   Haven't heard much talk about jazz in the forums. Jazz is the original American music and I think it deserves some cred among the PUTS.

   Wes Montgomery and George Benson are well-loved by the PUTS and are great records, man. Such effortless guitar playing, with a very organic electric sound. When you can catch Wes on wax during a break, without a drummer, it speaks universes.

   I know Thes is a big fan of Bob James, but I guess I was leaning more toward a traditional kind of jazz. From Stan Getz to Sun Ra, there is so much stuff out there. Sonny Stitt is worth checking out. So many four-second loops of wonder.

   Sunday is always jazz day for me, put on some nice vinyl to chill to. But where to start!

   some easy favourites:
   Ahmad Jamal (he has about 50+ albums though so who knows where to begin! I only got a couple)
   Stanley Clarke is a beast on the bass (guitar and double-bass)
   I have a few Oscar Peterson Trio records, always really nice, especially one with Milt Jackson on vibes

   some ones I've been listening to more recently:

   Billy Cobham - Life and Times (from 1976 - Siesta on this album is great)
   

   Bud Powell, another great pianist, with Max Roach on drums, 1947/48
   

   and from 'America The Beautiful (an account of its disappearance by Gary McFarland)' - the cover has a bald eagle crying, the back has an elegy to lost nature and "the testament of wasters" - such an awesome album, from 1968:
   

   there's a lot of good Polish records, more recent jazz from Japan and of course UK always has a good scene, people like Soweto Kinch / Courtney Pine / Jazz Jamaica / Natural Yogurt Band still doing great stuff

   Aye - Courtney Pine's 'Modern Day Jazz Stories' is a nice piece of work from years gone by.
   I've mentoned before his/DJ Pogo's classic 'Yoga Fire...Yoga Flame' Dhalsim sample on 'In the Garden of Eden'.

   Got a few John Coltrane, Miles Davies and also a few Wynton Marsalis cd's from the early 90's...although I know Marsalis has been heavely criticized by many over the years for his attitude (didn't know enough about it to comment, but I've seen him live and enjoyed it).

   Also got 'Buckshot Le Fonque' (starring DJ Premier) & 'Music Evolution' by Branford Marsalis.

   Say what you want, that Marsalis family are a talented bunch.

   i know it is supposedly 'done to death' but i am a HUGE fan of Miles' late sixties/early seventies-rip-your-head-off-face-melting fusion.
   Bitches Brew will always be one of my 'desert-island' albums.

   and 'A Tribute to Jack Johnson'... man, don't even get me started.

   Jazz is always one of those things i feel i really should be into....i've a few Jazz albums in my collection and as much as i emjoy it when i hear it, it's really not something i tend to put on myself and i am really not sure why. Most of my fave Hip Hop groups sampling loads of Jazz records and as such i really need to get on it.....just can't seem to break the barrier down as much as i think i should...maybe i need more education on the subject and maybe this thread will provide it....no pressure then!!!!

   This is one of my favourites - been sampled to death but nobody has really captured it...

    I'll tell you right now though, one man that is beloved by hip-hop lovers is Joe Pass. Nearly always playing by himself, people are more apt to sample him than anyone else.

    One of my favorites is his solo version of Satin Doll.
    We sampled part of the intro and must have used the splices in like five different beats!

    What's the protocol of dragging up old threads in here?

    I'd have thought that many a hip hop head from a certain era has more than a passing interest in jazz. Its laid a very strong foundation in hip hop, in many ways. From rhythm to attitude and beyond.

    The awesome thing about jazz is its breadth of styles. I love Miles' bitches brew era, and Herbies Headhunters. I also love kind of blue and Maiden Voyage by Herbie. Its almost a different music, hip hop has that same ability.

    The artists i always go back to are, Art Pepper, Medeski, Martin and Wood (them cats are WILD), Oscar Peterson, our own Courtney Pine, Milt Jackson and Miles Davis.

    Matter of fact there's so much great jazz. I'm gonna pop a cassette on right now!

    Mose Alison is my favorite Jazz artist. His sound is hard to describe, but is very distinctive. Heavily blues influenced piano, with flatly sung lyrics that could have been written by Kurt Vonnegut (my favorite author).

    Some of my favorite songs are "I Don't Worry About A Thing," "Your Mind Is On Vacation," "I Love The Life I Live," and there's a great live duet he does with Van Morrison called "I Don't Want Much."
