Peppers, The White Album for their wide range in instruments, and album length). Some seminal hip-hop albums (Paul's Boutique, 3 Feet High and Rising for the sheer amount of samples used).
What kind of music do you expect the world's biggest pop star (arguably he is the world's most popular current musician) to make? Of course it's going to be "pretentious" and "bloated," he has a lot of things to fit in and a lot of things to say. He's being picked apart by just about everybody, and he's reacting to it the only way he can, by making great music.
I'm not trying to make enemies, but please, please, please listen to the music first. If anything this is his most honest album to date.

Pretentious is attempting all those things without actually haveing the talent or the work ethic to do it. Kanye's new sounds cheaply mixed, the songwriting is pretty lackluster and the production value is low for the producer with the most tools at his disposal. Listen to the All The Lights interlude and try not to chuckle. Amateur hour, as far as Im concerned. And no - people arent 'ripping him apart'. Dude gets all the critical accolades in the world, and then treats everyone like sh!t by acting like a self-absorbed bully.
Daft Punk are great btw.

alibi this is my point. the white album is artistic, eclectic, as is kanye's latest effort. how can you argue that kanye doesnt have the talent or ethic to pull it off? im not about to argue this, dont want to cause bad blood among me and you guys on the boards (i love y'all) but i'll leave you with this. listen to the album, then listen to the samples the album used:

Posts: 584Posted 15 years ago #Hey Hey...i think i'm getting messed up in the mix here....i would also like to say that i like Daft Punk, rocking Around the World with Know How by Young MC is one of my fave mixes to drop.
What i meant is that they had an influence on Mr West that maybe he didn't need and that it produced music that certainly wasn't to my taste (and before you jump) i am not claiming my taste is the right taste. It was a quip, a light hearted observation.
I still say though Kayne has fallen off.....way off
and i stand by that

I hear you on the daft punk thing, its something im particularly picky about, i dont mind cross genre collaberations but when $$$$ is the reason i get a bit funny bou it. I mean, if it was a truly artistic collaberation then it wouldnt be so bad but now theres all these colabs just for financial gain.

Posts: 3,621Posted 15 years ago #Kanye was always said to be an ill producer, but what always bugged me was his ridiculously blatent use of samples. See, Kanye has so much money behind him, he can pay to use whatever samples he likes. This removes any incentive for him to dig for more obscure or interesting source material. Hence, you end up with a straight-up Curtis Mayfield rip, Daft Punk or whatever. Just because he can! The extension of that is now he can't even be bothered to produce much at all, has half his album produced by other people and instead relies on half-arsed 'im the best' lyrics to win everyone over.
The main problem people have with Kanye is that he's constantly proclaiming his own greatness, and potentially he could be really great, but he doesn't seem to put the full effort in to deliver.
