Ok, so I figured this might be a pointless topic because some may not care at all, some may, but whatever! we haven't had any real new threads in a while..
so I saw a comment from Mambo on one of the threads saying he doesn't understand the point of a sorority club thing.. lol (not trying to bust you out hun, just filling in people the purpose of this thread) so I wanted to give you a little inside scoop on everything, just because I know there are soooooooooo many misconceptions of a sorority that it would be nice to clear some up.
Ok so here goes, I am in a sorority called Delta Gamma that has over 119 chapter in the US and an alumnae chapter in England and I believe Canada. We have been around since 1879. Our philanthropy (what we raise money for and why we exist) is Service for Sight. We raise money for the blind and visually impaired. We participate in Eyeglass drives (try to collect used/new seeing glasses from the community), the blind olympics (blind/visually impaired people participate in sports and we help guide them), games with the blind like Goal Ball, and sooo much more. We have a HUGE event coming up in a few weeks where the proceeds (75%) go to our foundation. We are non profit and we do a lot for the community.
I am only speaking for my sorority of course, but ALL fraternities and sororites raise money for a cause, whether it be breast cancer, st judes hospital, less fortunate children etc.. we all serve a purpose. DO not get me wrong, people do party, some dont partiicpate in anything good we do, there are some bad people in the greek system.. but you find that ANYWHERE you go. My chapter alone has 97 girls and you can't honestly expect 97 completely different girls to all act perfect and be apart of everything. Some join for the wrong reasons unfortunately but this kind of stuff exists everywhere.
Ya we party but the only reason people think we party SOO much more is just because we have more networking and we hear about more stuff than others.
You do make tons and tons of friends but thats not just what it is. What you put in is truly what you get out. I haven't always been the best sister and haven't always served my community as well as i could have, but I have been on top of my game and I am changing that.
We all participate in each others philanthropies and raise money for other causes as well, not just our own.
Idk, I am not your typical sorority girl AT ALL and yet I cannot imagine my life without it. I have seen amazing times, bad times, stressful times, hateful times, I mean I have seen it all in the past 4 years of being in this damn sorority but I love it more than anything. We have special rituals that I believe create a bond not just with our chapter alone but every DG in the world. Some things we all do EXACTLY the same and its just an amazing feeling when you all can relate to each other without even knowing each other.
We have a lot of traditions, no we dont haze ( i would never let that slide and once again Im only speaking for MY chapter unfortunately) , and we are here for a good cause.
I have grown so much from this experience and I would never trade it, I have held positions, I have learned time management, I have partied and had some amazing times, I have girls to study with, I have made some truly BEST friends I cannot imagine life without.
I honestly could go on forever but I just wanted to let yall know, Its NOT what you see in the movies, not all girls are 5'7 blonde hair blue eyes and big boobs. In my sorority alone (which most on campus say they believe its the most diverse sorority) we have white, black, filipino, mexican, peruvian, asian, indian, blondes, brunettes, tall, short, skinny, chubby.. athetic, girly, lesbians, weed heads.. lol its a beautiful thing.
Its definitely not for everyone, dont get me wrong, but I just wanted to say what I had to say :) Hope yall can understand it a little more now, not expecting you to agree or even like them. Thats fine lol, just stating some facts:-p
