Have you guys heard the song "What You Say" by INI on the CD "Underground Classics"? The beat sounds a lot like Acid Raindrops.

Hmmmmmm.... Intresting, i wonder what the dates are on this? who came out first?
According to the comments on you tube, the sample is taken from a cover of bob dylans 'lay, lady lay' and some argue PUTS ripped it off (even though they both sampled??? lol) and others say its PUTS paying respect to INI, ill be honest, im not entirely sure where i stand on this, you have covers and re-takes in all other genres but there seems to be a notion that it shouldnt be done in hip-hop and all work should be taken from the original which you used as opposed to another artists interpertation of it... does that make sense?

PUTS definitely came after INI.

I'm sure that PUTS did the track in tribute though.. Pete Rock was at the top of his game when he dropped the INI LP (or didn't as the case may be - it only existed as a bootleg for many years).
If you don't have the INI LP - go buy it - classic stuff.

This has been covered before, Thes commented on it I think. Yes they use the same sample and the INI track was recorded before O.S.T. came out but was only released afterwards (2003) - http://www.discogs.com/InI-Center-Of-Attention/release/298776
Although there might have been a bootleg version floating round before?

Yeah - this version came out in 1999 - http://www.discogs.com/INI-Center-Of-Attention/release/491056
Pretty sure that this was semi official (ie Pete Rock had something o do with it).

@eso My sentiments exactly. Countless times dudes have used the same loop as others. That's how hip-hop is. Some people do it as a homage to a classic. Others just come across an ill sample and either know or don't know someone else used it. If it's an ill sample, it's an ill sample. If it's not a homage track I would personally try and flip it in a different way than the next man.
I seem to remember Thes speaking on it awhile ago too.

My first INI bootleg didn't have that track and that was that. As far as that INI goes, check your f***ing dates. That record never came out with THAT SONG until it was bootlegged until sometime around the release of OST, and at that i never heard it until someone came to me and said, yo i think we got a problem here...at which case i was forced with a choice - pull Acid Raindrops from a finished album because someone already used the sample on a unreleased album? come on now. -
