Whoa... "Highlighter" is a seminal work. Even after having to wait another week, struggling with the downloads, Spelunk hooked me up; finally got it yesterday afternoon and burned it to a disc at work. Got home and listened to it in the dark like Thes recommended.
Still going back for extra listens... but here's the early impressions...
1.) "Too Much Birthday" - damn! inspired by the Bernstein Bears and the cutup of "It's my party" is excellent; also enjoy the extra sample that comes in for Double's verse. And the "awwww sh!t" inclusion - total P. Funk/PUTS live show integration right there. Thes you might have to start playing this right after Montego Slay in the set list.
2.) "Electric Tookie," "Dewrit," and "Talkin' Back to The Streets," on heavy rotation, the beats and samples are awesome
3.) "Can't Hold It Back" - A big eff you to the industy; the crowd kept clappin'
3.) "We Got It" - Sounds awesome especially in my car, P coming at ya hard
4.) Lyrics on self-destruction are real deep - love the verse from Thes
5.) Time Bandit - Have the P ever dominated a riff like this? Go ask your mum.
6.) WRLA - Thes and Double K call into a radio show! Double calls "Highlighter" weak. Ha!
7.) Foolish people - makes me feel like an ass for asking for an autograph at a show... but never asked them to smoke up.
8.) Seems like Double is scratching all over the damn place on this album, moreso than I can remember on any other P record recently. Go get you some, big man.
Can't believe it's been about eight years since I found out about ya'll... much respect for keepin' it going and continuing to change up the formula but still do so successfully. I've enjoyed listening to you grow and growing with you. Please don't ever stop making music.
