Posts: 94Posted 14 years ago #What an awful way to start a Friday... If it weren't for MCA and the rest of the Beasties I wouldn't be listening to rap now. I still remember when my homie gave me an extra copy of License to Ill he had in 7th grade and I was instantly hooked on hiphop.

Sounds as though he was in a lot of pain, at least he is not suffering any longer. You will be greatly missed by all. f*** this Friday f'real

Posts: 49Posted 14 years ago #Because I was born in the early 90's I really can't tell you guys anything about being down with the Beasties for a long time. But ever since I learned about them back in 2004 (age 12) their original style has defined my taste in hip hop.

i've been a huge BBoys fan since the day Licence to Ill dropped when i was in grade 7... (yeah, i'm that old)

never looked back... i still have all my tapes from back then somewhere.so sad that it is over.

The literally hundreds of times Paul's Boutique got played by me...shoosh, could actually be in the thousands, in the car, parties, camping. Wherever, whenever. F'n masterstroke of an album.
I will be rockin the entire catalogue all weekend.

It was good music to me... just like a Jimi Hendrix record or something. They were the epitome of a crossover band, ESPECIALLY after "Sabotage" hit the airwaves. I took Ill Communication so... f*ckin'... seriously. That was the RECORD for me.
I never warmed up to country (with the exception of Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash and older, "folk"y stuff...), but when the funk started to take over my stereo in college, I reassessed my feelings toward beats, rapping, and hip hop in general: "I collect records... I love James Brown... I love Parliament... I think I've always preferred complex beats and bass... why the F*CK am I not more into this stuff??" and what was the starting point for my musical journey when that time came? The Beastie Boys. Without them, I would've had no frame of reference.
So yeah... sorry for the essay, but my heart dropped when I read that MCA was gone, and when I think about it... me and a lot of other rock-lovin' West Coast white guys from surburbia would've never warmed up to beats or ever known about anything other than West Coast gangsta rap (which, like I said, I wasn't taking seriously) if it hadn't been for the Beasties. They may not even be in my top 5 hip hop groups right now, but I owe them a debt. And THAT'S why it's gonna be a Beastie Boys weekend for me.
