Anyone read Behind The Beat? I got it a couple years ago. More of a picture history than actual written material. Thes is in it. Sheesh, didn't see it has appreciated in value. May have to sell mine!
I'm also going to read We Ate All The Pies: How Football Swallowed Britain Whole during my work commute.

Wow - didn't realise Behind The Beat was worth that much either!! $170 what!
I got a copy when it came out. it's dope, but even when it came out Thes' studio was already out of date (it's from the O.S.T. era... not sure bout other the producers although I'm sure Madlib's is still as messy though). Still, great book!

same here boombip, my theory is, unless you were a fan then you wouldnt know? ive only been digging hip hop for like 2 years tops so im still learning sh!t loads...
Yeah, i get what your saying dodo but when they give me a reading list, i always feel like i should get something not on the list to give me a different perspective over my other classmates...google scholoar is DOPE, my uni has its own database which gets everything from everywhere and puts it one place for me anyways.

Just thought I'd share a crazy book I've been reading lately, with you all. It's called "How To Wreck A Nice Beach" by Dave Tompkins, who also writes for Wax Poetics occasionally. It is a history of the vocoder, and as you can probably tell from the title, it is written in a very off-the-wall style, with lots of randomness that just keeps making me smile. There are lots of cool interviews with people like Grandmixer D.ST, Rammellzee, Bambaataa, and various other old-schoolers. If you like music (as we all do), particularly, Hip Hop, and Electro it is a really good read, and also has some great illustrations and label scans. All in all it is very informative about the historical background of the vocoder, (a phone encryption device used in WW2, by Churchill & Eisenhower, which was then taken up by the KGB, and developed using politacal dissident prisoners). BTW if you didn't guess, the title is the phrase "How To Rekonize Speech" as misheard through a vocoder! Thes, if your listening, WE NEED MORE VOCODER SONGS!!!

Recently read this:
Culture is Our Weapon - book on the influence of AfroReggae in the favelas of Rio, and how they're approaching helping these communities with music projects as well as dance, drumming, sports etc. Heard it recommended by Benji B on his Radio 1 show a while back and picked it up cos is written by Patrick Neate, who also wrote Where You're At which is an awesome book about his travels in hip hop around the world, definitely recommended!

I bought the one on Endtroducing and enjoyed it quite a bit. Overall I think the series is ridiculously overpriced though.
As far as Hip Hop related books go I'll co-sign on Ego Trip's book of rap lists (wouldn't really consider it "reading" - really fun because of all the obscure trivia though) and add Brian Coleman's "Check The Technique". Still hoping he might do a second volume...

Ego Trips Big Book of Racism is pretty hilarious too, slightly less music-orientated but worth picking up. Have heard of it before for will have to check for that Brian Coleman book

Read the People's Instinctive Travels... one and it was pretty cool... the author was dissing on "Ham and Eggs" though and said it doesn't fit with the rest of the album, and I completely disagree, but other than that, it was a good read.trenchmc said:

Well i finished the Book Thief a few months ago which was pretty good and also pretty deep. Just put down the man who broke into auschwitz which was inspirational but also very dark. Now i am looking again and i think i need to go a bit lighter. I do like the sounds of People's Instinctive Travels....i might have to pick that up.
