I gonna kinda blow my cover here but, I finally got me a turntable. I haven't listened to actual wax in forever. I let it slip away from me for a long time. Reading this forum and in particular this thread, reset the hook. I really don't have much cash at this time and gettin a whole new format wasn't really logical. I happened to pass buy a garage sale and halfassed asked if he had any turntables for sale.
"Actually, I do. I got it hooked up in the house if you wanna check it out. I just got one of those all-in-one CD/record player/radio things (I immediately thought of The Price is Right) and my wife would love it if I got rid of this old one."
"Ya alright. I'll check it out."
He opened up this old hutch and there sat a near mint Technics SL-B3 with a Stanton 680EE on it. He flicked on this funky NEC amp (I know nothing about it), hit start and away it went. Everything worked perfect and it ran rock steady. Duke Elington never sounded so good to me.
"How much you want?"
"How 'bout $10?"
"Throw in the amp?"
"Ya, sure."
"Sold."
Hit a couple other garage sales after that and picked up few sh!t albums for $.25 each. Some Staple Singers, some Jan & Dean, Johnny Cash, Earnest Tubb, Red Simpson. They're all hammered but, I was fired up.
A few days later, I ran into a life long buddy's mom and I remembered seeing a box of old albums in her garage over the winter that had a Baha Marimba Band - Do You Know the Way to San Jose in it.
"Can I have that box of records in the garage, Mom?"
"Yep. I told those two (brothers) to take whatever they wanted out of that garage a year ago. They're yours now. Come get 'em."
A few days after that, I'm telling another buddy that story and he recons he's got all my old albums from high school sitting in his mom's garage. "Ya, remember? You let me borrow 'em when I moved to Tahoe." In return for keaping them so long, he gave me his old sh!t too. A few Police, some Oingo Boingo. I haven't counted but, there has to be well over 50 albums in my "new" collection. A bunch of old New Wave sh!t, although my "the The"s are all gone. Grrr. A bunch of old Disney 45s. A couple Steely Dans and ELOs and what not. It's nothing amazing but, its a start. I've been dropping the hint on that new Highlighter setup for my birthday. Maybe it'll turn up.
