As to why people buy it on itunes: I suppose it was/is convenient for those who use it anyway and it's a way to support Thes and Day, even if they only see a fraction (2/3?!? I've been trying to read up on how much Apple truly pays out, but their system of doing it by country is confusing to say the least, plus I haven't really found any statistics post 2015?) of the proceeds.
I tried asking Thes on IG whether he'd considered putting new stuff like this on bandcamp, because I'm fairly certain they're more artist friendly and it might be an option for PL70 to sell both physical and digtial combined (seeing that there hasn't been a way to buy mp3s direct since the Piecelock homepage expired), but sadly he didn't respond to my comment. I'm aware that going through itunes or other major digital distributors may be valuable when dealing with show promoters etc., who measure artists by their online streaming or mp3 sales stats, but TBH I'm an old fart who's been buying records most of his life and simply isn't keen on purchasing something intangiblewhen I know I'll definitely be copping the LP, much less installing a billion dollar corporation's crappy software in order to do so...
