Yup, its sad. I personally really dug (gulp.....here goes....LOL) the BEP album "Bridging the Gaps" back in the day. I was really into a band called 311 at the time ;(who I have pretty much lost all hope in; they have been putting out the same record for about 3-4 albums at least; really dug their dubby influenced album "Transistor"; its my fave; they were at least positive rap rock unlike most groups of that terrible terrible genre; also, they're a great live band) they were kind of hanging out with BEP back in the early 2000's before BEP went super pop, they even did a few tracks with them that never made it onto anything as far as I know....yeah "Bridging the Gap" is the only album of their's I ever got I think, and it has some cool stuff on it I think. BUT, I almost can't listen to it now because of how far they've gone into the super pop realm, of which I have no interest really.......
EDIT: he could peep his own words on the track "Bringing it back" nowadays: "I know I'm not the only one who's feeling the void, creatively hip hop is being destroyed, a lotta rappers really need to be unemployed....". Like ummmmm you LOL

Could not have said it better myself......i think its easier to go down the whole Pop super group road rather than actually trying to stay fresh with new ideas. Lets face it the pop/chart listeners just want the same song rehashed over and over again and with the BEP and Will.I.Am thats what they are getting.....lets face it you get what you deserve and if you want to just consume music that is fed to you in that way then so be it!!! But yeah sad.....very sad

Given the choice between underground credibility or $$$$$$$$$$$$'s - very few would opt for the former. He's made a living out of doing what he enjoys and gets paid a LOT of money. Fair play to the guy.

The thing is and as much as i agree a lot of people would go for the cash, is he actually enjoying what he is doing?? I can't answer that but i would argue that when you're getting paid all of that cash by a record compnay are you allowed to really do the music you want to even if you are the BEP. I don't think you are, i think the record company expect the music to sound the same. The new single to be the same as the last, the new album to have guests on it that are on the same label. So to a degree is he enjoying it......who knows....of as with most things the more money you get the more you take your eye off the prize due to other distractions.

I didn't really have a problem with the first two BEP albums either, and the spirit with which they were made. I also don't begrudge him his money. That's all well and good. I even have Elephunk on my iPod, and I'll put on "Let's Get Retarded" or whatever for my wife if she wants to hear it.
But there is a reason why we call people "sell-outs".
Maybe I could forgive will's attitude at the Thes One battle at Root Down and dismiss it as stage personality. Maybe I could forgive Elephunk because they were "trying something new". But I don't even think it's about underground/street cred or making a living. The battle here is whether he gave up his artistic and personal integrity, and personally, I think he DID.
If you just start pumping out albums of club bangers or radio rap, then I'm sorry, but you're just not trying to make music and/or lyrics that have a PERSONAL purpose... that speak to a vision that you want to get out. At least, nothing beyond getting a bunch of 12-year olds amped to do things they're not ready for, like dressing like sluts and fighting to get "crunk" in a club or some sh*t.
Look, PUTS has already said that their focus is on the beats and they don't need to "save the dolphins" or anything, but they still craft those beats with a lot of care and the meaning's in the music for them. The funk. Even a song like "Beer", which is about as free-wheelin' and "frat boy" as it gets still has a definite purpose and a definite sound, and it isn't just a mindless LMFAO bump track. Even "The Fun", which admits that "the bottom line is the dollar sign" is still crafted and meets the definition of an art, and it's not that Minaj chick wailing out some bullsh*t over and over again about love, lust, etc.
Forgive me for drawing an analogy here to another artist I couldn't give a flying (spaghetti monster) about, but I have to mention this. I remember that, after Nelly Furtado's "I'm Like A Bird" song came out (it was sorta catchy, admit it), I saw an interview with her where she said something along the lines of "I'm going to use all the money I got from that single to make songs that I REALLY care about... and that REALLY matter". Even though I wasn't crazy about her music, I thought "at least she's showing vision". And then she puts out "Promiscuous"... really??? A song like that is what she WANTED to do? At that point, any leeway I could've given anyone like her or will.i.am or anyone else went STRAIGHT out the window. That's selling out.
If they make money... good for them. And I guess I could give partial credit to people like Lady Gaga who at least attempt a message in a song ("Born This Way")... But they are all doing it at the expense of musical integrity. They are sacrificing any vision or struggle to put a message into a medium (a.k.a. ART) for the almighty dollar sign and a sequencer.
