Back in my "rap is crap lol" days i thought it stupid to take on an alterior name. To me (at the time) it felt as though they wanted to (and oddly enogh i realized this last night) that rappers take on a persona when they are "rapping" as a way of keeping their personal and music lives seperate.

Anyways, Thes One and Double K, why did you guys pick your names, what the signifigance of them, and how did you pick them?

The reason i ask is that I've had the same s/n for awhile now and as i go on with my life i feel its time to pick a name that better suits who i am. So any advice would be cool.

It is so interesting to me to hear people say they used to hate it.

I felt it since day one. Ever since i heard "Egypt"-By Egyptian Lover. You dont really love rap if you hated it then started liking it. sorry.

Probably my sophmore year of high school, but even then i didn't love it (i had no idea about the underground). It was my junior year that i got this amazing mix-tape (You can check/discuss the contents here) and basically my freshman year of college, i got a ton of mp3s (yes including P's stuff) from a friend of mine who is a DJ/digger/etc. Which REALLY got me into hip-hop and then i basically flipped out into it.
(yes i did buy the P's albums later as i got into them.)

I would appreciate some more comments on the names though, as i still haven't come up with anything good. :\

Choosing a name is up to you, and can only be made up by you, since we dont know you in person, there is no way somone here can make a nickname for you that will hold any meaning to yourself. Flip thru the dictionary, it might help you generate some ideas, you know.....

Doc, i dont think that if you hated rap before, and like it now, that you dont really like this music. Look at the artist, he finds an unknown record that would be hated if played alone, but spliced up is another story.
\anyway, im not arguing nothing, so please nobody with a 2 page angry reply.

You know I'm going to have to disagree. Just because at the time i had literally little to no exposure to any good hip-hop and was a 12 year old kid easily influenced by friends, does not mean that now i don't love hip-hop as much as you or whatever elitist bullshizzle you're trying to stroke your ego with.

I can see how thats possible, commercial rap is really popular and people get it twisted.

If you werent present at the time Emile Berliner invented the gramophone, youre not hiphop. But yeah, holmes, you gotta pick your own name man. I picked mine cause everything else was taken. And it has something to do with crime so it elevated my gangsterism status. booyakasha!

Number one:you said you thought "rap was crap". If you feel rap, then you feel rap. You dont wake up one day and go, "oh man, i was wrong. I feel the beats, the soul, i understand it now." doesnt happen. You feel it hte first time you hear it or you dont, you obviously didnt.

Number 2: If i was influenced by my friends, i would be listening to punk and sh!t like that back then. No matter what I FELT RAP.

DOnt use that "mainstream rap sucks" argument. Rap is rap, all kinds. There is good mainstream, good dirty south, good Underground, Good NY gang sh!t.

Here is my response to each one (with a consistent numbering scheme):
1. I didn't say "I thought rap is crap", i said: "I used to say: "Rap is crap". There is a difference between, think and say. The difference being that when you think something, you understand it to be true, but if you just say something you are just saying it to accomplish something. You don't necessairly believe it.
2. Frankly, i was 14, in a new neighborhood, and desperate for friends. Was what i did stupid? Yes. But thats part of growing up, finding that you don't need to be defined by music, sports, friends, and in part why i made this thread. You don't seem to understand that.
3. I do like some mainstream rap, and i think most of it is not that good, I forced myself to listen through 50 Cent - The Massacre before i slammed it. Its just generally i don't like the sound, content and lyrics of most mainstream Hip-hop. I don't see a problem with this as its my own personal taste. I never said "THIS IS SET IN STONE OMG YOU GUYZ ALL SUC!!!111 HURRRRR HURRRR HURRRRR"
I like my Jay-z, Nas, Outkast, Lil Jon (yes, fark off) songs and albums, but i have found that i like alot of the stuff that isn't popular. I think that the people who listent to underground hip-hop though are the people who really love the music, as they see whats in the mainstream and then look for more and more and more.

BUT I GUESS IM WRONG OKAY GUYS ARGH.

edit - Can we please get this thread back on track? Tell me your rap names, the meaning behind them, etc. So i can figure out what i want to be called.

it's not about hip hop or country, mainstream or underground, its about what sounds good and relateable and what's crap and irrelevent to a individual. everyone has their own taste.

natural disaster is my "rap" name. it came from my graffiti name, natural. i love the herbal and nature and all that pretty sh!t....and art came to me "naturally"..... when i started to write and make beats, i decided to add the "Disaster" cause there's already a Natural from chicago (or is it All Natural?), and nas' boy, Nature.... i just thought that Natural Disaster sounds chill as an emcee name. ... natural disaster's quakin the golden state, makin emcees evacuate...
