i've always liked the music which people under the stairs delivered. they are/were always a solid hip hop groupe that i could count of.it's hard to say but right now i'm really not feeling the new album. 
for me the beats aren't that good anymore how they used to be. i actually find most of the beats boring. i miss the timless melodic beats. i am actually a little bit dissapointed about it. i wish they would create those flawless, melodic beats again which in the beginning of listening to people under the stairs catched my ears. i wished they would go a little bit with the time and don't always stick to theire old school style.i mean of course they go with the time but for me right now they're moving to a strange direction. i'm sure somwhere in thes ones studio are a lot of crazy fat beats that would melt my ears, but they haven't found the way on a cd or so. i would love to hear those. maybe on the next album. i'm still interested what puts are doing in the future but for now unfortunatly they aren't in my music playlist. i know when you read this you must hate me. but i'm just writing what i feel. sorry about it. now you can kick my as

Posts: 178Posted 14 years ago #Samoht, you're going to get hated on for this thread and I can't say I agree with you 100% either. PUTS to me still hasn't made one, not one bad album, the new album is dope.
With that said I could actually live without songs like Cookie's Theme and to me the P always makes better fun songs than overly emotional tracks so I think This Lifetime was a rare misstep. Still from top to bottom there are still very few skippable tracks.
I do have to say that I think the P seems to have been in their prime between Questions and Fun DMC and I will agree with you that those beats just to me carried a little more in terms of being timeless.
I love that Left Foot Right Foot track on this album, but I also don't think this album had that one track that takes the house down like we've seen with Trippin at the Disco, Hang Loose, San Francisco Knights, Yeehaw Partystyles (Which I don't know why is never played at the shows) and more.
My .02 cents, three of the best four PUTS albums came in their first three releases, but that's just my opinion and you know what they say about those.
Also samoht, I do think it's odd though that you see PUTS moving in a new direction. Every album to my ears sounds different, that's just the way these guy operate. Nothing new at all.

But yeah, everyone looks for different things, so everyone finds something different.
I'm half expecting PUTS to get a lot of detractors from this new album because, if Stepfather was a 10 out of 10 on "experimentation", Highlighter is about a 7.5 or 8, but I know that Stepfather also drew a lot of people in, so here's hoping that Highlighter does the same. I'mma pass out the postcards I got with the CD around UC Davis and in the student assistant section of my office, and see if I can't get some people to join in.
I guess that, while I understand that the beats aren't hard hitting (OST) or drastic departures (Stepfather), I don't find them "boring".... more like... "comfortable"... Dewrit! is a perfect example. Is it a shocker? No. Is it a back-bone shaker? No. Do I need it to be that way? H*ll no. I slide into that groove like a Jacuzzi, and it's definitely on point.
I completely disagree about PUTS' slow tracks being not up to snuff with the rest of the oeuvre. I mean, More Than You Know, Acid Raindrops, Days Like These, All Good Things, D, The Wiz... man, all of those tracks are classic cool-outs in my book, and This Lifetime fits right into that. Those slow tracks get just as much rotation for me. I don't know though, I also liked J5 doing "Thin Line" on "Power In Numbers", so I may just be an idiot. This may sound sorta stupid, but I feel like, if you don't dig the slow tracks, you need to chill with more ladies; they go wild for a mellow beat.
As far as the harder hitting beats and the house-shakers, I agree that there aren't as many "hooks" on this album and things to get the crowd involved and singing along, but I feel like I'm also okay with that. I've found that "single" material always follows the same pattern in my listening schedule: I bump it like crazy for a month or two, then it gets worn out, and it doesn't stay on rotation when I learn to appreciate the rest. Since this album doesn't have a "single" sounding track (I don't know though... Talkin' Back To The Streets and Too Much Birthday are memorable to me), I'm not burning out on anything, and it's all aging nicely on my playlists.
I don't know; I just feel like the true school/throwback/old school style is one item on a menu that's pages deep for hip-hop fans, and if you want to keep eating the same jazz-loop chicken nuggets with the cypher-diss fries and the crate-digger-Coke, then you do that, but I think Thes was looking to get gourmet on this latest one, and the blue-light special is a motha. Thes mentioned in a recent interview about how he was tired of hearing how great OST was, and it was time to move on. Well, we're hearing artists developing, and so far, they haven't really pulled a sound shift that's made them "jump the shark" yet.

lol.Gotta say, Highlighters my favourite PUTS album to date, i said it last week and its still true now, everytime i listen too it, im hearing more little details and enjoying different tracks, that said, i can see why fans may be a little unsure about the PUTS sound but i dont think its changed a bit, you still got blunts, pop culture, big beats, having fun, taking time to reflect, dope rhymes, amazing production, quality samples, drinking beer.
The question you gotta ask youself is this, imagine creating music now and in ten years time, with all the advancments in technology, the changes in the music people listen too and your own personal music tastes changing, making the same old sounding stuff you were making 10 years ago? It would feel stale, forced and a parody of yourself. So the P have changed, i think they have stuck true to themselves and to the fans by not "selling out", hell, i have no doubt that PUTS could create a top 10 cheesy hip hop album that all the 14 year old girls would love and make millions of $$$ and have millions more fans, but the P aint about that!
Hope i dont sound like im ranting, im just passionate thats all, people are entitled to their own opinions!

Pretty much sums it up lol. I think a lot of people are afraid to simply be fans and go along for the ride.

Posts: 178Posted 14 years ago #Well I don't know about samoht but I am a fan, always have been. Have all eight albums and have probably been to at least 8 shows. I really don't have much to complain about at all here, like I told you PUTS has not made one bad album yet in my book. Show we what hip-hop group you can say that about? Even Wu-Tang has made clunkers of an album, it just isn't true with PUTS.
I do have to say that maybe like samoht I like older PUTS (I'm talking Fun-DMC and earlier) a tiny tiny bit more than the newer albums, but that is just personal preference. As much as I also enjoyed the rawness, hunger and fresh vibe that an album like The Next Step produced, you can tell that the P has grown musically.
