ain't looking," and Thes got a kick out of that, so if they add that song to the show from now on she's why haha! Didn't get a chance to say anything to them myself, which was too bad cuz I really wanted to tell them how great I think PT. 2 is and it didn't seem like too many people at the show had heard it yet. Save that for next time I guess.

Posts: 112Posted 10 years ago #As others have stated already, Back From the Dead is the joint! The whole EP is heat. I honestly never expect anything less from the P, but it's almost like they get stronger in some ways with every release.
I think it's incredibly rare to have been around for almost 20 years and still keep the quality top notch. They could honestly do this for as long as they want.

Holy crap, Santa Cruz, y'all like your weed! Mike and Chris went on stage without a hint of THC in 'em, but by the end of the night, Thes was so high from the crowd's weed smoke that he couldn't put Double's scratch record back in the slipcover.
I also had some weird, scary, muscular guy next to me the whole night, trying to talk me into a fistfight (and moshing and yelling at Double K when he wasn't doing that); that cat was trippin' hard on something. Too bad I didn't get a chance to meet up with any of the forum cats at SC!The set was good, though. They played most of the standard tracks, and put in some tributes to Phife, and scratched BOTH Sgt. Peppers AND Back In Black for 4/20. There was a Sublime cover band playing on the Catalyst's other stage that night, and Thes joked around about cover bands at one point too.
Like I said previously in the thread, Thes and Double were so busy getting the record to sound right that they didn't have time for much else, including vinyl/cassette/CD production, but that also extends to finalizing "Back From The Dead" as a part of their live show. Bummer... During their soundcheck before the show, Thes was trying to find a way to work the instrumental into the speakers so he could do his verse from it, but it wasn't working exactly right, so like Here Comes Treble said, he only did a little of it accapella. (They left the new EP out entirely from the Oakland show.)
Chris and Mike had me working the backstage as usual, too, and Catalyst's green room wins as the #1 dirtiest room I've ever been in. Everything rickety, everything smeared with nicotene and graffiti, it smelled pretty foul... someone even wrote "BUTT STUFF" in big letters above the toilet paper dispenser, which was good for a laugh. We were right above the Sublime tribute band's merch table, and it was HUGE (five people running it), which Thes was sorta marveling at.
Chatted about a few other things as well backstage... Thes was saying that, as soon he gets back to L.A. after the two shows, he was going to be concentrating all his time on getting the physical releases to the fans. The physical releases are #1 on his priority list right now, but it'll take time to get them made.
PUTS was gonna Uber back to their hotel for the night, but it was on my way out, so I drove them over, and then got back to Sac around 4:30 a.m. Oof.
