I just purused Ameoba for like two hours, and now, I'm two blocks away in Osakaya in Japan town, killing a dragon roll & oyakodon... Don't know what I'm gonna do for two and a half hours, but whatever, haha.

The P killed it though. they did that mario 2 intro that someone posted in another thread, with the amen break over the mario 2 theme. so f***ing cool

Dug through the crates at Ameoba for 2 hours... they were cleaned out of ALL their PUTS (except two copies of Highlighter & four copies of the El Rey DVD), no UD, and not much of all the other stuff I was hoping for, BUT I found "Earthtones" (Crown City Rockers), and they had a lot of good soul and jazz records to make up for the hip hop deficiencies.
Parked and ate in Japantown... dragon roll, b*tches!! F*ck with my unagi, and I'll cut your head off.
Sat drinking green tea for a while, then walked one block over to the Fillmore. It was now 6:30... Dude, it looked like a f*ckin' high school pep rally on the sidewalk. I hadn't seen that many 12-15 year old kids since I WAS one. This one young girl on crutches was desperately waiting with a friend for Mac to show up to get a poster signed. I also don't think I've seen that much teenage skin
Double K came out the back the stairwell and saw my "P" hoodie and we said what's up, and I introduced myself as "the guy doing the lyrics site"... he was like "Sactown? WHUDDUP!"... we talked for a while while he smoked, and then he tried to get me in the back entrance, but the Fillmore guys denied me and said I needed a VIP pass (they are mad dogs about security there...) Double said he'd talk with Brendan, who had just shown up (really cool dude.)
Anyway, I talked with Brendan a few times while he was running around, setting everything up, and finally, the HUGE line outside the venue started to move indoors. Brendan came out and whisked me past all the kids into the FIllmore. We chatted a bit about the venue, which kicks *ss, and then Thes and Double came out on the floor.
I was introduced to Thes, and he actually remembered me from the Sac show, which was cool. When I told him that I was essentially done transcribing everything except the last two tracks from Bloquera and promos like Funner Than Leather, his eyes bugged out and he actually did that Wayne's World "We're not worthy!" salaam gesture at me and Double just said "Man."
They left, though, so in the meantime, Brendan managed to score me a VIP sticker and we went backstage to the green room. I didn't drop any tabs in any drinks, and I didn't get up in the deli tray, but I did grab a bottle of water and sat on the couch, chillin'. Met Casey Veggies and a few other people, and Brendan and I talked about the ins-and-outs of booking shows. He told me about the complexities of rap promoting, booking, touring, etc. and now I guess I can see why it's hard to do UK tours or Midwest tours sometimes. I can speak more on this later, if you want (and hopefully, spelunk'll back me up if I get anything wrong).
Anyway, P.U.T.S. came back in the room, and we chatted for a while, and I tentatively mentioned that I had thought about doing a fan interview with them about some stuff, and Thes said [paraphrasing] "Dude, the work you did on that website means you know more about our 13 years than most, so we'd love to get interviewed by you." So, I just pulled out some questions I just HAPPENED to have in my pocket (how'd THOSE get there?!?), and turned on my iPhone Voice Memo and started asking. I'll transcribe the 'view soon (today, probably)... I already sound checked 'em last night, and I can hear most everything.
While I was interviewing them, eightbitbreaks from the forums came in with a homie, and after the interview was over, we excused ourselves from the green room, and stood just offstage/sidestage, and watched Casey finish out his set, and then P.U.T.S. came out.
P.U.T.S. rocked the set, and did a d*mn good job... nothing from Highlighter. But I'm not gonna lie: the audience response was terrible. Never once did the homies slacken off on the energy, and there were some loud cheers, but the teeny crowd in the front row just had their "opening act" faces on. eightbit and I were so p*ssed, we were gonna go out and beat 'em up (I had to hold him back, you know how it is... haha, okay, just kidding), but it was okay.
An important side note: I spoke with P.U.T.S. and Brendan about the audience, and it goes like this: it's about getting exposure to the new generation of hip hop fans, and there may be resistance, but some cats will like it and go out and explore the roots like they are supposed to. They didn't play anything from Highlighter because, according to Thes, it isn't as instantly accessible as their old hits. These are kids out there, this is their first concert ever, so while they will do whatever the people on stage tell them to do, they've never done the opening act experience before. If it'd been a PUTS-headlining show, the audience reaction would be a lot better, but most of the people out there would already be exposed to them, so while P.U.T.S. did seem a little disheartened after the show that the audience wasn't going wild, they still view it as a huge win to be on the tour, and they don't seem very worried about it.

