whats everyone's thoughts on using drum loops as opposed to programmed kicks/snares etc. I had a look on MPC-forums but some of those forum jockeys
are messed up.

You are probably not gonna wanna rock a skull snaps drum loop or JB funky drummer because of the widespread usuage but say if there is a rare drum break go ahead and flip that sh!t. For me, I always program my own, but I'm still open to using loops. A lot of the time I'll drop the low and most of the mid out of a drum break and add my own drums to fill it in, a lot of cats do this. -

When I use a drum loop I find my shi# sounds so much more organic, I want to achieve that using hits, i think I need to experiment more with sampling "silence"
I recently read this: (sorry bout the text shoulda linked it) Shadow interview.
" The big tip I learned on the MPC is about the fade function. I never like my chops to sound really choppy, unless they?re intentionally supposed to be choppy, if you get my drift, like in a jungly kind of way. If I?m doing a loop ? and I learned this from people like Large Professor and Pete Rock, and Premier, I?ll always credit those people ? it?s much more difficult to make it sound like it?s a loop from pieces or a non-existing loop. So let?s say you?ve sampled little pieces of a loop, and you don?t want to make it sound choppy. You don?t want to hear the decay cut off on the snare or whatever, or no ambience on the kick. So I like to give it that ambience if it?s not already there. Sometimes I?ll just sample air off the record and lay that in. And that?s where the fade comes in. If I sample air, and it?s like [sings ?tshhhhhhh?], if you fade it in, it?s like [sings ?wwhhshhhh?], and then if you repeat it over and over, it creates a softness that blends in, and essentially there isn?t ever any empty space. And only if it?s necessary. Maybe you might have to put that sound in only one step on a two-bar loop."
You have a valid point regarding funky drummer - im not about to do that.
At the moment my snares sound like someone sitting on a matchbox, any tips?

Yeah, it's hard to make em sound like a loop, I think one of the hardest, if not THE hardest aspect to get down is hi-hats. Tip: Vary the velocity, no drummer hit's his hats the same EVERY single time that will def make them sound better, especially on 16th note hats. Also try layering snares, have your 1 main snare, then add 1 or 2 under it at lower velocity to give em some crunch, like one crisp snare and maybe 1 or 2 dry maples with the a sharp decay to give it nice snap. Then again, I'm always looking for more "swoll" kicks, so I layer these as well sometimes. hehe it's a science, always in the lab cooking up something.

but i have different ways of layering that sh!t down. a drummer (being me) is not going to hit the hi-hat at EXACTLY the mesure, most of the time the hi-hat goes with the kick, so try to compliment it with that. But as far as patterns sounding like loops, it can be difficult to many (like me) but thes has proven that it can be done. Most of thes's drums sound like loops even though they are patterns. He has very well mastered that technic. -

thats a deep question, and only you will find out in time. Im assuming you havnt been listenin to hip hop as long as you should..
hip hop is not any style, if you are truley hip hop you can make anything hip hop, if i make a record from punk riffs and sh!t like dat, its hip hop because i am hip hop. -

Posts: 192Posted 20 years ago #thes uses alot of drum loops, f*** that sh!t about "choppin it so it sounds looped" of course that is the goal with single hits and whatnot but like the producers back in the day he digs for drum loops. ie "the dig" he didn't do alot to that drum break (not sayin thats a bad thing) -

yea everyone does, when people say i only use loops, i know hes talking about chooping em up or just looping em, you can go both ways. But everyone chops kicks and snares up.
