   Hey everyone, had a few tweets, emails, and PMs come in asking whether Highlighter will be made available on Spotify, Rdio, and other music streaming services. Thes and I talked it over awhile and went back and forth - it's a really tough decision, and I spent some time explaining a bit of our own perspective here:

   In short - I really want to support and be part of these new services, as I really believe in the technology and principals behind them. But unfortunately, I just can't justify recommending them to Chris and Mikey so long as artists get paid less than one cent per play - it simply doesn't align with our mission of being an artist collective dedicated to sustainable creative independence. Emphasis, the sustainable part. No one deserves to be paid in pennies, not you, not us, and not any other artist whose music I enjoy.

   All that said, I'm a Spotify and Rdio user, though I still buy albums. I'm curious who else here uses them, and how you're enjoying them so far. Anyone discovered anything awesome through them by connecting your account to Facebook? The new Facebook music dashboard seems pretty impressive to me and I think it's bound to grow leaps and bounds within the upcoming year.

   I use Spotify as a way to check out new stuff before purchasing. Most of the P's stuff is on there. Some harder to find stuff isn't: American Men Vol. 1, Noonen EP, and Lifestyle Marketing, etc are not. I wondered how much artist's got paid for that but damn 1 cent? New artists usually get bad deals for CD (20 cents a record and such) but 1 cent? I can't blame you for doubting Spotify's business model as it pertains to artists. Its a great deal for consumers, i.e. basically free music (with ads). But for artists, that does seem like a raw deal. I think you guys are doing the smart thing with Piecelock; the P are well known enough (and talented enough) that I see them only getting bigger through increased exposure and more of the same word of mouth based growth. The need for a major label I would think is gone by this point in their career. They can do better for themselves and better sustain their creative activities with an independent type setup. I heard about them from a friend, and now all my other friends know about them because of me. Music spreads easier if the music is slept on and undeniably great . As long as they keep making music like they do, they should be fine without Spotify.....cheers

   My usual routine is Pandora > Youtube > Wikipedia > then Artist website or something like Amazon to buy tracks (if there not on artist page already). i I would use these services to help find new fans and channel them into PL70, Youtube and social sites. Put maybe 1 or 2 of the hotter tracks from the ablum.

   DAMMIT! Half the problem with the music industry is that it's so tightly controlled. You don't hear about those types of decisions when artists have to make them. The fact that y'all have been so available to explain the process of being an independent artist is enough on its own... Shut up and take my money.

   Just read your long-form decision on the website too. I applaud your decision, definitely.

   It's interesting to see how the music industry works... it's like the big media & corporations fight with the consumers over pricing, and no matter how it turns out, either the consumer or the corporation benefits... BUT NEVER THE ARTISTS! I feel like, unless you're a superstar and they are paying you for the right to use your name, most less-known artists get lost in the crazy riptide...

   I feel like this is like being a chef in a restaurant, and you're watching your recipes getting sold to McDonalds so "average people" can taste your creations... maybe you're happy that more people are tasting it, but your livelihood is getting sold down the river, and you KNOW that the profit for this whole scheme isn't going to make it's way into your pocket.

   PUTS did the ONLY thing to make the money flow legit... they opened their own restaurant... they never worked for an expensive place (Warner Bros Restaurant??), they stopped working with the "dining experience" (Om Bistro??), and they are not letting their food go to the masses (Spotify Café??)...

   They opened their own d*mn restaurant (PL70 Diner), and made it a direct connection with the people.

   Eat up, mang... taste the difference.

   Some great posts in here! I too am not surprised by the blatant whoring-out of music artists by their labels. I guess once a label "owns" an artists rights, they see any opportunity(no matter how little it may be... 1 cent really?) as a good one. Just like they don't necessarily care if the "sound quaility" is up to par. I for one would rather be in the SHIP that I am in right now, and yes I say ship not boat because this P ship is capable of doing tremendous things and has already... no boat could handle that!

   Personally I have been on last.fm since 2005. Initially, I used this service to find new artists based off of recommendations from the music that I was already listening to. Another cool feature is that after creating a profile you can then track your own personal listening history and charts, I like this a lot. Now I use it to find new music by scoping my friends "charts" (I get turned on to music the last.fm logarithm wouldn't associate). We could also create a P-Forum listening Group and track each others playlists... Last thing, you can stream your own past playlists or your friends too,or a groups for that matter.

   I have a really hard time buying music through online services for 1 shear fact: Typically the MP3 compression rate is of low quality (anything > 192kbps) and a CBR(Constant Bit Rate). Preferably, I try to buy V0 copies which have a Variable Bit Rate and give you that broad sound spectrum comparatively. Best case scenario is I buy the physical copy my-damn-self and RIP it with EAC, setup @ V0 specs, then put it in my phone and resume to roll with the P!

   In short I would always prefer physical media rather than a digital DL or a stream from the interweb....nothing better than reading liner notes and enjoying the artwork from the cd/record. The fact the artist gets treated as they do from places like this disappoints me no end after all the hard work that goes into the music.....I guess things must move on and change to a certain extend but we can never forget history.

    Im almost thinking of making a FANofPUTS twitter, keep people updated on their albums etc.. just for fun, unless there is one already, but idk.. any exposure would be good :)