Before I get to the aftershow stuff, I remember that: it was Thes, actually... he said "I just saw my first mom-daughter argument for the tour... the mom saw the bar and said 'finally, some place I can get a drink!' and when the daughter and her friends said something about wanting to go to the stage (or something like that), the mom was like 'just be glad I decided to bring you!' "... so funny... oh yeah, and the rest of the shows for this small tour are all going to be all-ages, so I thought I heard that that means no more comp-ed booze for the tour for the homies. When the heavy drums kick in, it just instantly ups the whole experience... POW!

Dope that you actually did an interview and even recorded it..cant wait to hear that one! Respect. Cool to hear the P did not take it too personally when those kids didn't know how to rock a party with the P!

Brendan took our three VIP passes so he could bring his bro and sis backstage (you guys DO look hella similar, yo, haha), and eightbit and I chatted about our school/work and things. When I mentioned that I was looking into being a CSI, Double almost dropped his blunt, haha.
I don't remember how it all got started, but we eventually talked with P.U.T.S. about a bunch of stuff for like 30 minutes: the early demos and Smile Oak, some really serious sh*t (death and hardships and things), and then I took an opportunity to lighten things up and ask them about their favorite house parties. Double K's was an early one that involved Smile Oak hanging out the car's sunroof, and Thes's (which Double wasn't at) was hil-LAR-ious. He almost got in a fight with a dude, and then all his fans from the show backed him up. There's more to it than that, but I think I have that on Voice Memo too, we'll see what I can post up.
Oh, and regarding the early demos, Thes still has them all archived, but he's not sure that they'll get released. He likes the rawness of them, but I think the homies are a little embarrassed by the rhyme schemes, haha. I'll have more about that in the transcriptions, I think.
Double asked me if I could go and grab him and Thes another drink, and after I told him that I didn't have my VIP pass anymore, he gave me his All Access Pass for a minute. I went back up to the bar, got Thes the LAST GUINNESS IN THE PLACE (all they had after that was Bud and Corona... whew!), and that and a double vodka-cran for the KK left me short $25... woo, expensive... but I finally bought the homies that drink that I felt I owed them for all that early illegal downloading when I was too ignorant to know any better.
When I got back and gave Double his All Access, Brendan said that Fillmore security was giving them static about the number of people they were bringing back (I told you, man... they are tough there...), so he asked if eightbit and his homie and I wouldn't mind calling it a night backstage, so we all went out onto the floor. Mac was still playing, but I got what I came for, so I left. On my way out, I noticed the merch table was selling some DOPE shirts: there's a tan one with WRLA on it, a white one with navy sleeves that says "EDDUM CHIBBUM LIVES" (Thes was wearing that one for the show.... Double had on a Diabolical Biz Markie shirt
), and there was a tan Highlighter one with the Thes/Double caricatures. I really wanted to buy the last two, but I'd used my money getting the drinks, and I needed toll booth fare to get home, so I didn't get one. (F*@&!)On another side note, I didn't bring anything to sign, but I think I got enough out of the trip anyway.
So yeah:
The whole experience - 5 stars
The PUTS set - 4 stars (I'm being selfish and docking one star 'cause I wanted to hear Highlighter!)
The crowd reaction - 2 stars (c'mon, teens!) -
