So here's the thing.

I cannot get over the trash i hear on mainstream radio! I mean, is this serious? Auto-tune applied to every vocal track on every song? People still rapping about some lame club-rat girl? Or about how many drugs you sold ten friggin' years ago?

And as PUTS fans, you should agree with me saying that production has gone ape sh!t as well. If you're gonna bust out the 808 again, USE THE RIGHT TONES. That hand clap is wack, man. Not only that, but people aren't even getting creative with their samples anymore. They'll only sample something popular, and only if they have thousands of dollars to do it. Kanye West would shine if he would just back off the popular sh!t and work with more obscure sounds. The string arrangements and pitch altering just doesn't fly with me, man. And for anyone else who digs fat, analog production, it's lame to their ears, too.

On top of everything else, it's all digital. Sure, digital can be cool. MPC's are digital. But see, they're based on an analog foundation, and their compressors sound fat like an analog box. And PUTS utilize analog boards and older signal processors to fatten up that sound; so much so, that when it does eventually make it to ProTools, much of that fatness is not lost. The producers of today either don't even know how to do this, or they take the easier, quicker way out by going straight to the computer.

I'm very impatient with today's music. Everytime I throw on a PUTS cd amongst my peers, everyone shuts up and listens; not to mention asks who the artist is. People are STARVING for something sacred like PUTS.

What are your thoughts?

Sometimes its hard to get my friends to just SIT and listen to my music... unless they are blown or something.. because al ot of them like mainstream and/or folks like jayz/ kanye/drake/lil wayne... which everyone has diff taste, but PUTS is completely diff than them.. like my one friend would hear PUTS songs and he never said he didn't like my music but that its just too slow paced (i listen to a lot of mellow sh!t) so then one day i put on Acid Raindrops since that one is a littlem ore popular and he liked it! for folks that like mainstream, you kind of gotta have them listen to the more popular of the underground songs first.. then once they are reeled in.. have em listen to the deep stuff. At first honestly, there were quite a few PUTS songs i was kind of like ...eh.. not really my style.. but then, after listening to them more and loving them more and more, i re-listened to those songs and now some of them are my favorite!

Some things just have to grow on people.. but you are right.. people are starving for good sh!t but they just dont know where to find it. I discovered underground on a whim.. had it not been for my friends listening to Grouch n Zion I's Silly puddy.. i probably would have never discovered underground!!!! and the only reason i looked it up is cuz i was so obsessed with the song i absolutely had to find it lol. The rest was history...

I really hope music can revive itself one day.. i mean some radio songs are cool for the clubs n shii.. but not for substance or just to chill too.

My solution to the radio is simply not to listen to it. I haven't tuned in to the radio since the mid 90s. I even disabled my car stereo from being able to receive any radio, mainly because a lot of people who ride along with me sometimes would ask me to put the radio on. So now, instead of sounding mean by refusing to put on the radio, I simply tell them that the radio function on my stereo is broken. Thus, they are forced to listen to whatever I have on hand. Muahahahaha!

Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, Parliament, and People Under The Stairs. If you talk about the content of the music of each of these three groups you'll find unique sounds, musical elements, and perspectives on life. If you discuss the content of mainstream music you can see that there is little to no originality, played out themes, and you are left spiritually dry because that sh!t is so shallow.

This little tag along thought belongs in the rant thread, but i'm posting it here because when your in a good rant you don't give a f***.

"I wanna be a billionaire. So f***ing bad" is probably the most immature song on the radio today, and irritates me the most. I just can not see myself having any type of positive interaction or conversation with anyone who gives that song a shred of props. Music is artform... come up with some better lyrics and concepts that don't involve how badly you want money to solve on your problems. To cap this rant off i'll leave the captive audience(what makes a good rant great :) ) with two things.

1) Whoever helped make that song, Get soul.

Listen to the radio during the day and that's what you'll hear (that's why I don't... keep it strictly Radio 4 during daytime)

however, you have to know what to check for. Shows I listen to every week and you US heads should peep:

I f*ckin love that chat!

I used to work in Virgin, when it still existed as a Music store, and I reckon about 80% of folk who went in there bought the top 3 albums in the chart, I sh!t you not. A lot of people don't really care about music in the same way we do, they just listen to whats most immediately accessible, the sh!te on the radio.

To be fair, peeps have been complaining about how sh1t and mainstream radio is since radio was invented. When it was the dude reading the alphabet in the first ever broadcast, motherf*ckers were probably saying "Why does he keep going on about the consonants, they're so f*ckin mainstream!"

But I think you're right A.I.Y.T.A. (arthiritis) I think music today is much more disposable than music of previous generations, mostly due to the digitization of the medium I suppose, and how easy it is to churn sh!t out these days... sigh...

yeah, so this mainstream argument which dodo has said raged for many years (like the starwars battle, lol) is intresting. I used to be a very underground dance/electronic head and IMO if u want freshness you gotta look at the underground but, times have changed, ive mellowed a bit and music has changed. ive learnt a few things so here they are:

1. If you dont like mainstream then dont listen, there are so many avenues for listening to whatever you want now that if i dont like summat ill put on a CD/MP3 playa, stream off internet radio, last FM, Souncloud etc.

2. Dont get too snobbish bou music, just coz you thinks PUTS are the best thing in the world dont mean every1 will agree (unbeliavable really tho, lol) so have an open mind, if a track comes on and you like the beat then like the beat, you dont have to like tha artist in question, even if its sum super camp cheesy pop crap, i used to be an arse and moan bou music all the time if i dint like it, ive learnt to jus listen to it for what it is and if i get a chance to educate someone on the finer points of music then i will, if not then smoke a fat doob, even crusty pants maddonna will sound better. lol.

3. Without mainstream there would be no undergroud, if it wasnt for mainstream day time radio 1 DJ Jo Wiley, i wouldnt of heard of the cool kids, thus i wudnt of got into underground hip-hop (as it goes i thought hip hop was rubbish for years) and while you tubing hip-hop i wouldnt of found PUTS, mainstream is a gateway drug if you like, u start with 50 cent and get on the hard stuff like the P. lol.

4. Have an open mind, if theres one thing music has taught me its not to be closed minded, i never would of imagined i would be listening to jazz, classical music, p-funk, etc, and thats because of the P. In some ways the P have opened my mind up to other stuff aswell.

5. HAVE FUN!!! As long as your foots tapping and your smiling, who cares if somethings underground or mainstream, there will always be good music and bad music, just depends on the person and what their taste is.

6. Just coz somethings underground dont mean sh!t, theres sum utter rubbish experimantal artists out there whos idea of music is industrial noises for 50 mins and jus coz somethings mainstream dont mean its good *cough* lady gaga *cough*. lol

jus my views on it. maybe im wrong or maybe im right, who knows

I used to care about what was played on the radio until I realized I never really listen to the radio. The music is not geared towards my taste of music. It's geared towards the dopes that will go out and buy the single or the ringtone. The advertising on these stations is geared towards those simple minded people as well. There's no money on the radio for artisitc expression or being dope. You have to be catchy. Remember, the world is filled with stupid people. We're just the minority. Think about the people who make this music. Then realize there are many more like them that care nothing more than to dance or say the same phrase over and over (Oh Let's Do It!).
