Well, Breakestra is a group that we came up with here in LA over the years. The main member, Miles Tackett, is an old old friend of ours from when PUTS was just becoming a two man group (see two man group post for this history). So back in like 94-95, Miles was throwing these clubs/jam sessions (most notoriously back then at the YaYa Tea bar on La Brea in Los Angeles - which is been gone for years) known as The Breaks. A rotating line up of musicians would come through and jam in this loft..and in the meantime DJ's would spin down on the floor and everywhere in between people were hanging out, freestyling, etc. Rotating DJ's up there were Wolf (who sings for the breakestra and should be recognized as bigtime LA Hip Hop OG) Cut Chemist, Miles, Dusk, Mike, a bunch of LA dudes. It was definately a close knit family and LA Hip Hop as I like to remember it, not what it has become. Subject for another post right there.
I should also say that I know a bunch of musicians, but Miles is by far one of the most talented dudes I have ever had the pleasure to know. Over the years The Breaks evolved into LA landmark weekly The Rootdown, and the revolving jam musicians became The Breakestra with Miles at the helm. The Breakestra has released a string of 45's and Cd's over the years, with a focus, at first, on covering dope breaks used in Hip Hop tracks. The Rootdown is the same Rootdown as Thes One Soundclash at the Rootdown, and might, by this point, be the longest running hip hop related weekly I know of. Aside from that I consider Miles a friend, Millhouse Scoop and I recently helped him a little in building his new Recording Studio, where the new breakestra album was recorded -which leads us to this track.
Miles wanted to have a song that kind of captured the old style feel with the cats from the breaks, so one night a few months ago me and K rolled out to his house and they laid that down while I slept on the floor. The new breakestra album, with that song on it, will be coming out on Ubiquity Records soon (I'm not sure of the date). I also think it might be a 12" as well.
For anyone interested in deep funk stuff Miles released on of my favorite mix cd's last year that I still pump almost weekly. It's called Funky Sole vol.1 and I am going to try and get a few for the store. for more info on Miles and The Rootdown check http://www.rootdownclub.com/ -
