Gnarls Barkley - St. ElsewhereThis album is not overrated because of its actual content, but at the sheer audacity of most heads to think this is a "Danger Mouse" album....This entire album was built as an apology for the DangerDoom track "Benzi Box", hands down the worst song on that entire album.
Now I'm probably a bit biased on this argument, being from Atlanta and having a lot of respect for pretty much every member of the old school Dungeon Family projects (P.A., Outkast, Goodie Mob, Sleepy's Theme, etc.), but to listen to this album and give production credit to Dangermouse is a horrid move by whoever assumed so. Go listen to the second Gnarls album; that is a Dangermouse Album....First one? Cee-lo all the way. Compare it to Cee-lo's solo projects and you'll get what I mean...Decent album from Cee-lo, but any real credit Dangermouse gets has a lot to do with a huge apology that was due from that man to Cee-lo Green himself....

Sure he made 37 million dollars last year (seriously, check it out http://www.therichest.org/entertainment/forbes-richest-rappers-2011/ ) and lots of his songs now are super whack, but this is the same dude that did Reasonable Doubt and The Blueprint.
How can someone listen to Dead Presidents II and say that that guy isn't dope?
Then again I thought Kayne's first album was great too... Hell, I think the guy makes good music, minus his autotuned sh!t. His ego is annoying as hell though.

I'll try Blueprint again (because you and several others seem so adamant about its importance), but I'm not promising anything....

There’s a difference. Busta Rhymes used to make a distinction between what he called “business rap” and “hip-hop culture music,” in which the likes of MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice, Marky Mark, and Puff Daddy would fall under “business rap.” These were usually the products of the labels, detached from the hip-hop culture. The business rappers of today are people like Jay-Z, Kanye, Drake, and others. This distinction is obscured nowadays to people like you who let the media dictate and label what hip-hop music is. Something else that is often forgotten is that music is just one thing that comes from hip-hop culture. Unfortunately, Busta Rhymes ended up leaving hip-hop culture for business rap; that’s a sellout. Someone like a Vanilla Ice wouldn’t be considered a sellout because he wasn’t a part of the culture to begin with. So, you’re idea of “all mainstream rappers being sellouts” is a misunderstanding.
I remember 20 years ago when the hip-hop culture would diss on people like Vanilla Ice, people like you would always rise up and make the same “F that all mainstream rappers are sellouts noise, good hip-hop is good hip-hop” argument. I’m absolutely serious when I say that I used to constantly hear people say that Vanilla Ice was good hip-hop. But where are his fans now? Probably listening to whatever rap pop star is out there now. As for his music, it’s in the bargain-bin going for a nickel an album.
I don’t care if people like whatever music they want to like. Go ahead and like whoever you like. My problem is with the music industry exploiting hip-hop culture by labeling the music they create "hip-hop." Reminds me of how Taco Bell used to advertise their food as “Mexican;” it’s not, stop it.

On another subject, the term “underground;” I don’t like using it. That term came around when the music industry started labeling their business rappers “hip-hop.” So in the rest of the world’s eyes, rap created by the music industry was hip-hop and the music coming from the hip-hop culture became “underground.” This is wrong. In one of the earlier posts someone asks whether underground hip-hop still hates Jay –Z to which I answer with a face-palm.
So go ahead and love Jay-Z, give him a 5 if you want, give him a 10 if you want. But don’t tell us, who are a part of hip-hop culture, that we don’t know hip-hop because we don’t subscribe to your Billboard standards.

My office/mancave/study/etc. has all my movies (1,200+) in it, and I'm really good at tossing a movie in, finding a scene, pausing, "print screen"ing the image, reducing it in photoshop, and posting it. Takes me about 3 minutes a pic, so when I saw freshkest's post, I thought of hiding under a table, and BOOM... I thought of that second pic I posted with the guys under the table in the bar brawl scene in "Back To School".eightbitbreaks said:

Posts: 1,528Posted 14 years ago #It would be interesting to sit down and actually look at what people have rated each artist side by side to draw a correlation among ourselves and what the "PUTS fan" average rating for an artist is. For instance, you know people at okayplayer.com would rate neo-soul and avant garde artists highly similar while lowly rating maybe PUTS (not saying they do, just an example). Could we pinpoint what the general consensus of our message board rating would be for any new album coming out? Brand it the PUTS fan coefficient.
It interesting seeing some of these ratings though because it makes you wonder what we truly rate some of the P's albums if we were to equate the P's career to a similar artist.

It could be two things.
1. People don't know there hip-hop history. (Very sad)
2. The underground just like mainstream rap fans are filled with a lot of sheep. Being mainstream doesn't automatically qualify you as being wack.But yeah anyone who hasn't heard Jay-Z's first album Reasonable Doubt and recognize it is a classic really doesn't know hip-hop.
