Posts: 49Posted 14 years ago #I find Mac Miller irritating too, but to be fair, there is two sides to the story. He used the beat on a mixtape. Yes, he made a breakthrough with it, but still. There are tons of rappers doing the same thing. Whether or not they mention the original artist/beatmaker, that's a different thing. Mac should've asked for Finesse's permission, that's for sure.
There are some good points in the comments section of the article (amongst all the brainless all caps outbursts). This case could start a wave of money hungry artists and producers (not saying Finesse is one) demanding their share of money made by the use of unauthorised beats.

Like a lot of the cats posting on that article stated, there is no way in hell LF cleared all the sh!t he used to make all his beats. All I have to say to Lord Finesse is... Glass House my friend, Glass House! Just leave it alone LF, Lord knows that you don't need anyone snooping around your beat garden. PUTS didn't sue Mac for royalties on SF knights, instead they embraced it and banked on the back end... that's it that's all!
Sounds like we are all on the same page... MacMiller should have verbally given credit where it was due, but didn't which isn't a surprise. Seems the "code" of hip hop is all f***ed up and nobody "New/Pop/Commercial" knows where it should be...
At least there are dudes like PUTS keeping cats in check, that's if they even listen to lyrics anymore!

- Lord FinesseThere is a huge difference between jacking an entire beat and sampling bits and pieces, artistically speaking I agree. But I would think that in the eyes of the law the two instances are very similar in structure... Ask Kanye if he's performing Gone any more, or Common if Chi-City is on his live set list... And if they are, they had to pay Mr. Farrell's daughter for it.
I actually applaud Finesse for taking a stand against the blatant misrepresentation of music going on these days but I just worry where it might lead... Let a sleeping dog lie

I dig that Kool Aid and Frozen Pizza song. But if Lupe Fiasco can get away with desecrating TROY, then there shouldn't be a problem with what Mac Miller did. You simply can't stop them from rhyming over the classics if they think they are paying "homage"

I'm always in a constant state of *throw my hands in the air* "Sh*t, I don't know!" when it comes to sampling. It seems like everyone's got different standards in the community, but the bottom line is:
When someone samples current and/or living artists (especially fellow hip-hop artists), part of the respect they pay to the sampled artist should be clearance. The kids need to learn that, even if it was a homage track. Proper channels, y'all.

The two could've met and talked it out over a burger or something; gotten a little royalties contract made up. I get Finesse on this one, but I just think it puts a little hurt in the game when there's litigation. I'd hate to see the cream of hip-hop getting alienated for attacking the biters because people don't see that "entire beat" vs. "bits and pieces" idea.

To my fans, don't be disrespectful. Finesse is a legend. If you have a problem with his actions be intelligent about it and be respectful.
But then again, I'm sure that his fans aren't gonna heed his advice. -
